C., 2Khan, S. S. A. and 1Rahman, S. 1Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) Laboratories Chittagong, Chittagong- 4220, Bangladesh 2Asian University for Women, Chittagong-4100, Bangladesh Article history Abstract Received: 8 January 2014 Magnesium is an essential mineral for its crucial role in many physiological function and Received in revised form: metabolism. While magnesium should be present in nutritionally important quantities in regular 30 January 2014 Accepted: 31 January 2014 diets, average Bangladeshi diets frequently fail to contain an adequate supply of the element. Thus, the study aims to determine the amount of magnesium in four different dietary items, Keywords bananas, vegetables and pulses, locally available in Chittagong, Bangladesh, using Spectro- photometric method. As per the findings, the magnesium concentration for banana contrasts Magnesium Arum between 0.843 µg/g and 3.654µg/g. Musa cavendishii from Satkania Upazila contains the Banana highest value while, the lowest amount is found in Musa paradisiaca from Lama Upazila. For Vegetable and Pulse arums, the amount varies between 0.476 and 21.3456µg/g. The highest amount was found in arums, Colocasia esculenta (Patiya upazila) i.e. 21.3456µg/g and the lowest amount appears from the same species at Boailkhali upazila. In vegetables, the quantity fluctuates between 1.62 and 5.93 µg/g with the maximum amount found in Anowara upazila. Magnesium in pulses was observed in the range 6.5333-28.3208 µg/g.

  • Adoption and Profitability of Improved Tomato Variety in the Chittagong Region of Bangladesh
J.Soil.Nature. 1 (3):52-58 (November 2007) ADOPTION AND PROFITABILITY OF IMPROVED TOMATO VARIETY IN THE CHITTAGONG REGION OF BANGLADESH M. MOHIUDDIN1, M. S. UDDIN2, M. H. RASHID1, K. M. F. HOSSAIN1 AND M. A. MATIN3 1Scientific Officer, 2Chief Scientific Officer, Regrional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong, 3Senior Scientific Officer, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur, Bangladesh Accepted for publication: October 08, 2007 ABSTRACT Mohiuddin, M., Uddin, M. S., Rashid, M. H., Hossain, K. M. F. and Matin, M. A. 2007. Adoption and Profitability of Improved Tomato Variety in the Chittagong Region of Bangladesh. J .Soil .Nature .1(3): 52-58 The study was conducted in Patiya and Satkania upazila of Chittagong district during 2005-2006 to assess the adoption status, agronomic practices and profitability of improved tomato variety among the farmers. Data were analyzed through tabular methods and Cobb- Douglas production model. The adoption status of improved tomato variety was found very low. Considering all the improved varieties that are cultivated in the study area Surokka (Indian variety) are ranked first followed by Ratan (BARI variety) and Ruma VF (Indian variety). Farmers’ consciousness about improved tomato cultivation was found increasing. Gross margin was Tk 101566/ha and Tk 140015/ha on the basis of variable cost and cash cost respectively. Per hectare net return from tomato cultivation was Tk 100338 on the basis of full cost. On the basis of variable cost, returns to labour and returns to irrigation were Tk 483 and Tk 13.33 respectively. Major reasons in favour of improved tomato cultivation were higher yields, thick fruit skin, large size, long durability and high price due to attractive colour and size.

  • Study on the Prevalence of Mycoplasma Gallisepticum In
Bangl. J. Vet. Med. (2006). 4 (2): 141–142 Short communication STUDY ON MYCOPLASMA GALLISEPTICUM IN CHICKENS IN SELECTED AREAS OF BANGLADESH S. R. Barua1, A. M. Prodhan, S. Islam and S. Chowdhury Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Pahartali, Chittagong, Bangladesh ABSTRACT The present study was aimed to determine the sero-prevalence of Mycoplasma gallisepticum in chickens in two selected areas; Lohagara and Satkania Upazila of Chittagong district. The study was conducted from July to October 2004 that was based on Rapid Serum Plate Agglutination (SPA) test. The serological test was done on 400 samples which revealed prevalence of Mycoplasma gallisepticum were 53% in broiler and 73% in layer at Lohagara, where as 46% in broiler and 60% in layer at Satkania Upazilla. Key words: Mycoplasma, seroprevalence, rapid serum plate agglutination INTRODUCTION Mycoplasmosis is a chronic and slow spreading contagious disease in birds characterized by obstinate hacking cough, sneezing and tracheal rales (Chakrabarti, 1993). The bacterial concurrent infections may be due to Escherichia coli; Haemophilus paragallinarum and thus complicate the disease (Amin and Jordean, 1979). This is one of the major avian diseases in Bangladesh which is economically important and emerging problems for rising poultry industry (Prodhan, 2002). It is not a killer disease like Newcastle or Gumboro disease but, in complicated cases, birds may die (Amin and Jordan, 1979). All ages of chickens and turkey are affected but young birds are more susceptible than adults (Nunoya et al., 1995). The economic loss incurs resulting from poor feed conversion ratio (FCR) of broiler, declining of egg production in layer, reduction of hatchability in breeder flock, down-grading of broiler meat and condemnations of carcasses (Carpenter et al., 1982).

  • Researched and Compiled by the Refugee Documentation Centre of Ireland on 3 January 2014
Bangladesh – Researched and compiled by the Refugee Documentation Centre of Ireland on 3 January 2014. Any information on conflict between Jamat Sibir (Jamaat Shibir) and the Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Commission (Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist & Christian Unity Council?) during the period February – July 2013. Information specifically referring to conflict between Jamaat Shibir and the Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist & Christian Unity Council was not found among sources available to the Research and Information Unit. A number of reports refer to attacks against Hindus and Buddhists in March 2013 which were allegedly carried out by members of Jamaat Shibir. A Human Rights Watch report on protests which followed the conviction of the vice-president of the Jamaat party by the International Crimes Tribunal states: “The initial information received by Human Rights Watch suggests that the police were responding to attacks by Jamaat members and supporters that resulted in police and civilian deaths after the party called for protests against the verdict. The Jamaat party has denied that their members are responsible for any lethal violence, but media reports indicate that members of Jamaat’s Shibir group were responsible for several attacks, including against Hindu temples and houses.” (Human Rights Watch (1 March 2013) Bangladesh: End Violence Over War Crimes Trials) An Amnesty International report on these events states: “Over the past week, individuals taking part in strikes called for by Islamic parties have vandalised more than 40 Hindu temples across Bangladesh. Scores of shops and houses belonging to the Hindu community have also been burned down, leaving hundreds of people homeless. The attacks come in the context of large scale violent protests that have been raging across Bangladesh for weeks over the country’s ongoing war crimes tribunal, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
