Tectonically the area lies in the southern slope of Rangpur saddle within the stable Precambrian platform. The investigation work carried out by an exploratory drilling operation with the help of wire line drilling rig. Core samples were collected and subsequently analyzed during the drilling activity. Three limestone layers have been encountered at different depth of this drilling hole which is in between 450 meter to 530 meter below the surface. This limestone is light grey in colour, fossiliferous, sandy in nature, moderately hard and compacted. -

Diversity of Cropping Systems in Chittagong Region
Bangladesh Rice J. 21 (2) : 109-122, 2017 Diversity of Cropping Systems in Chittagong Region S M Shahidullah1*, M Nasim1, M K Quais1 and A Saha1 ABSTRACT The study was conducted over all 42 upazilas of Chittagong region during 2016 using pre-tested semi- structured questionnaire with a view to document the existing cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity in the region. The most dominant cropping pattern Boro−Fallow−T. Aman occupied about 23% of net cropped area (NCA) of the region with its distribution over 38 upazilas out 42. The second largest area, 19% of NCA, was covered by single T. Aman, which was spread out over 32 upazilas. A total of 93 cropping patterns were identified in the whole region under the present investigation. The highest number of cropping patterns was 28 in Naokhali sadar and the lowest was 4 in Begumganj of the same district. The lowest crop diversity index (CDI) was observed 0.135 in Chatkhil followed by 0.269 in Begumganj. The highest value of CDI was observed in Banshkhali, Chittagong and Noakhali sadar (around 0.95). The range of cropping intensity values was recorded 103−283%. The maximum value was for Kamalnagar upazila of Lakshmipur district and minimum for Chatkhil upazila of Noakhali district. As a whole the CDI of Chittagong region was 0.952 and the average cropping intensity at the regional level was 191%. As per the findings, the magnesium concentration for banana contrasts Magnesium Arum between 0.843 µg/g and 3.654µg/g. Musa cavendishii from Satkania Upazila contains the Banana highest value while, the lowest amount is found in Musa paradisiaca from Lama Upazila. For Vegetable and Pulse arums, the amount varies between 0.476 and 21.3456µg/g. The highest amount was found in arums, Colocasia esculenta (Patiya upazila) i.e. 21.3456µg/g and the lowest amount appears from the same species at Boailkhali upazila. In vegetables, the quantity fluctuates between 1.62 and 5.93 µg/g with the maximum amount found in Anowara upazila. Magnesium in pulses was observed in the range 6.5333-28.3208 µg/g. -

J .Soil .Nature .1(3): 52-58 The study was conducted in Patiya and Satkania upazila of Chittagong district during 2005-2006 to assess the adoption status, agronomic practices and profitability of improved tomato variety among the farmers. Data were analyzed through tabular methods and Cobb- Douglas production model. The adoption status of improved tomato variety was found very low. Considering all the improved varieties that are cultivated in the study area Surokka (Indian variety) are ranked first followed by Ratan (BARI variety) and Ruma VF (Indian variety). Farmers’ consciousness about improved tomato cultivation was found increasing. Gross margin was Tk 101566/ha and Tk 140015/ha on the basis of variable cost and cash cost respectively. Per hectare net return from tomato cultivation was Tk 100338 on the basis of full cost. On the basis of variable cost, returns to labour and returns to irrigation were Tk 483 and Tk 13.33 respectively. Major reasons in favour of improved tomato cultivation were higher yields, thick fruit skin, large size, long durability and high price due to attractive colour and size. -

Groundwater zoning is very important, especially for irrigation project as well as drinking needs. So, the present study aims to assess the zoning of groundwater at the Joypurhat district located in the north-west region of Bangladesh. MIKE SHE modelling tool has been used for this study. A groundwater flow model has been developed with calibrating for the period of 2001 to 2006 and validating for 1995 to 2000. As Hand Tube Well (HTW) and Shallow Tube Well (STW) operate under suction mode and they can operate with full efficiency when groundwater table remains within 6m from ground surface, this depth has been considered as the safe yield criteria. Groundwater zoning has been done based on the safe yield criteria. At the end of April groundwater level goes below 6m from the ground surface in Kali, Khetlal, Akkelpur and Panchbibi upazila.
