Spotlight on a Program - Sen◊Teen

In response to a request made to LAVA from the NM Aging and Long Term Services Dept., a pilot program was implemented this past fiscal year to promote in- tergenerational volunteerism. Stations were identified where youth volunteers could work alongside senior volunteers. United Blood Services and LAVA Quilters are two stations where intergenerational volunteerism has been promoted. More stations will be identified in the coming year to continue with this intergenerational concept. Youth volunteers helping seniors is another arm of this program. Teens continue to help in the Day Out program and a new program, Teen Tech Tu- toring, has been established to help seniors keep up with new technology. Through this program, seniors can have appointments set up by LAVA with teen volunteers for help with smart phones, tablets, laptops, iPods, etc. The appointments are typically one-to-two-hours long, and they take place on the lower level of the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Consider setting up an appointment to get help with your tech devices – just call the LAVA office at 662-8923.

YES Corps Cleans Up

LARSO was fortunate to have the YES (Youth Envi- ronmental Services) Corps offer to help at the Betty Ehart Senior Center the week of July 11th. For three hours every day, Monday through Thursday, these mid-schoolers and crew leaders tidied up the landscape and then spent time playing games and putting together puzzles with the Day Out clients. Even though the weather was quite hot during that week, these volunteers were good sports about helping out!

HELP Driver Appreciation Cookout

A cookout was held at the BESC on July 15th from 3 – 5 p.m. to say “thank you!” to the volunteer HELP drivers who give rides to people needing transportation to medical appointments in Espanola, Santa Fe and, occasionally, Albuquerque. This was a wonderful opportunity for the drivers to get to know each other a bit and see who all is involved in this volunteer effort. The HELP driver program was started in the early 80’s and was under the sponsorship of the Lions Club until March of 2015, when the program was transferred to LAVA. The number of drivers has grown over the past year, but so has the need for this type of transportation. If you are interested in becoming a HELP driver, please contact Linda at the LAVA office at 662-8923. P a g e 9

Volunteer Opportunities

The LAVA webpage (part of the LARSO website under “Volunteer”) has ongoing volunteer opportu- nities listed through VolunteerMatch. Please have a look and see if there are any listings that are of interest to you.

Upcoming Events:

 The annual Los Alamos County Fair is fast approaching, and volunteers are needed for monitor- ing the displays at the library on Friday, August 12, and Saturday, August 13.  Volunteers are also needed to be judges at the county fair. If you are skilled at quilting, preserv- ing, baking, etc., please contact the LAVA office for more information about being a judge for the fair.  Three volunteers are needed to help with the 90+ ice cream social at the BESC on Friday, Au- gust 26, at 2:00 p.m.

If you can help with any of these volunteer opportunities, please contact the LAVA office at 662- 8923.

LAVA also would like to express thanks to you volunteers who helped with the ScienceFest on Sat- urday, July 16, and the Triathlon on July 30. Your help is very much appreciated!

Happy August Everyone! Keep Cool! Linda and Sarah
