    Former Hokie Michael Vick, the first player picked in the 2001 NFL Draft, is scheduled to take over the starting quarterback duties for the Atlanta Falcons in 2002. Special Teams are an integral part of Hokie football and one of the units is called “Pride and Joy.” These NFL players are also a source of pride and joy due to their commitment to Virginia Tech on and off the field. Virginia Tech has recently constructed a display in the Hall of Legends in the Merryman Athletic Center to honor such former players. John Engelberger was a dominating defensive end who went from walk-on to four-year starter at Tech, to second-round NFL Draft pick, earning All-America honors and his college degree along the way. Waddy Harvey was a standout who started three seasons at defensive tackle and won the coveted Williams Award for leadership and character before joining the Buffalo Bills. Frank and Cheryl Beamer sponsored Harvey for recognition on the Pride and Joy display. Before starting an NFL career, Jim Pyne, a powerful center in the early 1990s, started 41 games and allowed just one sack in over 2,700 snaps on his way to becoming the Hokies’ first unanimous All-American. Michael Vick was an electrifying quarterback who made a lasting impact on college football while helping Virginia Tech to a national championship game and back-to-back 11-1 seasons before becoming the top NFL pick in 2001. Jim Pyne was the first player chosen overall in the NFL’s 1998 expansion draft.     Millikin in the Pros Twenty-six former Millikin University players have enjoyed professional football careers in the NFL, CFL, European and Areana football leagues. Eight of them played in the Chicago Bears organization, including six on the 1920 Staley team that was the forerunner of the present Bears franchise. Enjoying the most distinguished professional careers of the former Big Blue were Pro Football Hall of Famer George Musso and Canadian Football League Hall of Famer Virgil Wagner. Musso, a 1982 Hall of Fame inductee, played 12 seasons with the Bears (1933-44) and earned All-Pro honors at tackle and guard–the first player to be recognized at two positions. He served as Chicago's captain when the Bears were known as the "Monsters of the Midway." Wagner, who played halfback and cornerback, was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1980 following a nine-year career (1946-54) with the Montreal Alouettes. He led the CFL in scoring his first four seasons, scored a league-record 79 career touchdowns and was a five-time all-league selection. The most recent NFL signee is Michael Marker, a wide receiver who graduated in 2003. Marker, signed with the Green Bay Packers in December 2004. Eric Smith, a 1997 graduate and two-time CCIW selection at tight end, signed a two-year free agent contract with the San Diego Chargers in May 1998. Recent players Chris Katzmark, Ryan Bailey, Donnell Brown, Mike Kohl and Joe Hyland are playing or have played in European leagues. Katzmark (WR, 2007 graduate) and Bailey (DL, 2008 graduate), signed contracts with Finland's Kouvola Indians in 2008.

    Dan Hampton - Biography

    Dan Hampton - Biography Dan Hampton also known as "Danimal" was born September 19, 1957 and is a retired Hall of Fame American football defensive tackle who played twelve seasons for the Chicago Bears from 1979 to 1990 in the National Football League. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002. Previously hosted pre- and post-game shows for the Bears on WGN Radio in Chicago. College Career Hampton played college football at Arkansas and was drafted in the first round of the 1979 NFL Draft by the Bears. He was part of a Razorback team that thumped the highly favored Oklahoma Sooners in the 1978 Orange Bowl by a score of 31-6. Several key Razorback players had been suspended for the game by Arkansas Head Coach Lou Holtz which left the team short-handed. The fired up Razorbacks charged from the locker room in a fashion that the media noticed. When asked why the team came out of the locker room in such a hurry the wry Hampton answered, "Coach Holtz said the last eleven out of the locker room will start". As a senior Hampton was an All-American as he logged 98 tackles (18 behind the line of scrimmage). He was also named the Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1978. In addition, that same season, Hampton was named by the Houston Post the SWC Player of the Year.[2] As a junior he had 70 tackles (8 for a loss). In 1976, as a sophomore, Hampton made 48 tackles (2 for losses) and recovered two fumbles.

Alabama had 7 of the first 55 selections and 9 of the top 80 picks. They had 4 first round selections, though none in the top 15 picks. Michigan had the most with 11 choices, though many were late in the process Oregon did not have a player drafted for the first time in 40 years. Other highly regarded programs Penn St, Texas, Georgia and Nebraska had only 1 player drafted over the seven rounds. Power 5 conferences accounting for over 70% of all picks this year. The lower levels had 21 players chosen over 7 rounds. The highest selected non-FBS player taken this year was Ashland TE Adam Shaheen who was selected 45th overall by the Bears. Villanova DE Tanoh Kpassagnon was taken later in the 2nd round by the Chiefs.

    Drafting the Best Future NFL Quarterback Decision Making in a Complex Environment Final Project Nick Besh Steve Ellis October 18, 2004 Anyone who has followed the NFL draft knows that drafting a Quarterback in the first round is a hit or miss proposition. Successful college prospects, many who are under classmen fail to go on and have the same success as professionals. There are the “cant- miss” prospects who do go one to become Pro Bowl QB’s, but just as many are total busts. It would appear as if the selection is nothing more than a crap-shoot. Drafting is all about priorities and alternatives. Given that, there must be a way to quantify all of the stats and “gut feelings” of players to select a future NFL star. The description of the NFL draft problem would appear to be a perfect candidate for a complex ratings model using the SuperDecisions software. Analyzing the problem further lead us to our stated goal: Optimize a high selection in the NFL draft by drafting a solid contributor to your team, if not a Pro-Bowl caliber player while at the same time avoiding the selection of a player who can set your franchise back years. This is a critical decision that does not leave much room for error. To achieve our goal, thorough research of all the criteria that would need to be considered when drafting a QB would need to be analyzed. This process led us to nine top level criteria: 1 1. Strength of college experience: Just how valuable was the players experience at this level to his future success? • Sub Criteria: College (big/small), college winning percentage, college years started.
