Vassar College Libraries and the Russian Department were especially interested in this event because of the Archives and Special Collections Library’s hold- ings of a significant number of books once owned by the author. To mark this occasion, an exhibition has been organized drawing from this material. Ivan Turgenev and His Library is on view for the spring semester of the 2018–2019 academic year. This catalogue accompanies and documents the exhibition. Essays by Vassar faculty shed light on the issues at hand and their context. -

He was born in Orel, one hundred miles south of Moscow, in 1818. He had a privileged background, educated at home by tutors, and went on to the best of University educations—Moscow, St. Petersburg, Berlin. The influence of German philosophers, like Hegel, marked him strongly, and he soon returned to Russia, eager to share his knowledge of Hegel with Russian students. In l841 he returned to Russia, where he found himself increasingly swept up into literary circles. Despite intense opposition from within his family, especially from his mother, Turgenev persisted in devoting himself to his writing. Turgenev’s first literary successes were his ‘Sportsman’s Sketches,’ in which he made successful literature out of his love of hunting. For several years he lived and worked in Paris, until returning to a Russia which was not especially congenial to him. Significant literary figures, like Dostoyevsky, were in exile, and he himself was kept under close police surveillance. As his reputation grew, and his desire to travel out of his oppressive country intensified, Turgenev returned to Europe, in search both of spiritual alliances, and of relief, at a variety of spas, from what he was convinced was his increasingly bad health. -

At the heart of this study, which examines the emergence of the Russian realist novel in the years between 1850 and 1880, is the following question: How is the Russian understanding of the modern self (subjectivity) related to the formal aesthetic features of the Russian novel? I focus on three novels – Ivan Turgenev’s Rudin (1856), Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Demons (1872), and Lev Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina (1873-77) – in order to account for relations between subjectivity and form in the nineteenth-century Russian novel as well as these authors’ various conceptualizations of the human subject. -

chapter 5 Turgenev and the Woman Question: Layering Barriers Turgenev is, perhaps more than any author, the writer of Russia’s women.1 Introduction Ivan Turgenev has traditionally been viewed as one of the nineteenth-century Russian male writers most sympathetic towards the position of women, par- ticularly in his depiction of positive heroines such as Elena Stakhova of On the Eve. However, in what is almost a direct inversion of work that has identified Tolstoy as “crypto-feminist”,2 Turgenev has come to occupy an uneasy position amongst feminist literary critics. In her observation that “the role of many female characters in male-authored Russian literature is to act as the Other”, Marsh has noted that “this phenomenon finds its most widespread expression in the novels of Turgenev”.3 Indeed, not only does he depict enigmatic hero- ines such as Asya, and Zinaida from First Love, it might be argued that Turgenev’s long line of “strong women”, such as Natalya (Rudin), Liza (Home Of the Gentry), Elena, and later incarnations such as Marianna (Virgin Soil [1877]) are also ‘other’, because they act as a foil to the superfluous man, with whom they fall in love.4 Heldt has deemed Turgenev’s idealisation of these positive heroines to be “terrible perfection”, which was “frightening to men who could not match it in ‘manly’ action and inhibiting to women who were supposed to incarnate it, or else”.5 It was against this background that my previous work sought to clarify Turgenev’s position in the debate on the Woman Question.6 This earlier study, which adopted the Neo-Formalist approach used by Michael O’Toole and Joe 1 Costlow, “Speaking the Sorrow of Women”, 328. -

DEC 2? 1931 321-5 A II rights resi'rvc' INTRODUCTION ft TURGENEV was the first writer who was able, having both Sclavic and universal imagination enough for it, to interpret modern Russia to the outer world, and Virgin Soil was the last word of his greater testament. It was the book in which many English readers were destined to make his acquaintance about a generation ago, and the effect of it was, like Swinburne's Songs Before Sunrise, Mazzini's Duties of Man, and other congenial documents, to break up the insular confines in which they had been reared and to enlarge their new horizon. Afterwards they went on to read Tolstoi, and Turgenev's powerful and antipathetic fellow-novelist, Dostoievsky, and many other Russian writers: but as he was the greatest artist of them all, his individual revelation of his country's predicament did not lose its effect.
