In the 32nd matchup between these two franchises, the Vikings are looking to improve their overall home record (12-3-0) against the Saints. In the 2011 home matchup against New Orleans, Minnesota saw their five (12-3-0) game home winning streak end after a 42-20 loss. Vikings linebacker coach Adam Zimmer coached with New Orleans during the 2009 season when the Saints defeated the Vikings in the NFC Championship game and went on to win the SB XLIV title. 9/17 at Pittsburgh 9-8-0 The Steelers with host the Vikings for the first time since 2009 when Minnesota fell to Pittsburgh at Heinz Field, 27-17. The Vikings hold the overall series lead, 9-8, and look to improve to .500 in road games against the Steelers. This year’s clash will (4-5-0) be Mike Zimmer’s first against the Steelers since leaving AFC North to lead the Vikings in 2014. Minnesota and Tampa Bay will square off for the 55th time in franchise history. This game will mark the 28th time the Vikings 9/24 Tampa Bay 32-22-0 have hosted the Buccaneers with club looking to end a three-game home losing streak to Tampa Bay. The Vikings last home victory against the Buccaneers came on Sept. 20, 2001 in a close 20-16 game. From 1977-2001 the teams were division rivals (18-9-0) in the old NFC Central, with the Vikings compiling a 31-17 record during that stretch. The Buccaneers are 5-1 in the team’s six matchups since the NFC Central was disbanded. 10/1 Detroit 71-38-2 In 2016, the Lions defeated the Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium in the third overtime game between the two teams, with Detroit (39-15-1) holding a 3-0 record in those games. Lions K Matt Prater drilled a 58-yard field goal as time expired to send the game to overtime. 10/9 at Chicago 58-52-2 Week 5 will feature the 61st Monday Night Football game in Vikings franchise history and a Monday night rematch with division rival Chicago. The Vikings fell to the Bears on Halloween night in 2016, 20-10, to bring the team’s all-time record (22-31-2) against the Bears in Chicago to 22-31-2. 10/15 Green Bay 51-60-2 The Vikings will look to win back-to-back home matchups against the rival Packers in 2017, having defeated Green Bay 17-14 in the inaugural regular season game at U.S. Bank Stadium in 2016. With a victory, the all-time series in Minnesota would be (27-28-0) knotted at 28-28. 10/22 Baltimore 2-3-0 Minnesota will host Baltimore for the second time in franchise history. The Vikings are looking to stay undefeated against the (1-0-0) Ravens at home with their most recent matchup resulting in a 33-31 win on Oct. 18, 2009 at the Metrodome. The Vikings look to remain perfect in games played outside the United States in the franchise’s sixth international contest. 10/29 at Cleveland 11-4-0 Minnesota, which was part of the first-ever NFL game played in London (28-10 win over St. Louis in the 1983 preseason), holds an 11-4 series lead over Cleveland and has won four of the previous five meetings. Minnesota claimed a win, 34-27 (London) (4-2-0) over Pittsburgh at Wembley Stadium, during its most recent London trip (2013). Prior to the 2013 London trip, the team made four trips overseas for preseason games in the 1980s and 90s, (England 1983, Sweden ’88, Germany ’93, Japan ’94). Former Hokie Michael Vick, the first player picked in the 2001 NFL Draft, is scheduled to take over the starting quarterback duties for the Atlanta Falcons in 2002. Special Teams are an integral part of Hokie football and one of the units is called “Pride and Joy.” These NFL players are also a source of pride and joy due to their commitment to Virginia Tech on and off the field. Virginia Tech has recently constructed a display in the Hall of Legends in the Merryman Athletic Center to honor such former players. John Engelberger was a dominating defensive end who went from walk-on to four-year starter at Tech, to second-round NFL Draft pick, earning All-America honors and his college degree along the way. Waddy Harvey was a standout who started three seasons at defensive tackle and won the coveted Williams Award for leadership and character before joining the Buffalo Bills. Frank and Cheryl Beamer sponsored Harvey for recognition on the Pride and Joy display. Before starting an NFL career, Jim Pyne, a powerful center in the early 1990s, started 41 games and allowed just one sack in over 2,700 snaps on his way to becoming the Hokies’ first unanimous All-American. Michael Vick was an electrifying quarterback who made a lasting impact on college football while helping Virginia Tech to a national championship game and back-to-back 11-1 seasons before becoming the top NFL pick in 2001. Jim Pyne was the first player chosen overall in the NFL’s 1998 expansion draft. Head Coach Steve Kragthorpe Steve Kragthorpe Head Coach First Season Steve Kragthorpe, the former head coach at Tulsa University and the architect of one the nation’s most heralded rebuilding efforts, was named the 20th head football coach at the University of Louisville at a press conference on Jan. 9, 2007 in the press lounge at U of L’s Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. Named as the Golden Hurricane coach on December 18, 2002, Kragthorpe turned around the Tulsa program immediately. Prior to his arrival, Tulsa was a combined 2-21 in 2001 and 2002. However, it didn’t take Kragthorpe long to turn around the Golden Hurricane program, compiling an impressive 29-22 record and guiding Tulsa to bowl games in three of the last four seasons. “Steve has everything I look for in a head coach,” said U of L Vice President and Director of Athletics Tom Jurich. “He has a proven track record and has high integrity, great morals and values. I like that he’s a coach’s son and his father Dave is a highly decorated coach. Steve is a great fit for this community. He has produced extraordinary results in a difficult situation at Tulsa and has endeared himself to that community. Everyone I’ve spoken with nationally says Steve is a great young man and one of the top young offensive minds in the nation. We welcome Steve and his wonderful family to our community and hope they call Louisville home for a long time.” Kragthorpe takes over for Bobby Petrino, who was named the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and ended his U of L tenure with a 41-9 record.
