The 10th Otley Beer Festival is scheduled to take place on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th November, from noon until 11pm each day.

Following closure of the Civic Centre, the organisers of the beer festival (known collectively as Otley RATS) were still keen for the event to continue and are pleased to announce that, thanks to the enthusiasm of its Committee, the venue will be Otley Rugby Club – only a short distance from the Civic Centre.

The Otley Beer Festival is organised on behalf of Otley Parish Church (hence the logo) and raises monies for various local charities as well as the upkeep of the church building. To date over £37,500 has been handed over.

Once again we look forward to an event which brings together Otley folk and peo - ple from much further afield for a truly friendly and happy occasion.

Over 60 real ales from around Yorkshire together with real cider and perry and a global bottle bar will be available and these should provide a diverse array of styles, strengths, flavours, aromas and colours to suit all tastes. Food will also be available at certain times.

Although no stage is available this year, it is hoped that some form of live musical entertainment will be available from time to time. Competition Entry costs only £5 and for this you will receive a programme listing and de - scribing the beers, a souvenir glass and £2.50 of beer tokens . Envision Regional Manager, Katherine Myles, said “We are really excited to build on what has been an extraor - dinary first year of working with young people in Otley, and to see what important community projects they will take on for 2010/11”. Last year with the help and support of Envision, the stu - dents researched and developed a series of workshops designed to raise awareness of racism and provide younger students with strategies to tackle it. Through delivering these workshops to the whole of year 7, stu - dents developed their own communication and project management skills, as well as their knowledge of social issues. If you’re keen to work with young people, care about social and environmental issues in your local area and can spare 2 hours per week, we are currently on the lookout for enthusiastic local volunteers willing to work with 16-19 year olds in schools and colleges to develop their skills, confidence and potential, whilst at the same time, helping them to make a difference in their local communities. Otley is now well-established as a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town. Shops and businesses display the logo, the town council supports the scheme, and the paths and trails around the town are well-walked. Otley residents are taking to their feet in greater numbers, and visitors are coming from far and wide to enjoy our superb local landscapes. One of the first projects undertaken by the Walkers are Welcome team was the production of a guide to four walks, all starting from the Jubilee clock in the Market Place. The guide has sold well, and the paths, which are all waymarked, are introducing people to the fine country on their doorsteps. The guide, Otley:four walks is available, at £1, from shops in town. The next project was to open up a trail from the Jubilee Clock, northwards, right across the Area of Outsanding Natural Beauty, for 38 miles, to end at , in . The new trail – ‘The Six Dales Trail’ – was launched at this year’s Otley walking festival, and is proving a great success. A guide is on sale in Otley shops. What next? Another long-distance trail? Another set of local walks? Improving access for disabled people? There is plenty to be done. Find out more at the Walkers are Welcome website; waw-otley.org.uk .
