Pat Tillman was killed in the line of duty in April of 2004 in . The 1997 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time all- league honoree, Tillman played at ASU from 1994-97. After a successful fi ve-year NFL career with the , Tillman and his brother, Kevin, a former ASU baseball player, enlisted in the U.S. Army and became members of the elite U.S. Rangers unit.

An Academic All-American and three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection, Tillman graduated summa cum laude from ’s W.P. Carey School of Business with a B.S. in marketing on Dec. 19, 1997.

Tillman’s No. 42 jersey was retired at halftime of the Washington State game last season and Pat Tillman Sr. visited the locker room after the game. The Sun Devil team will continue to wear a patch with Tillman’s number on the front of their jerseys this season. The Pac-10 Conference has also honored Tillman by renaming its Defensive Player of the Year Award after him.

In cooperation with the family of Pat Tillman, Arizona State and the Arizona Cardinals have established the Pat Tillman Memorial Scholarship, which will provide support for ASU students in the W.P. Located in the Club south end of and completely renovated in 2003, the $28 million, 165,000-square-foot Carson Center houses the entire athletic Bill Kajikawa department and allows a student-athlete Practice Fields to accomplish everything he needs to do in a given day from meeting with an academic adviser to taping and treatment to get ready for practice without leaving the building.

The third fl oor of the Carson Center serves as headquarters for the Sun Devil football program in the Dickey Family Football Suite. The suite features offi ces for the coaches, 10 position and staff meeting rooms and the 150-seat Dutson Theater, which can house the entire football team at one time.
