Terrell Davis Terrell Davis Running back Terrell Davis was selected in the sixth round, 196th player overall, of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. The little-known back made a big splash when earned a starting role at tailback as a rookie. He strung together four spectacular seasons before a devastating knee injury, that limited him to just 17 games over his final three seasons, prematurely ended his pro career. Davis, despite missing the final two games of his rookie campaign with a hamstring tear, eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark and also added a career-high 49 receptions for 367 yards in 1995. Davis improved his rushing total in each of the next three seasons. In his second year, he was named the Offensive Player of the Year when he ran for 1,538 yards and 13 TDs. Davis rushed for 1,750 yards and a league-high 15 TDs in 1997; and in 1998 became just the fourth runner in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. He gained 2,008 yards and again led the NFL with 21 rushing touchdowns to spark the Broncos to a 14-2 regular season record en route to Denver’s second straight Super Bowl title. Davis shined in the Broncos biggest games as evidenced by him stringing together a NFL playoff record seven straight 100-yard performances spanning the 1997 and ’98 postseasons capped by Denver winning back-to-back Super Bowls. He opened the 1997 playoffs with a 184-yard effort against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Wild Card Game followed by 101 yards versus the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional playoff and 139 yards rushing yards in the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. He then earned MVP honors in Super Bowl XXXII after rushing for 157 yards and three TDs in the Broncos’ 31-24 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Davis also scored an incredible 8 rushing touchdowns in that ’97 playoff run. In the 1998 playoffs, Davis rushed for a franchise postseason-record 199 yards against the Miami Dolphins in the divisional playoff, 167 yards versus the New York Jets in the championship and capped the season with 102 yards in the Broncos’ Super Bowl XXXIII victory over the Atlanta Falcons. A three-time All-Pro selection, Davis rushed for 7,607 yards and 60 TDs in just 78 career games. He added an additional 1,280 yards on 169 career catches and four TD receptions. Davis was elected to three Pro Bowls and named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s. Former Hokie Michael Vick, the first player picked in the 2001 NFL Draft, is scheduled to take over the starting quarterback duties for the Atlanta Falcons in 2002. Special Teams are an integral part of Hokie football and one of the units is called “Pride and Joy.” These NFL players are also a source of pride and joy due to their commitment to Virginia Tech on and off the field. Virginia Tech has recently constructed a display in the Hall of Legends in the Merryman Athletic Center to honor such former players. John Engelberger was a dominating defensive end who went from walk-on to four-year starter at Tech, to second-round NFL Draft pick, earning All-America honors and his college degree along the way. Waddy Harvey was a standout who started three seasons at defensive tackle and won the coveted Williams Award for leadership and character before joining the Buffalo Bills. Frank and Cheryl Beamer sponsored Harvey for recognition on the Pride and Joy display. Before starting an NFL career, Jim Pyne, a powerful center in the early 1990s, started 41 games and allowed just one sack in over 2,700 snaps on his way to becoming the Hokies’ first unanimous All-American. Michael Vick was an electrifying quarterback who made a lasting impact on college football while helping Virginia Tech to a national championship game and back-to-back 11-1 seasons before becoming the top NFL pick in 2001. Jim Pyne was the first player chosen overall in the NFL’s 1998 expansion draft. PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2020-2021 EDITIOn Quarterback Joe Namath - Hall of fame class of 1985 nEW YORK JETS Team History The history of the New York franchise in the American Football League is the story of two distinct organizations, the Titans and the Jets. Interlocking the two in continuity is the player personnel which went with the franchise in the ownership change from Harry Wismer to a five-man group headed by David “Sonny” Werblin in February 1963. The three-year reign of Wismer, who was granted a charter AFL franchise in 1959, was fraught with controversy. The on-the-field happenings of the Titans were often overlooked, even in victory, as Wismer moved from feud to feud with the thoughtlessness of one playing Russian roulette with all chambers loaded. In spite of it all, the Titans had reasonable success on the field but they were a box office disaster. Werblin’s group purchased the bankrupt franchise for $1,000,000, changed the team name to Jets and hired Weeb Ewbank as head coach. In 1964, the Jets moved from the antiquated Polo Grounds to newly- constructed Shea Stadium, where the Jets set an AFL attendance mark of 45,665 in the season opener against the Denver Broncos. Ewbank, who had enjoyed championship success with the Baltimore Colts in the 1950s, patiently began a building program that received a major transfusion on January 2, 1965 when Werblin signed Alabama quarterback Joe Namath to a rumored $400,000 contract. The signing of the highly-regarded Namath proved to be a major factor in the eventual end of the AFL-NFL pro football war of the 1960s.

OFFENSE: RB TIKI BARBER, NEW YORK GIANTS • Facing the league’s No. 1 ranked rushing defense (69.3 yards allowed per game entering Week 6), Barber rushed for a season-high 185 yards on 26 carries (7.1 average) in the Giants’ 27-14 road victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The 185-yard performance is the fifth-highest total for Barber and the 33rd time the 10- year veteran has gone over the century mark (three times in 2006). Barber led a New York attack that amassed 259 yards on the ground against a defense that had allowed just 277 rushing yards in Atlanta’s previous four games combined. For the day, the former Virginia standout had eight runs of at least 10 yards, the highest single-game total by a player since Seattle’s SHAUN ALEXANDER accomplished the feat in 2004 (11/14/04). This season, Barber is tied with Atlanta’s MICHAEL VICK for the most 10+ yard runs in the league with 19.

Cities across the cotintry compete for the right to host this prestigious event. The reputation of such an occasion has caused an increase in demand and price for tickets, making attendance nearly impossible for the average fan. As a result, the National Football League has implemented free events for local residents and out-of-town visitors. This, along with broadcasting the game, creates an inclusive environment for all fans, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of professional sports. This paper explores the growth of the Super Bowl from a novelty game to one of the country' s most popular professional sporting events. Acknowledgements First, and foremost, I would like to thank my parents for their unending support. Thank you for allowing me to try new things and learn from my mistakes. Most importantly, thank you for believing that I have the ability to achieve anything I desire. Second, I would like to thank my brother for being an incredible role model.

  • Bill Shockley
Professional Football Researchers Association www.profootballresearchers.com Bill Shockley This article was written by Budd Bailey. It was a very short field goal – we’d call it a “chip shot” many years later. Yet it was an event that will never be forgotten, at least to football historians who keep track of such relatively obscure moments. It also turned out to be the highlight of Bill Shockley’s football career, which guaranteed him a small slice of fame for as long as the New York Jets play football. William Albert Shockley Jr. was born on March 13, 1937 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The story of his family tree is a little confusing from a distance, at least when looking at Ancestry.com. Bill Sr. was born on Sept. 26, 1912, in either Port Deposit, Maryland, or in Avondale, Pennsylvania – accounts differ. The United States census has the whole family (there were three other children) living in Port Deposit by 1920. Mother Maria Jane Day was born in Port Deposit on July 30, 1915, and it looks as if Bill Sr. and Maria were married sometime in the early 1930s.
