ABSTRACT Several �-alkyl-�-(N,N-dialkylamino)carbodiimides, which were found to form dimeric species, were prepared, and the structure of the dimeric species determined. A study of the reaction chemistry of both the monomeric and dimeric carbodiimides led to the conclusion that dimerization occurred via a (-n-2s + r2a) ground-state, symmetry-allowed mechanism, and hat thermal decomposition of the dimeric species occurred via a (-,,.,2s +-ir-2s) excited-state, symmetry-allowed mechanism. Although dialkylphosphoramidates have been shown to be useful intermediates in the preparation of unsaturated organic nitrogen compounds, N-acyl- and N-imino-dialkylphosphorohydrazidates were found to be too 1¥1,stable, forming trialkylphosphates upon distillation, to be of any synthetic value. The preparation of several difunctional and bis-carbodiimides was attempted, but no products were isolated. Based on the side reaction products isolated from the reaction mixtures, it was concluded that the desired carbodiimides did form, but that they were too unstable to be isolated under the reaction conditions used. INTO THE UNKNOWN 7-1 THE ELECTRON DENSITY Now we are ready to look at lowest level of engineering structure—the level at which everything else is determined—the relation between the structure of the electron density and properties. The electrons are the worker bees, making circuits about the hive. If the beekeeper moves the hive a bit, the circling bees simply move along with the hive—their motion is fast compared to that of the hive. But how fast? Hafez, Harald Wack, Brandon Young, Dana Ferraris, and Thomas Lectka* Contribution from the Department of Chemistry, Johns Hopkins UniVersity, 3400 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21218 Received February 5, 2002 Abstract: We report practical methodology for the catalytic, asymmetric synthesis of â-lactams resulting from the development of a catalyzed reaction of ketenes (or their derived zwitterionic enolates) and imines. The products of these asymmetric reactions can serve as precursors to a number of enzyme inhibitors and drug candidates as well as valuable synthetic intermediates. We present a detailed study of the mechanism of the â-lactam forming reaction with proton sponge as the stoichiometric base, including kinetics and isotopic labeling studies. Stereochemical models based on molecular mechanics (MM) calculations are also presented to account for the observed stereoregular sense of induction in our reactions and to provide a guidepost for the design of other catalyst systems. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.
