Objective: We investigated the content of 59 cannabis-related mobile apps for Apple and Android devices as of November 26, 2014. Methods: The Apple and Google Play app stores were searched using the terms ªcannabisº and ªmarijuana.º Three trained coders classified the top 20 apps for each term and each store, using a coding guide. Apps were examined for the presence of 20 content codes derived by the researchers. Results: Total apps available for each search term were 124 for cannabis and 218 for marijuana in the Apple App Store, and 250 each for cannabis and marijuana on Google Play.

The shift caused the political and cultural climate surrounding cannabis to become more lenient, giving way to increased images and references of marijuana in popular culture and subsequently causing the formation of pro-cannabis advocacy groups and organizations. Currently, however, the only types of activism taking place to support the decriminalization of cannabis in the U.S. consists of lobbying by nonprofit organizations, such as NORML and the Drug Policy Alliance, and festivals like the Boston Freedom Rally, the Global Marijuana March and the Seattle Hempfest. While each method of activism serves as a valid form of celebrating human rights, educating individuals on the harmful impacts of criminalizing cannabis and advocating for fair federal- and state-level cannabis laws, examples of formal online activism is noticeably absent. Currently, organizations are pushing to gain support for The Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act, a bipartisan legislation that removes marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act, thus decriminalizing the substance at the federal level and enabling states to set their own policies. In December 2020, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the MORE Act. In Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, and Paraguay, mothers were the driving force behind the shift toward regulation for the medical use of cannabis, which marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of drugs in the region: for the first time in some Latin American countries, the production of narcotic drugs started being considered as having a beneficial potential for these nations marked by illicit traffic and an impor- tant war on drugs. However, the mobilization of mothers seemed contradictory at first sight, because of the double judgment that was—and still is—weighed on cannabis. First, there is a legal condemnation that prohibits cannabis in the name of social safety (delinquency) and public health (addiction).
