Featured review about Thiruvananthapuram Beautiful and romantic place "I have visited Kerala last month with my girl friend. Such a romantic and peaceful place it was firstly we went to Thiruvananthapuram there we visited lake ohh! Such a wonderful lake it was full of greenery and pure water and roads also awesome, we went to boating nice and romantic experience there. Next day we visited padmanabhaswamy temple such a traditional temple it was, it is historical temple and You cannot enter the temple wearing modern dresses. After we visited nice museum it was, There is a beautiful walkway around the museum and Well maintained museum, nice walk around, nice mural paintings. Thiruvananthapuram it is also a nice zoo there is lot of animals I have never seen in others. It is a nice place for beautiful and romantic trips." - Ravi Kumar, Eluru, 4 days ago Awesome beach destination "Thiruvananthapuram place of sea beaches and fully covered with trees. Trees are not ordinary ones they have seen generations of different family. They are 50 to 60 years old. Shanghumug beach is one of the good beach installed with e-toilet and hawkers are present ground is installed with jhulla for kids. Nicely decorated place all over and people visit the place on vacation with there friends and family. Some of good hotels are there like and Indian air force station is near the beach itself and airport is also very near. If you plan to come via flight then you will definitely enjoy the scenario. Please do visit the place and many other places near by are attached to thiruvananthapuram which are beautiful." - Khivendra Attri, Pune, 1 month ago

Page 3/14 Every thing you want to know about the city "I recently came back from a trip to Trivandrum and Kanyakumari. The city has a tropical climate and so is hot and humid throughout. The rains can be a dampener if you visit during the monsoon. The roads are relatively clean and there is lot of greenery everywhere. The city is not so modern and sports a traditional look. A lot of shopping places and a vibrant atmosphere prevails.

Getting around :- It is a lot easy and the auto drivers generally are helpful, friendly and rates are reasonable. (This is very much different to what I experience daily in Bangalore). But still do ask them and fix a price before you board. The local KSRTC buses though are plentifully available are hard to identify and the destinations are almost always displayed in Malayalam only.

Getting In:- Trivandrum Jn and Kochuveli are the 2 main railway stations in the city and trains connect Trivandrum to most parts of India. Lot of state transport and private Volvo buses are available from nearby cities. Trivandrum airport is located close to city (about 20 minutes by car/auto from the city centre) unlike many other cities.

Too see:- beach, Padmanabhaswamy temple, Zoo, museum, Veli tourist village and shankumugham beach are some of the important places to visit while you are in the city. Most of the attractions are all located well within the city and close to each other, except the Kovalam beach. KTDC has package tours a half a day sight seeing for some 300 per head. But personally I feel it is not required as most attractions are nearby and autos can help you.

Tips:- Always, book your hotel in advance if travelling with family and I did a mistake of not doing so. Once I reached there, I could not find accommodation in some good hotels that I had short- listed and then had to settle in a shabby lodge where there was no decent eatery near by.

Avoid visiting the city when monsoon is at its peak, the roads gets clogged and is difficult to move around.

At the zoo, take the service of the battery operated vehicle at 50 rupees per head, the best way to see around within a short time and the driver cum guide (Subin) was very good and helpful.

Do not miss the museum as we find some old artefacts, history of kings, different tribes in Kerala, Kings chariot and so on, but what I liked the most was the model of the famous carved in wood. Simply amazing !!

The temple has strict dress code and we need to leave almost all our belongings in the cloak room and it is a chaotic process. So be prepared for the same. The best approach would be to plan the temple as a stand alone itinerary and leave all your belongings in your hotel or have

Page 4/14 someone in your group retain all your belongings while the rest visit the temple.

Food :- During my short stay I enjoyed the food at Hotel Annapoorna, a vegetarian eatery located close to the temple and the bus stand. I have seen some good reviews about the India coffee house located opposite the railway station, but could not go there owing to lack of time and bad weather. A lot of road side eateries are present, they smell good and tasty, but not sure how hygienic they are and personally I would not risk having any food at such places being a tourist.

Overall a nice old clean city with some good attractions and relatively good local people." - Saty, Bangalore, Aug 31, 2014 Thiruvananthapuram - truly the capital of God's own country! "When we booked our flight tickets to Thiruvananthapuram, enroute to , it was simply because it was the nearest city to which flights were available. We had a day in hand, due to ticket availability problems, and while my husband just wanted to catch up on some much needed sleep, all I wanted to see was the Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Our expectations from the city weren't too great, which is probably why the city was a real surprise to us.

Our first view of the city was from the air, a stunning melange of the clear blue of the sea, the light brown of the sand, and the bright green of the palm trees, extending as far as our eyes could see. Add this to the simple beauty of the airport itself, built in the traditional Kerala style, and I was happy to have arrived.

The city itself was a wonderful fusion of the old and the new, with most of the city still retaining the original Kerala architecture, with quite a bit of greenery around every house, while the modernity is very visible too, with numerous residential complexes coming up, especially in the suburbs.

But what I shall forever remember about this city is the sight of women driving autos and running petrol pumps all by themselves. Truly liberation of women from the usual sterotypes!!!

