VICTORIA B.C. — New season celebrates cultural diversity and brings community together at University Centre Farquhar Auditorium

“We’re pleased to announce our 2016-17 season featuring a diverse line-up of engaging and exciting artists,” says Ian Case, Director of the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium. “This year, we’re introducing three stellar shows for families, the Farquhar Family Series featuring dance, music and theatre for young audiences.”

In addition to exciting family entertainment, the Farquhar presenting series offers a wide variety of musical styles from jazz to finger-style guitar to rock and roll inspired folk to indo-pop/traditional fusion.

The Farquhar Auditorium’s 2016-17 season includes:

Shanghai Acrobats – September 3 & 4, 2016, 2pm – Building on two successful, sold-out presentations of the National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China, the Farquhar’s season kicks off with two afternoon performances of Shanghai Nights. The Shanghai Acrobats of the People Republic of China delight audiences with the story of adventurous dreams of a young boy told through acrobatic feats and lively music. Fun for the whole family!

Cicada and the Ant –October 23, 2016, 3pm The soil, a field, an empty space where anything is possible, where gradually humans settle, build, sow, work, sing and harvest. From the sowing of the seed to the harvest, Sursaut Dance Company presents this choreographic work for young and old that casts a glance at the world of art and agriculture. www.sursaut.ca

Will Stroet –December 4, 2016, 11am Seen weekly on CBC’s Wills Jams, this award-winning children’s musician inspires kids to be active, healthy, creative and engaged in the world through educational music. Join local kids' entertainer, Will Stroet and his Backyard Band for a high-energy show with fun actions and sing-along choruses. www.willmusic.ca

Axis Theatre Hamelin-January 15, 2017 11am Axis Theatre’s unique theatre style re-tells the comedic, heart-tugging musical story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, featuring a cast of five professional actor/musicians using masks and puppets. At 41 years and counting, Axis Theatre is recognized as one of BC’s important cultural institutions, travelling the world to share their unique repertoire of plays for all ages. www.axistheatre.com

Remi Bolduc Jazz Ensemble- January 21, 2017 7:30pm Montreal’s Remi Bolduc Jazz Ensemble is currently touring with A Tribute to Dave Brubeck, one of America’s most iconic jazz composer-pianists. Bolduc’s music catches the ear whether it’s a modern twirl of dissonant jazz, an improvised spiral or the catchy rhythms of one of the greats. Accompanying him is guest pianist Francois Bourassa, as well as his standard rhythm section, bassist Fraser Hollins and drummer Dave Laing. www.remibolduc.com

International Guitar Night (IGN) – January 29, 2017 7:30pm For International Guitar Night’s 17th year of touring, Brian Gore has chosen three new, incredibly dynamic musicians: Italy’s innovative contemporary guitarist Luca Stricagnoli; brilliant young Brazilian composer/performer Chrystian Dozza, and India’s groundbreaking slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya. Starman: Acoustic Bowie – February 8, 2017, 8pm When Doug Cox first conceptualized Starman:An Acoustic Evening of David Bowie Songs, the thought of it being a posthumous tribute to the influential English rock star was inconceivable. Cox has recruited a solid cast of professional musicians, including -winning singer/songwriter Helen Austin, and Shaun Verreault of Wide Mouth Mason. Other band members include Cox’s long-time collaborator Sam Hurrie, Linda McRae (Spirit of the West), percussionist Robin Layne (Locarno) and Canadian bassist extraordinaire Rick May. Join an inspired, diverse group of Canadian singers/musicians as they celebrate the songs of Bowie in this in-the-round concert performance. www.acousticstarman.com

Kiran Ahluwalia –February 26, 2017 7:30pm Kiran Ahluwalia is a modern purveyor of the great vocal traditions of India and Pakistan which she honors intensely yet departs from in assertive ways. Her original compositions embody the essence of Indian music while embracing influences from both the West and Africa -- specifically the Sahara. With her 4- piece group of electric and acoustic guitar, accordion and tabla, Ahluwalia creates boundary-breaking songs that invite us to explore the human condition. www.kiranmusic.com
