It is with deep regret I inform you of the passing of Rear Admiral Francis Neale Smith, U.S. Naval Reserve (Retired) on 15 August 2020 at age 89. Neale joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1952, serving as a Surface Warfare Officer on active duty and the Reserves until his retirement in 1989 as the Chief of Naval Reserve (OP-095) and Commander, Naval Reserve Force. Neale graduated from Loyola College (now Loyola University,) in Baltimore in 1952 with a degree in History. He was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve on 1 September 1952. He was called up for active duty during the Korean War and reported on 22 December 1952. He then reported to the destroyer-minesweeper USS GHERARDI (DMS-30) in January 1953 as Chief Engineer, operating out of Charleston, SC for Atlantic Fleet exercises including Operation Springboard in the Caribbean and LANTMINEX. GHERARDI reverted to her original designation as DD-637 before being decommissioned on 17 December 1955, and Lieutenant (junior grade) Smith was released from active duty the same date. While pursuing a civilian career with Esso (later EXXon) he attended the University of Maryland Law School in Baltimore. Remaining in the Inactive Reserve from March 1956, he first served in Surface Division 9-19 in Danville, IL, and then Surface Division 5-1 in Baltimore, MD, where he was promoted to lieutenant in September 1956. -

Hinkson, Ph.D. ABSTRACT “The ideals and principles that have characterized Jesuit education for over 450 years are central to Georgetown’s mission and character…Students are challenged to engage in the world and become men and women in the service of others, especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the community.” This definition of Georgetown’s identity on the university’s website depicts Georgetown students’ call to service as a result of the Jesuit tradition of the university. Through exploring the question, “How did Georgetown’s involvement in the education of low-income children in Washington, DC change between 1819, with the construction of free schools run by the Visitation monastery and the Holy Trinity Parish, and 1964, with the establishment of the Georgetown University Community Action Program?” this thesis examines how the Jesuit tradition contributed to the University’s involvement in service work in the local Washington community. In this thesis I argue that the piece of Georgetown’s modern identity which encourages student engagement in the service of others finds its roots not primarily in the Jesuit tradition of the university but rather in student involvement in the social movements of the 1960s. -

CHAPTER II BISHOP DU BOURG AND THE SOCIETY OF JESUS § I. BISHOP DU BOURG Louis William Valentine Du Bourg, second Bishop of Louisiana and the Flondas, was the human agent chiefly instrumental in starting the Jesuits of the Middle United States on their way x At his invitation the charter members of that group made their first settlement in the trans-Mississippi country, from his hands they received as a gift the land which made that settlement possible, through his agency they came into possession of the property on which they built 1 he first of the colleges that were to rise under Jesuit auspices in various localities of the Middle West. By wise counsel and friendly encouragement, and, when his slender resources permitted it, by material assistance, he sought to tide the pioneer Jesuit colony over the period of distress that fol lowed its entrance into Missouri in 1823. Nor did his interest in the missionary venture he had fathered come to an abrupt end when under the pressure of painful circumstances he withdrew in 1826 from his American field of labor and retired into France As Bishop of Mon- tauban he sought with characteristic energy to enlist the aid of the court and ministry of Charles X in the work of the Society of Jesus in mid- Amenca. In fine, he wrote from France to its superior in the United States that he would not consider the well-nigh fifteen years of his residence in the Mississippi Valley to have been ill-spent though he had nothing more to show for his labors in that part of the world than the successful issue of -

MASUR An old negro, the white-washer about St. Thomas’, told me a nice story of Father Hunter. One night, it was pitch dark, two young men came from Virginia to call Father Hunter to a sick man. They were very re- spectful and spoke very little; one of them had a lantern to show the way. They entered the skiff and rowed him across; the Potomac here is about eight miles wide. After the Father had attended to the sick man, they brought him back in the same way. Now when Father Hunter had stepped ashore, he turned around to thank them, when lo and behold, men, skiff and lantern had disappeared; they were two angels.1 Tales like this are exceptionally rare. -

Journey of Faith: The Congregation of the Mission in the U.S.A. Coming to America: Origins Saint Vincent had first sent his priests to Rome as a way of having direct communicaons with the Holy See (1631). By 1659, the Vincenans were able to find a permanent residence in the Monte Citorio district of Rome. This was to be the starng point of the American Vincenan mission. In 1815, Louis William Valenne Dubourg, a Sulpician priest who had been named apostolic administrator of Louisiana (a sprawling area which had come under American rule in 1803), went to Rome to recruit priests. On his arrival in Rome, he found out that Louisiana was to be made into a diocese and that he was to be its first bishop. He resolved, however, not to accept the appointment, unless he could obtain sufficient priests. Bishop Dubourg Coming to America: Origins One evening, on returning to Monte Citorio, Dubourg heard a young Vincenan priest giving a spiritual conference to a group of clerics. So deeply impressed was the bishop-elect that he resolved to have this priest, and perhaps more of his Community, for his sparsely seled diocese. The young priest's name was Felix De Andreis. De Andreis had long wanted to serve on the foreign Felix De Andreis, C.M. missions, especially China. Dubourg spoke to the young priest and asked him to accompany him to the United States, primarily to establish a seminary in Louisiana. Two days later Dubourg had an audience with the Pope and received final approval for De Andreis and five or more other Vincenans to go to Louisiana. -

LOUIS UNIVERSITY § [ BISHOP DU BOURG's INVITATION In a letter dated May 24, 1823, exactly one week before Father Van Quickenborne and his party crossed the Mississippi and entered St. Louis for the first time, Father Rosati, at that time superior of the Lazanst seminary at the Barrens in Perry County, Missouri, wrote of the little band of Jesuits who were just then toiling along the muddy roads of southern Illinois "We are expecting them every day. The colony will be a nursery of missionaries for the Indians and perhaps in the course of time a means of procuring for the youth of these parts a solid and Christian education " x Six years later the hope entertained by Rosati that the Jesuits would take up and promote the cause of Chris tian education in the West was realized. It was felt no doubt from the beginning both by the superior of the Maryland Mission and by Bishop Du Bourg that the group of Jesuits settled at St Ferdinand were destined to exercise iheir zeal and energy before no long time in the field of education The question of a college, it is safe to say, had been among the matters discussed be tween them at the time the Missouri Mission was formally set on foot The Concordat, however, stipulates nothing in regard to education as it did in specific terms in regard to the Indian missions, though it does contain the sweeping declaration that "the Bishop of New Orleans cedes and surrenders to the Society of Jesus for ever, as soon and in proportion as its increase of members enables it to undertake the same .
