Inman Park Advocator 5 February 2013 Kwanza Hall Wants YOU to Volunteer for Inman Park Festival 2013! Since being elected almost a decade ago as our Second District Councilman, Kwanza Hall has been an ardent supporter of Inman Park in general and Inman Park Festival in particular. At left, the Councilman sports the distinctive Camo T-shirt featuring the Inman Park butterfly logo issued only to new Festival Trash & Recycling volunteers who sign on for a two-hour shift, either Saturday or Sunday of Festival, at one of four zones: Poplar Circle, Main Tent, Delta Park, or Edgewood Avenue. (Most zones feature a sound stage, so volunteers can groove to the live music for which Festival is known while wheeling filled “herbies” to the dumpster or golf cart or slinging bags of recyclables.) All volunteers are issued rugged, green, flock-lined (non-latex) gloves to avoid taking on a single speck of dirt! Given his many years of support for the neighborhood and its Festival, it is no surprise that recently, an item caught his eye at Festival and he added it to his “must-have” list of Inman Park memorabilia: every Festival function (such as Home Tour, Street Market, Beer Sales) succeeds through the efforts of the almost 1,000 volunteers it takes to put on each year’s Festival. Each function is coordinated by those who issue the VOLUNTEER T-shirts but who themselves are distinguished by their STAFF T-shirts. Trash & Recycling put its own unique spin on T-shirts for coordinators, and the Councilman decided he MUST have one! Here he is (above right), flexing his muscles in the distinctive Camo T-shirt worn by the zone “Generals”. If you want to join Kwanza in “wearing the Camo” at Festival 2013, April 26 through 28, 2013, visit the Festival volunteer website at www.inmanparkfestival.org/volunteer and select Trash & Recycling, or email [email protected]. If all the Trash & Recycling are gone or you have other skills to contribute to Festival, many other volunteer opportunities exist and are best seen on the website. Meanwhile, Councilman Kwanza Hall says, “I want YOU to volunteer for the Inman Park Festival!”

Inman Park Advocator 9 February 2013 Mary Lin Spelling Bee Returns By BoyD BaKer • [email protected] Annis Barry of feels that Spelling Bees are an American institution. “Bees provide a link to the past. Spelling contests have been around since the time of the one-room schoolhouse,” says Barry. It had been a few years since Mary Lin Elementary had a spelling bee. Parent Gary Capelouto used to organize one within the school but it ended when Gary’s kids left the school. Mary Lin Elementary administration felt the Bee interfered with the school day, so Barry looked to the PTA and to volunteers. Buzzy ® for Pain Relief, a fast acting pain reliever for shots, sponsored the event. MoJo’s Pizza in Oakhurst donated dinner. The judges for the event were: Mary Jo Bryan, Susan Shaw, and Mike Weiss. The word callers were: Wendy Baker and Halle Griffee. A good sound system is essential to a Spelling Bee. Martin Steib volunteered his time and expertise to ensure all could be heard clearly. Mary Lin Spelling Bee returned Thursday, January 17. Twenty-three students in 4th and 5th grade signed up for the competition. Mary Lin Auditorium hummed with about 150 parents and kids; all hoping their friend or family member would win. The first round was a practice round, the contestants tried to settle their jitters. They practiced spelling in front of the microphone and the crowd. To ensure they knew the word to be spelled, they learned to ask word callers to repeat the words or they asked for it to be used in a sentence. Then began 40 minutes of fun; the competitors performed gallantly spelling words both easy and challenging. At the beginning were words like “superstar” and “family,” they soon progressed to challenging words like “intuitive” and “provincial.” Slowly, the field narrowed. Each incorrectly spelled word resulted in a sharp ring of a bell - DING! That sound was then followed by applause from the audience. The audience recognized and supported the efforts of each student as they left the stage; this was one competition kids hoped no one clapped early for them. And then there were two: Neil Barry and Theo Wimar. Mrs. Barry announced to the crowd the Georgia Association of Educator rules. If Contestant A misspelled their word, Contestant B must spell it correctly AND then spell another word correctly until there was a winner. The air in the auditorium was thick with anticipation. When Neil Barry misspelled “empirical,” Theo had a chance to win. By spelling “empirical” correctly as well as a second word, “fantastically,” he was declared the winner. In the end, the top three student spellers were Theo, Neil, & Mylan Lowe. All of the contestants were great sports and will be future competitors. Theo Weimar will represent Mary Lin Elementary on February 7 at Gideon Elementary during the Atlanta Public School System Bee. Wish him the best of luck if you see him! Many thanks go out to Annis Barry, Peggy Edwards, Kelly Crutcher, the PTA, and all the volunteers and sponsors who made this night a really special one for all the families and the kids. I am looking forward to next year already.

Inman Park Advocator 10 February 2013 The Spirit of Inman Park: Porch Parties By Pat weStricK • [email protected] If you have been in the neighborhood for a while, you are probably aware of the monthly Porch Parties. So who thought up that idea? And, when did they start?

