Celebrating 50 years of Dance The lights go down.The orchestra begins to play. Dancers appear and there’s magic on the stage. The Omaha Academy of Ballet, a dream by its founders for a school and a civic ballet company for Omaha, was realized by the gift of two remarkable people: Valerie Roche ARAD director of the school and the late Lee Lubbers S.J., of Creighton University. Lubbers served as Board President and production manager, while Roche choreographed, rehearsed and directed the students during their performances. The dream to have a ballet company for the city of Omaha had begun. Lubbers also hired Roche later that year to teach dance at the university. This decision helped establish the creation of a Fine and Performing Arts Department at Creighton. The Academy has thrived for 50 years, thanks to hundreds of volunteers, donors, instructors, parents and above all the students. Over the decades, the Academy has trained many dancers who have gone on to become members of professional dance companies such as: the American Ballet Theatre, Los Angeles Ballet, Houston Ballet, National Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, San Francisco Ballet, Minnesota Dance Theatre, Denver Ballet, Momix and the Omaha Ballet. Our dancers have also reached beyond the United States to join: The Royal Winnipeg in Canada and the Frankfurt Ballet in Germany. With virtuoso solos and an achingly beautiful score, it is emblematic of the opulent grandeur of the greatest of all 19th-Century story ballets. This study guide is designed to help teachers prepare students for their trip to the theatre where they will see Swan Lake Act III. In this Study Guide we will: • Provide the entire synopsis for Christopher Stowell’sSwan Lake, consider some of the stories that inspired the ballet, Principal Dancer Yuka Iino and Guest Artist Ruben Martin in Christopher and touch on its history Stowell’s Swan Lake. The company, then titled the Soviet National Ballet, was founded by and incorporated graduates from the great Russian choreographic schools of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Perm. The principal dancers SWAN LAKE Photo: Alexander Daev of the company came from the upper ranks of the great ballet companies and academies of Russia, and the companies of Riga, Kiev and even Warsaw. Today, the Russian National Ballet Theatre SWAN LAKE is its own institution, with over 50 dancers of singular instruction and vast experience, many of whom have been with the company Full-length Ballet in Four Acts since its inception. Bolender’s records constitute the first processed collection of the Kansas City Ballet Archives. The collection spans Bolender’s lifetime with the bulk of records dating after 1960. It has been called the “quintessential ballet” (quintessential means the purest and most perfect or the embodiment of, in this case, ballet!) and is often the show that pops into people’s minds when the word ballet is mentioned. Since its premiere in Moscow, Russia, it has been presented in over 150 versions by more than 100 companies in at least 25 different countries. That’s a lot of swans! Swan Lake didn’t start out successfully – which is surprising, considering its fame today. It premiered on February 20, 1877, and although Tchaikovsky’s spectacular music was used from the beginning, the choreography, originally done by Julius Reisinger, was less than stellar. A critic who was at the performance wrote, "Mr. Reisinger’s dances are weak in the extreme.... Incoherent waving of the legs that continued through the course of four hours - is this not torture? The corps de ballet stamp up and down in the same place, waving their arms like a windmill’s vanes - and the soloists jump about the stage in gymnastic steps." Ouch! Unfortunately Reisinger failed to mesh his choreography with the psychological, beautiful music Tchaikovsky created. -

However, he approach adopted is equally appropriate to older students and the list of ‘Things to do and discuss’ contains tasks to challenge all, including 'A' level students. The teacher is invited to select and/or adapt according to the needs of the situation. Pupils attending a live performance of the ballet should be familiar with the story and, ideally, should be introduced to a number of 'anchor points' - features to notice and moments to listen for. For convenience, tasks and activities are often grouped around a specific art form, but it is important to stress that ballet involves several art forms. Listening without the visual dimension, or focusing on design elements independently of the music and the dance, are valuable approaches in raising pupils' awareness but they should be regarded as means to an end. In ballet the whole is much more than the sum of the parts. To make most effective use of this pack it may well be necessary to copy and disseminate the material among specialist or other teacher colleagues.