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The main attraction of the town, is of course, the Padmanabhaswamy temple - where Vishnu reclines on Adishesha (also known as Anantha), with seated on a lotus (Padma), emerging from his nave (nabha). The name, 'Thiruvananthapuram' itself means 'The Abode of Anantha', also known as Adishesha. This temple belongs to the royal family of Travancore, who still play a major part in the temple activities. It is a beautiful temple, built in the Tamil style, with a beautiful . The temple itself is huge, with beautiful sculptures all around. NOTE: Men are allowed into the temple only with dhotis. Pants/shorts are not allowed. For women, only sarees or skirts(full skirts, pavadas) are allowed, salwar kameez not allowed.

Page 5/14 The Attukkal Bhagavathy temple is another attraction for the devout, and is known as the Sabarimala of women, since it is mostly frequented by women. The main deity is Bhagavathy or ,in her incarnation as . (Kannagi is well known in southern India as the herione of the 'silapathigaram' a story about Kannagi and her husband, who undergo trials and tribulations and finally are unfairly treated by the king of . When her husband is unjustly executed, Kannagi brings forth the power of her righteousness and sets fire to the whole city. She is believed to have passed through Kerala on her way back, and there are numerous temples around Kerala dedicated to her. The temple is small, but beautiful, and well worth a visit.

The Museum complex, which comprises the Napier Museum, which houses beautiful sculptures and collections of the royal family, the Sri Chitra art gallery, which have some beautiful works of art, including paintings of , and the zoo, is a must-visit. More about these later....

Activities & things to do: You can set aside a day just for the Museum complex. Whether you are an art lover, or just like to see beautiful things, or if you have kids and have to keep them engaged, this is the place for you.

We were enchanted the minute we entered the complex, when the sounds of the traffic were replaced by birdsong, and my son was thrilled by the sight of kingfishers and babblers flying about happily. There is a huge garden/park, where you can lounge around for ages without anyone disturbing you. The place is large enough for you to remain at peace even in the crowded holiday season. Children can run around without being told not to walk on the grass.

The zoo, especially, is great for kids, one of the better ones in India. The animals are not in cages, but in huge enclosures separated by moats. My son loved his fist sight of ostriches, zebras and giraffes, while being thrilled by the lions, leopards and the huge variety and number of deer.

The bird section and the snake house are disappointments, and can be ignored, but even then, be prepared to spend half a day in the zoo itself!

The memory that I shall carry of the zoo is the sight of hundreds and hundreds of bats all over the trees, making a noise like nothing I have heard before. This was the first time I realised that bats could be seen in the day, and it was just great!!!!!

The Museum complex is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9AM to 6PM. It is closed on Mondays.

There are lots of other places to visit around Thiruvananthapuram.

Foremost among these, and also the most popular is Kovalam Beach, about 15 Kms away, probably the most famous in Kerala, and with due reason. The beach is not just beautiful, it is also among the safest, with life guards all over the place. While we amused ourselves making

Page 6/14 sand castles and playing in the water, there are also other things to do. There are lots of boatmen who take you to see corals and coloured fishes. While we did not have time to take up the boatman's offer, it is something that must be tried out!

Another interesting beach is Shanghumugham Beach, just on the outskirts of Trivandrum. Less known than the other beaches around, this beach is a wonderful attraction with its white sands.

The Padmanabhapuram Palace, the seat of the Travancore Empire and the home of its royalty is about 55 Kms from Thiruvananthapuram, and is known for its beauty and rare articles preserved in it.

These are by no means the only places to visit around Thiruvananthapuram. As the capital of Kerala, it is very well connected by road, rail and air to all parts of the state, and there are lots of other interesting places to visit.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Thiruvananthapuram is well connected by road, rail as well as air to all parts of the country. As to accommodation, there are plenty of options all over the city, to fit all budgets.

If you plan to visit temples in Thiruvananthapuram, or anywhere in Kerala, carry suitable clothes. Men are not allowed to wear pants, and have to only wear Dhotis. Shorts are not allowed even under the dhotis, so beware of the guards at the entrance trained to see what you are wearing!!!! Women can wear sarees or long skirts, but salwar kameez are not allowed. Only small-sized purses are allowed inside the temple, so it is better to leave your mobile and cameras at home. However, the good news is that, if you are caught unprepared, there are cloak rooms to keep your valuables, and even dhotis on hire are available. So, go ahead, and enjoy a vacation in the capital of God's own country!!!" - Anu, Mumbai, Jun 5, 2009 East Fort & Chalai - the commercial essence of this town "East Fort, the old quarter of Trivandrum was the seat of the kings. Chalai is the busy market thoroughfare, once the commercial centre of the city and still one of its main marketplaces. Place retains the old, 'oriental bazaar' atmosphere.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Wander around this area just after sundown and absorb a bewildering array of activities - from a group of blind singers belting out malayalam movie numbers over a pa system to a bunch of pentecostal preachers rousing the flock with 'fire & brimstone' sermons. Also, if you are a hard-core non-vegetarian with the ability to subsume hygiene considerations for the best chicken in the world, make a beeline for 'Hotel Rehmainya', a 100 sq feet wonder. Established over 60 years ago, Rehmainya purveys its special brand of melt-in-the-mouth chicken in a unique style.

Page 7/14 Activities & things to do: wander about & gaze. Good non-veg food.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Get into an Auto from anywhere in Trivandrum and say 'Gandhi Park, East Fort'. Sit for a while in the Park and absorb the atmosphere. Wander about. Head for food. Wander a bit more. Head home." - Reality, Bangalore, May 26, 2006 Read 115 Thiruvananthapuram reviews on HolidayIQ.com
