02 Mg Divider Fronts Former Hokie Michael Vick, the first player picked in the 2001 NFL Draft, is scheduled to take over the starting quarterback duties for the Atlanta Falcons in 2002. Special Teams are an integral part of Hokie football and one of the units is called “Pride and Joy.” These NFL players are also a source of pride and joy due to their commitment to Virginia Tech on and off the field. Virginia Tech has recently constructed a display in the Hall of Legends in the Merryman Athletic Center to honor such former players. John Engelberger was a dominating defensive end who went from walk-on to four-year starter at Tech, to second-round NFL Draft pick, earning All-America honors and his college degree along the way. Waddy Harvey was a standout who started three seasons at defensive tackle and won the coveted Williams Award for leadership and character before joining the Buffalo Bills. Frank and Cheryl Beamer sponsored Harvey for recognition on the Pride and Joy display. Before starting an NFL career, Jim Pyne, a powerful center in the early 1990s, started 41 games and allowed just one sack in over 2,700 snaps on his way to becoming the Hokies’ first unanimous All-American. Michael Vick was an electrifying quarterback who made a lasting impact on college football while helping Virginia Tech to a national championship game and back-to-back 11-1 seasons before becoming the top NFL pick in 2001. Jim Pyne was the first player chosen overall in the NFL’s 1998 expansion draft. He departed Green Bay this past off- season as the fifth-ranking receiver in team annals with 417 catches. He also ranks third in career touchdown receptions with 57 (behind Don Hutson, 99, and Sterling Sharpe, 65) and fourth in 100-yard receiving games with 20. The Baltimore native teamed with Packer quarterback Brett Favre to form the most prolific active quarter- back-to-wide receiver duo in the league. The pair collaborated for 57 touchdown passes, ranking fifth in NFL history. Freeman's 56 total touchdown catches since becoming a starter in 1996 also ranked fourth in the NFL over the past six years, behind only the Vikings' Cris Carter (63), the Colts' Marvin Harrison (62) and 49ers' Terrell Owens (59). Along the way, he joined Sterling Sharpe (seven, 1988-94) as the only players in team history to have as many as six consecutive 50-reception seasons (1996-2001) and was the Packers' leading receiver for three consecutive years — 1996 (56), 1997 (81) and 1998 (a career-high 84). He also shared team honors with Bill Schroeder in 1999 with 74 catches. His 81-yard touchdown reception in Super Bowl XXXI is the longest in Super Bowl history. Statistics Games Starts Rec. Yds. Avg. • Jets Expansion Draft Plan Coming Into Focus? Signing Dano Could Be Indicator
Winnipeg Sun http://www.winnipegsun.com/2017/06/13/jets-expansion-draft-plan-coming-into-focus Jets expansion draft plan coming into focus? Signing Dano could be indicator BY KEN WIEBE, WINNIPEG SUN There are still several moving parts and a few issues left to uncover or resolve, but the expansion plans for the Winnipeg Jets are coming into focus. While it's still unclear whether the Jets asked veteran defenceman Toby Enstrom to waive his no-movement clause before Monday's deadline, you'd have to think the conversation took place. When Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff was asked directly about the topic of no-movement clauses at his year-end address, he said all options would be explored. Officially, the Jets won't be commenting on the process until after the protected lists are revealed on Sunday morning. Based on experience, one shouldn't expect too much detail to be given, even after the expansion draft picks are made public. It's a sensitive subject and one of the biggest reasons the NHL GM's didn't want the lists to be made public. Yes, it's possible the Jets could buy out the final year of Enstrom's $5.75 million contract, but that appears to be the most unlikely result. The Jets haven't bought out a player since the franchise relocated and it's hard to imagine Enstrom would be the first, especially since they still value his services when healthy. Buying him out would be both a costly proposition and leave a void on the left side of the defence depth chart.

  • Terrell Davis
Terrell Davis Running back Terrell Davis was selected in the sixth round, 196th player overall, of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. The little-known back made a big splash when earned a starting role at tailback as a rookie. He strung together four spectacular seasons before a devastating knee injury, that limited him to just 17 games over his final three seasons, prematurely ended his pro career. Davis, despite missing the final two games of his rookie campaign with a hamstring tear, eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark and also added a career-high 49 receptions for 367 yards in 1995. Davis improved his rushing total in each of the next three seasons. In his second year, he was named the Offensive Player of the Year when he ran for 1,538 yards and 13 TDs. Davis rushed for 1,750 yards and a league-high 15 TDs in 1997; and in 1998 became just the fourth runner in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. He gained 2,008 yards and again led the NFL with 21 rushing touchdowns to spark the Broncos to a 14-2 regular season record en route to Denver’s second straight Super Bowl title. Davis shined in the Broncos biggest games as evidenced by him stringing together a NFL playoff record seven straight 100-yard performances spanning the 1997 and ’98 postseasons capped by Denver winning back-to-back Super Bowls. He opened the 1997 playoffs with a 184-yard effort against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Wild Card Game followed by 101 yards versus the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional playoff and 139 yards rushing yards in the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game.

  • THE HISTORY of SMU FOOTBALL 1910S on the Morning of Sept
OUTLOOK PLAYERS COACHES OPPONENTS REVIEW RECORDS HISTORY MEDIA THE HISTORY OF SMU FOOTBALL 1910s On the morning of Sept. 14, 1915, coach Ray Morrison held his first practice, thus marking the birth of the SMU football program. Morrison came to the school in June of 1915 when he became the coach of the University’s football, basketball, baseball and track teams, as well as an instructor of mathematics. A former All-Southern quarterback at Vanderbilt, Morrison immediately installed the passing game at SMU. A local sportswriter nicknamed the team “the Parsons” because the squad was composed primarily of theology students. SMU was a member of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which ruled that neither graduate nor transfer students were eligible to play. Therefore, the first SMU team consisted entirely of freshmen. The Mustangs played their first game Oct. 10, 1915, dropping a 43-0 decision to TCU in Fort Worth. SMU bounced back in its next game, its first at home, to defeat Hendrix College, 13-2. Morrison came to be known as “the father of the forward pass” because of his use of the passing game on first and second downs instead of as a last resort. • During the 1915 season, the Mustangs posted a record of 2-5 and scored just three touchdowns while giving up 131 Ownby Stadium was built in 1926 points. SMU recorded the first shutout in school history with a 7-0 victory over Dallas University that year. • SMU finished the 1916 season 0-8-2 and suffered its worst 1920s 1930s loss ever, a 146-3 drubbing by Rice.
