The Glen Cove Medical Transport program provides free transportation to all Glen Cove residents for doctor appointments, physical therapy sessions and any other non-emergency doctor, hospital, lab or medical center visits. “Due to the popularity of this program, we are looking for more volunteer drivers – individuals with a valid driver’s license and a big heart,” said Carol Waldman, Executive Director of the Glen Cove Senior Center. “The program runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. three days a week; with more volunteer drivers, we would like to expand the program from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.” While Glen Cove’s Medical Transport program began years earlier, in 2007 North Coast Subaru donated a vehicle to provide additional help to meet the community’s non-emergency transportation needs. • Film Land Tirol Go Back a Long Way – Back to the Days When Pictures Were “Learning to Walk”
The origins of the film land Tirol go back a long way – back to the days when pictures were “learning to walk”. It is remarkable that only one year after the first public film showings by the brothers Lumière in Paris at the end of 1895 the first short film shows – so-called “living photographs” – were being held in the Tirol; the earliest projections were shown in Trent in October 1896 and by the beginning of November of the same year in Innsbruck, in July 1897 the first film shows followed in Meran. In those early years it was the travelling cinemas that fascinated the Tirolean population, frequently the venues for the showings were breweries and inns or circuses and annual fairs. These early films with scenes filmed in Europe by Messrs. Lumière frequently only lasted for a few minutes. By 1900 a so-called cinematograph – apparatus for making, developing and showing films – produced and showed scenes of a Tirolean folk dance, probably a “Schuhplattler”, in Meran. This film has unfortunately disappeared, but it is regarded as the first “made in the Tirol” film production. In 1905 Frank Ormiston Smith, an Englishman, came to the Tirol to take cinematographic shots for lectures in England, a year later he was commissioned by the Tirolean Provincial Tourist Authority to prepare bioscopic scenes of the Tirol. They were then shown in Germany and England. These “commissions” included scenes like a Sunday church parade, a Corpus Christi procession, Schuhplattler dancing in Meran, “Across the Arlberg in Summer and in Winter” and “Life in Innsbruck on a Market Day”.

  • 2009–Senior Seminar, Ives, Blues, Porter
James Hepokoski Spring 2009 Music 458: Ives, Blues, Porter Visions of America: Competing concepts of musical style and purpose in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. We examine some stylistic and cultural bases of both “art” and “popular” music and their often uneasy interrelationships. This is neither a survey course nor one concerned with mastering a body of facts. Nor is it preoccupied with coming to aesthetic value judgments. Instead, it is a course in applying critical thinking and analysis to some familiar musical styles basic to the American experience: asking hard questions of differing early- and mid-twentieth-century repertories. Areas to be examined include: 1) Ives (selected songs, Concord Sonata, Second Symphony); 2) early blues (Bessie Smith, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, and others), including samples of African-American recorded precedents and related genres; 3) Broadway and popular song—including a brief look at Jerome Kern (selected numbers from Show Boat) followed by a closer study of Cole Porter (Anything Goes). Some main questions to be faced are: What aesthetic/contextual/analytical tools do we need to think more deeply about differing pieces of music that spring from or respond to markedly differing/diverse American subcultures? What are our presuppositions in listening to any of these musics, and to what extent might we profit by examining these presuppositions critically? The course will also make use of resources in Yale’s music collection—most notably the Charles Ives Papers and The Cole Porter Collection. We shall also be concerned with original recordings from the 1920s and 1930s.