You all know the story of Freedom Park, and how the property had been condemned and cleared of homes in the 1960s for two expressways: I-485 and the Stone Mountain Porch Party Tollway. (And if you don’t know that story, stay tuned and I’ll try to get Cathy Bradshaw, our resident heroine, to do a February 22 • 7:30 p.m. quick recap in a future Advocator issue.) By the 1990s, and through the efforts of many intown neighborhoods joining At the home of together as CAUTION (Citizens Against Unnecessary Thoroughfares In Older Neighborhoods,) aided and abetted Melissa Miller & Thom Abelew by its more rowdy arm, The ROADBUSTERS (featuring 211 Hurt Street our own Danny Feig-Sandoval who famously chained his – I think orange – Volvo to a tree in Shadyside Park.) “The Bring a dish to share Road” was finally defeated and Freedom Park was officially & your favorite beverage. created. Long story, but what happened next is that the GA DOT then left it up to each affected neighborhood to decide • • • what they wanted to do with the property within its borders. Your porch wants to host a party! Well, as we all know, we Inman Parkers like nothing better Call Pat or Richard Westrick to get on the schedule. than a good fight among ourselves. (Well, maybe we like 404.523.4801 beer better, but that’s a discussion for another day.) There were folks who wanted all the land to be a park. Some wanted all houses, to replace what we had lost. Some wanted a mix of park and houses, but couldn’t decide on how much/ Has your tub lost its luster? Tired of that dated many of each. There were meetings, and more meetings and colored tile? raised voices, and well…you get the idea (and this was before the Yahoo! Group). One can never accuse this neighborhood of a lack of passion.

The IPNA President through much of this was Carol Mitchell (who, with her husband Ben, has recently moved back to Inman Park after 20 years in New York City.) While on a trip somewhere in the northeast, she had visited an historic Don’t replace it! Reface it... neighborhood. She came back with a report about the informal parties they held each month. Each party rotated from home to home. She thought that might be a way to get everyone to chill out and begin speaking to one another again, and thus was born the Inman Park Porch Parties. They have been going on almost monthly ever since.

The best thing about Porch Parties is that one does not need At 1/4 of the price! an invitation. So new residents, long-time residents, folks who don’t participate in anything else – all are welcome. Inman Park Advocator 18 February 2013 The Freedom Park Conservancy By DaviD haMilton, inMan ParK FPc rePreSentative & v.P. FPc • [email protected] The Freedom Park Conservancy (FPC) is an organization dedicated to the improvement and ongoing evolution of Freedom Park. The park, for those that may not know, is an outgrowth of the Georgia DOT plan for the Stone Mountain Tollway. Formulated in the 1960s, this expressway would have connected with suburban Stone Mountain to the east, Georgia 400 to the north and I-675 to the south, destroying much of what would become the heart of . Neighborhood activists lead by early Inman Park pioneers and others successfully fought the road under the 1980s CAUTION (Citizens Against Unnecessary Roads in Older Neighborhoods) banner. The road was finally defeated and the Presidential Parkway that runs from Moreland Avenue to was constructed as a local road with the new Carter Presidential Library as its focal point. Shortly before the 1996 Olympic Games, land cleared for the road became a new city park and CAUTION became the Freedom Park Conservancy.

The Conservancy is made up of board members representing each of the Freedom Park neighborhoods-- Inman Park, Old 4th Ward, Poncey-Highland, Candler Park, Druid Hills and until recently Virginia Highland (they are currently inactive) and has several other at- large regional members. Recently under the leadership of former president Dave Blackley and current president Matt Wilder the Conservancy is taking a more active role in determining the future direction of the park. Planned projects include a much needed update to the Park Master Plan (the current one is over 20 years old), a coordinated effort to help foster the park’s role as the official Public Art Park in the City of Atlanta and the spearheading of numerous physical improvements including improved and additional park lighting, refurbished and new interpretive signage, new park identity signage, and the creation of formal pedestrian entries to the park replacing DOT traffic barriers at key entrances to the surrounding neighborhoods. In addition, the conservancy coordinates volunteer care of park greenery and tree planting programs.

The Conservancy will soon be in active fundraising mode in its quest to maintain a more active role in park development. The organization meets monthly and is open to all public comment concerning ways to improve the park. Anyone with ideas for park improvements anyone or wishing to speak at a Conservancy Meeting should contact me (I am your Inman Park representative and am currently serving as organization’s Vice President) at [email protected]. The organization can be found on the web at freedompark. org and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/freedomparkconservancy. You can also follow us on Twitter, @freedomparkatl. We are currently not engaged in day to day maintenance or safety issues in the park—any concerns in these areas should be addressed directly to the City of Atlanta Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs and to the Atlanta Police Department. We can however help to make sure that any chronic park problems get the attention of the proper authorities.

As the BeltLine opens its and Historic 4th Ward Park, Freedom Park becomes an increasingly important part of the city’s park, trail and bike system linking Atlanta’s Eastside neighborhoods to the BeltLine and to Downtown Atlanta. The Conservancy in close coordination with Inman Park and the other Freedom Park neighborhoods will plan and advocate for positive change in the park helping this important city asset live up to its considerable potential. As we move forward to a move active and exciting time in the park’s history please contact me and the Conservancy with ideas for making the Park a better and more beautiful place for everyone.

Trees stand barren of leaves, I would dream of quacking ducks, and bright white geese, save for papery rust remnants of fine Dutch beer (Grolsch) and Gouda cheese. Clinging to scrub resistance to the requisites of autumn. A bed of plastic sharp, and cinder stone, so half asleep lay I, and when I turned, I kid you not, there came this IP Butterfly. Dull blue and brown bands of woodland I rubbed my eyes, ‘twas really true, not a silly dream, stream motionlessly an angel, she spoke with golden voice, as strange as that may seem; across low mountains a bare distance off. “General Grolsch wake up, stand you must, and also you should flee, the IP police are on their way, smart they are, your dynamite they could see.” Snow covers all. Too late it was, they caught me clean, and what else could I do? I confessed it all, and what I’d seen, were Jessica, James and Lou. Beautification Maintenance, I am told, started in the early days of the neighborhood as a sort of garden club.
