The Reading: Colossians 3:12-17 Read by Elizabeth Powell A Reading from the Book of Colossians: Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

  • Joann's Classical Christmas
JoAnn’s Classical Christmas Friday, Dec. 9 10:30am Join the BPO and the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus for a morning of Christmas Classics. Rimsky-Korsakov, Dance of the Tumblers from Snow Maiden In this piece, lively dancers are keeping themselves warm and entertained as they keep watch in the woods. You may recognize this piece, as it is a winter classic. Tchaikovsky, Pas de Deux and Valse Finale et Apotheosis from The Nutcracker, Op. 71 A Pas de Deux translates literally as “dance for two” it is a couple’s dance in- cluded in classical ballet forms. In this famous Christmas ballet, the sugar plum fairy dances with Prince Coqueluche. It showcases both the male and female dancers. As Clara waves goodbye to the land of the Nutracker, this elegant waltz plays her out, and she awakens back in her home. Bizet, "Farandole" from Suite No. 2 from L'Arlésienne From the Opera “The Girl From Arles” comes this triumphant glowing dance movement. It has gained reputation as a Christmas classic because of its incor- poration of the Three Kings Theme, from a folk song book produced in France. Schubert, Ave Maria This piece has become a Christmas standard, partly due to a misconception. In a Catholic Mass the Ave Maria is an important moment. Many people believe that Schubert wrote this theme as a setting for the Mass. Rather, it is from a song setting of the poem “The Lady of the Lake” by Sir George Scott. Here the soloist floats gracefully over the simple accompaniment. Adolphe Adam, O Holy Night The text of this next piece was originally written by French poet Placide Cappeau to celebrate the installation of an organ at his church.

  • The-John-Rutter-Christmas-Album
HIS ALBUM GATHERS TOGETHER most of the carols I have Tcomposed over the years, plus a sprinkling of my arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a programme which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story. The I have always enjoyed carols ever since I first sang them as a member of my school choir, and it was not long before I began to write carols of my own— in fact my first two published compositions, written in my teens, were the John Rutter Nativity carol and the Shepherd’s pipe carol. This was more subversive than it sounds: at the time, the only officially approved style of composition for a classically-trained music student was post-Webernian serialism, which never appealed to me much, and writing Christmas carols was an undercover way of Christmas slipping a tune or two into circulation at a time of year when music critics are generally on vacation. No one seemed to mind, so from time to time I have continued to write and arrange carols, encouraged by Sir David Willcocks, my Album senior co-editor on several volumes of the Carols for Choirs series. For any musician involved in choral music, Christmas is an especially joyous time, and I am indeed happy that it has played a part in my musical life for so many years. Reorganizing and Redesigning WPI Choral Music Library An Interactive Qualifying Project Report Submitted to the Faculty of WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science By Qiaochu Han Zhengyuan Lv Kexin Shi Bolin Zhu Date: 20 February 2012 Report Submitted to: Professor John F. Delorey This report represents work of WPI undergraduate students submitted to the faculty as evidence of a degree requirement. WPI routinely publishes these reports on its web site without editorial or peer review. For more information about the projects program at WPI, see http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Projects Abstract This project reorganized Worcester Polytechnic Institute choral music library and redesigned some more efficient ways of sorting data for the library online website. By moving and rearranging all the boxed music pieces in increasing numbers, the WPI choral music library was organized and cleaned. By checking and correcting the excel data from previous years, a more accurate choral music library database was created. Concerns and future recommendations for potential IQP teams are included in this report along with a copy of the updated library data as appendix. Acknowledgements We would like to acknowledge our project advisor for giving us the opportunity to work with WPI Choral Music Library and his support and guidance throughout the project.
