STATEMENT of PRINCIPLE No One Should Be Forced to Choose
STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLE No one should be forced to choose between her personal safety and dignity, and her job. But too often in the theater community this is exactly the choice that women must make. Sexual discrimination and harassment and gender-based violence often occur in the intimate and physical context of a theater production. Victims of such conduct face a stark choice between continuing to work in close collaboration with their abuser and quitting the show. Few can afford to give up a job and lose not only income, but also the opportunity for career advancement. There is a sense in the community that it is not necessarily in a victim’s best interest to report abuse because of fear that the response will be insufficient and open her up to retribution. In addition, many instances of abuse happen outside of the physical boundaries of a theater. No theater, union or guild currently takes responsible for handling such cases. However, the two people involved will most likely have to work together the next day or in another production, and the victims are left to deal with the aftermath by themselves. In the face of these realities, victims often choose silence and the abuse is allowed to continue. It is time for the theater community to break its own silence on harassment and abuse and formally address the problem. The reality is that those who behave abusively are generally in positions of power. Artistic directors hold the power to employ, playwrights have hiring approval; removing a director mid-rehearsal puts an entire production in doubt; losing a celebrity from the cast hurts ticket sales. -

Origins There Is Not Enough Evidence to Assert What Conditions Gave Rise to the First Cities
City A city is a relatively large and permanent human settlement.[1][2] Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town within general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law. Cities generally have complex systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation. The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process, but it also presents challenges to managing urban growth.[3] A big city or metropolis usually has associated suburbs and exurbs. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban areas, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centers for employment. Once a city expands far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed aconurbation or megalopolis. Origins There is not enough evidence to assert what conditions gave rise to the first cities. However, some theorists have speculated on what they consider suitable pre- conditions, and basic mechanisms that might have been important driving forces. The conventional view holds that cities first formed after the Neolithic revolution. The Neolithic revolution brought agriculture, which made denser human populations possible, thereby supporting city development.[4] The advent of farming encouraged hunter-gatherers to abandon nomadic lifestyles and to settle near others who lived by agricultural production. The increased population-density encouraged by farming and the increased output of food per unit of land created conditions that seem more suitable for city-like activities. In his book, Cities and Economic Development, Paul Bairoch takes up this position in his argument that agricultural activity appears necessary before true cities can form. -

What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. I could say things like, from Carbondale, Illinois and Mississippi and Worth Long: Atlanta. Cobb: Durham, North Carolina. Tennessee and Alabama, I'm not gonna do all of that. In town for the San 1 Francisco Symphony’s performance of his song cycle, Wainwright engaged in a lively Visitors exchange with a cross-section of Music students in the Albert Elkus Room. Wainwright is just one of the many guests who have contributed to the vibrant intellectual community 1, 9, 14–15 Heavy Lifters of the Department of Music over the past few years. Visiting from Italy, Israel, and the UK, Pedro Memelsdorf, Edwin Seroussi, and Peter Franklin have taught courses and delivered public 4–5 Faculty Update • Pianos lectures during their semester-long residencies and a series of shorter visits by leading composers from North 4 America, Europe, and Japan is currently underway. Our students and faculty have many accomplishments to be proud of—concerts and compositions, papers and publications—as you will see throughout this 6–8, 10 Alumni News newsletter, in which we also mourn the recent loss of several dear members of our community. The 6 Department of Music has endured the toughest financial crisis in the university’s history undiminished. 6–7 In Memoriam Although the end of that crisis is not yet in sight, we continue to strive to improve in our many areas of activity.
