BUTTERFLIES FROM THE MIDDLE EOCENE: THE EARLIEST OCCURRENCE OF FOSSIL PAPILIONOIDEA (LEPIDOPTERA) 1 Christopher J. Durden 2 and Hugh Rose 3 ABSTRACT Three fossil butterflies recently collected from the Green River Shale of Colorado extend the known range of Rhopalocera eight to ten million years back, to 48 Ma. Praepapilio Colorado n. g., n. sp., and P. gracilis n. sp. are primitive Papilionidae related to the modern Baronia brevicornis Salvin, but they require a new subfamily, Praepapilioninae. Riodinella nympha n. g., n. sp. is a primitive member of the Lycaenidae, related to modern Ancyluris, Riodina, and Rhetus, in the tribe Riodinidi. INTRODUCTION With approximately 194,000 living species, the Lepidoptera is, after the Coleoptera with some 350,000, species, the second most diverse order of organisms. It is underrepresented in the fossil record (Scudder 1875, 1891, 1892; Handlirsch 1925;Mackay 1970;Kuhne 1973; Shields 1976). -

Lasiurus ega is medium sized with relatively long ears and dull yellow/orange fur (Fig. 1). The span of its wing is approximately 35cm. Its mean body length is 11.8cm; tail length, 5.1cm; foot length, 0.90cm and forearm length 4.7cm and its mass ranges from 10-18g; however, the males are smaller in length and size than the females. They have a short body with a lateral projection of the upper lip and short, rounded ears (Fig. 2). The digits shorten from the 3rd to the 5th finger. Each female possesses 4 mammae whereas the males have a distally spiny penis (Kurta and Lehr, 1995). DISTRIBUTION. Found from the southwestern United States to northern Argentina and Uruguay; also can be found in Mexico and Central America (Fig. 3). The southern yellow bat is native to Trinidad. It has a seasonal migratory pattern in which it moves from the north to avoid the harsh/cold conditions (Encyclopedia of Life, 2016). The habitat of the southern yellow bat is forest which has a lot of wooded surroundings, foliage as well as palms. The bat is nocturnal in nature. Sometimes it inhabits thatched roofing and corn stalks that are dried, however they avoid entering mountainous areas. -

This guide includes representative species from all families encountered in the lowlands (< 400 masl), where ca. 75 species possibly occur. Namibia, 2018
Nambia and little bits of Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia, July-August 2018 Michael Kessler In 1994, my wife Elke and I did our first joint trip to Namibia, spending 3 weeks mainly in the arid western parts of the country and seeing such goodies as Brown Hyena, Caracal, Black Mongoose, Honey Badger, 3 species of sengis, and Southern African Porcupine. In 2010, we made our first family trip to Africa to KwaZulu Natal, seeing much of the large game. So now we decided to return to Namibia with the family, with the aim of exploring some new areas and searching out the less easily seen species. Time and budget limited the trip to about 2½ weeks and after some deliberation, we settled on the following sites: Sesriem + Sossusvlei for the dunes; Walvisbay for Heaviside’s Dolphin + Welwitschia; Erindi for African Wild Dog and the other game; Toko Lodge for the night drives, especially for Aardvark; Etosha only briefly for the amazing wildlife spectacle; Mahango for the Okavango specials (birds and mammals); and Victoria Falls for, well, the falls. This resulted in the following Itinerary: 25.7: Left Zurich in the evening, arriving on 26.7.: am in Jo’burg, followed by a connecting flight to Windhoek where we picked up the rental car, did some grocery shopping, and fell into our beds at Arebbusch Lodge on the southern outskirts of the city. 27.7.: Long drive to Desert Homestead Lodge at Sesriem. 28.7.: am: visit to Sossusvlei; pm: Cessna flight over the dunes, followed by a night drive back to the lodge, seeing some Bat-eared Foxes. -

The vocalisations of the Critically Endangered Seychelles sheath-tailed bat Coleura seychellensis are described. Four call types are identified : complex social calls, orientation calls within the roost, open habitat orientation calls and foraging calls. The open habitat orientation calls and foraging calls are quasi-CF, the latter having alternating frequencies. The function of the alternating calls is discussed and it is concluded that in this species the lower frequency tone is used for navigation (being identical to the open habitat orientation calls) and the higher frequency tone for prey detection in cluttered environments.
