It depicts two gods and a goddess, identified as the Egyptian deities Re-Horakhte, Seth and Hathor/Wadjet on the basis of their iconography and the inscription on the rear of the amulet. Though it lacks a secure archaeological context, we claim that it should be assigned to the Ramesside period on the basis of the deities depicted and mentioned in the inscription. The amulet is another indicator of the flourishing contacts between Azekah and Egypt during the twelfth century BCE. 150 MEIR EDREY, ERAN ARIE, HILA MAY and ASSAF YASUR-LANDAU: The Iron Age II Tombs of Area E, Tel Achziv: Between Local Traditions and the Consolidation of the Tyrian Polity ABSTRACT: During the 1963 excavation season at Tel Achziv, directed by M.W. Prausnitz, three cist tombs were unearthed in Area E, on the eastern part of the mound. These tombs, built of large roughly-hewn stone blocks, previously dated to the Iron Age IB, display a rich material culture, consisting of pottery vessels, weapons, jewellery and other small finds. To date, only parts of the assemblage of these tombs have been published in preliminary publications. Here, for the first time, we consider the entirety of the tomb assemblages, including ceramic, metal and other finds, as well as tomb architecture and human remains. -

(D) The Oriental Institute is pleased to present a comprehensive Monday, June 18: JERUSALEM: David Citadel Hotel tour of Israel. Uniquely situated at the crossroads of cultures, Touring begins on the Mt. of Olives and Mt. Scopus. Viewing Israel is among the most historically rich areas in the world. The Jerusalem from this perspective gives us an understanding of the Oriental Institute has had an archaeological presence there historical ramifications of its location. We enter the Old City at the Citadel built by Herod, and begin our historical overview from its since the early 1900s, when founder James Henry Breasted sent walls. Today’s Old City touring will focus on the First Temple an expedition to excavate at the site of Megiddo. The dig period including Hezekiah’s fortifications and the City of David, covered a span in time from 5000 to 600 BC. Each layer was where excavations have exposed the city and shaft leading to the carefully uncovered to reveal successive cultures that city’s water supply in the Kidron Valley. The city of Capernaum was a small fishing village on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, about two miles west of the Jordan River. A. The Hebrew name for this village is Keœfar NahΩum, which means, “village of Nahum.” B. While this ancient town is not mentioned by name in the Old Testament, it is mentioned sixteen times in the New Testament. C. Matthew refers to Capernaum as our Lord’s “own city” (Matt 9:1), for it became the center of His Galilean ministry. D. This is interesting since He was not born in Capernaum, His parents did not live in there, and He did not grow up there! E. Jesus performed more miracles and preached more sermons in and around Capernaum than at any other place during His entire ministry. F. The residents of this prosperous town were common people who made their living from fishing, agriculture, and trade. G. The road leading to Damascus passed nearby, providing a commercial link with regions to the north and south. H. Capernaum was also a garrison town, housing a detachment of Roman soldiers, under a centurion, along with government officials. II. It was in the vicinity of Capernaum that Jesus chose several of His apostles. -

Researchers debate whether Galilean cities utilized trade routes along the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean or were self-sufficient, with little access to trade. An analysis of material culture found at specific sites can most efficiently determine the extent of trade in the region. If commerce is extensive, a significant assemblage of foreign goods will be found; an overwhelming majority of provincial artifacts will suggest minimal trade. -

Excavating a Battle: The Intersection of Textual Criticism, Archaeology, and Geography The Problem of Hill City Just as similarities or variant forms of personal names can create textual problems, the same .( ֶּ֖ג ַבע) and Geba (גִּבְע ָ֔ ה) is true of geographic names. CENTRE D’ARCHÉOLOGIE MÉDITERRANÉENNE DE L’ACADÉMIE POLONAISE DES SCIENCES ÉTUDES et TRAVAUX XXII 2008 JOLANTA MŁYNARCZYK Architectural and Functional/Liturgical Development of the North-West Church in Hippos (Sussita) 148 JOLANTA MŁYNARCZYK In July 2007, the eighth season of excavations was completed at the so-called North- West Church at Hippos (Sussita), one of the cities of the Decapolis. The church was explored by a Polish team within the framework of an international project devoted to the unearth- ing of the remains of that Graeco-Roman and Byzantine-Umayyad period town, headed by Arthur Segal of the University of Haifa. Despite the fact that as many as four churches have so far been uncovered at Sussita,1 it is only the North-West Church (NWC) that became one of the examples discussed by A. Ovadiah in his paper listing Byzantine-peri- od churches excavated within the borders of the present-day Israel, in which architectural changes apparently refl ect some liturgical modifi cations.2 Unfortunately, A. Ovadiah’s interpretation of the NWC (published in 2005) not only was based on the reports of the early seasons of our fi eldwork (2002, 2003), but also proved to be rather superfi cial one, a fact which calls for a careful re-examination of the excavation data. Perhaps the most important fact about the NWC is that this has been one of rare in- stances attested for the region of a church that was still active as such during the Um- ayyad period. Three Conquests of Canaan
ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case. -
