For the fourth year running, this year's Street Festival is due to be the biggest and best yet, fun packed for all the family with absolutely something for everyone. This festival has grown from year to year, featuring the best young musical talent that Otley has to offer, an increase in variety of street performers and exciting new fun attractions, such as the inflatable climbing wall.

The festival originated four years ago in a very small and intimate way as a 'thank you' from the retailers on Newmarket who felt that they wanted to give something back to the community. From then its grown year on year taking on a much wider and greater aspect.

The Otley Street festival Organisation has a dual aim, to raise the awareness of Otley as a unique market town being a fantastic place to visit aiding tourism with the spin- off of helping local business but has now also become a beacon for young local talent within our community, giving young bands possibly their first taste of performing on a stage to such a large audience.

The line- up is great this year, we have eleven bands on stage this year, the Rough and Ready Boys being the head liners, along with Reel Jiggy, Joe Gallaghar, Curfew, Little Wolfe, AKA, Insomnia, Mechanical Eddie, Malorie Green, Musical Fusion starting at 1 pm and going on until 10.00pm, plus solo artists and buskers. There will be a lot of rock n rolling going on with the Jolly Jivers, on Newmarket again, from 12 onwards and back again by popular demand, our beautiful belly dancers ...... Our great Punch & Judy guy is coming back again this year along with the all- time favorite bouncy Competition castle, the new inflatable climbing wall, stilt walkers, face painter, unicyclist/ Juggler and living statue.- there'll be so much to do - so little time!! and of course the shops will be open. PRIZE In 2010 we had the support of Otley Town Council and have been lucky enough to gain their The winner will receive a hamper of financial support again this year and due to the success of last year we have also gained the goodies celebrating 4 years of the support of; Leeds City Council, Otley Town Partnership, Otley Lions, Otley Community Council and Street Festival Otley Chamber of Trade. Otley’s own Queen of mint imperials, proprietor Dianne Broadbent, reigns over her Empire of Poor Bens, pineapple chunks and acid drops and another 300 or so jars of sweets that stand floor to ceiling and line the walls of her sugary palace in Newmarket.

Kept next to her antique till, Diane’s visitor book is signed by delighted customers from far flung parts of the globe such as Ontario, Sydney, Japan and Dishforth, all eager to lose themselves down a memory lane paved with cinder toffee and humbugs. Many of the Emmerdale cast regularly call in for a quarter of one of the two dozen varieties of liquorice always in stock.

A regular subject for university photography students, Dianne is happy to oblige in the hope that one day her thriving emporium would ap - pear in a magazine and this became so in the pages of February 2011’s edition of Vogue. ROYAL ELEPHANTS IN THE GARDEN

FIRE RISK DURING DRY WEATHER

The recent number of moor fires occurring in West Yorkshire has sparked concern within the local Fire and Rescue Service. Nigel Atkins, Station Commander covering Otley, Rawdon and Cookridge fire stations is issuing warnings in order to try and reduce the number of calls to fires in the open. THE EUROPEAN YEAR OF He said, "Our concern is that if we continue with the current spell of dry weather there will be an upturn in calls to fires involving moor land, hedgerows and the open countryside. Otley had slipped up in two previous Cups, being unlucky in the league cup to lose 2-1 after & DISTRICT having led for 89 minutes against Boroughbridge two weeks ago, and having also been defeated 2-1 by Bay Athletic in the Final of the County Challenge Cup the week before. CHALLENGE CUP FINAL However, Otley dominated the first half, and lead 2-0 at half-time through superbly taken goals by Scott Cater and Josh Waite, and then added a third 3 minutes into second half through an Otley Town 3 Ilkley FC 2 excellent move by Luke Danskin. Ilkley scored in the 78th and Otley were then under pressure for the remainder of the game, when Ilkley got another consolation goal with three minutes left. Otley entered into this game on the back of losing two recent cup finals, Man of the Match Scott Cater for Otley but it must have been a hard decision for the adjudicator and it was make or break to get some silverwear for the season when they as Jamie Simms, Ben Greenhow and Luke Danskin were also superb on the night. met local rivals Ilkley FC in the final of the Wharfedale & District FA cup . Otley still have three games left to play.

Otley Town have had a very good season, much improved on last season for the first team, which reached an unprecedented 3 cup finals.the Sunday team newly promoted and progressing well in the Wharfedale Triangle Premier League. The Reserves in the Harrogate Premier, and the Acad - emy team, every team finishing with much improved league positions, but we as a club now need to progress from here and the current management are keen to encourage improvements at all levels – players and facilities.

We are very grateful to Otley Town Council who very kindly funded the transportation to the County Cup Final. It is excellent news that they too have recognised the importance of the local football club and the facility that it offers to the youth community of Otley and surrounding parts.

We run some 16 teams down at Town, from under 7’s upwards but we need help; whether that be individual teams (Under 12’s and 15’s come to mind). There are many facets to running the Club and providing the facilities and quality pitches that many take for granted; such as: the bar after the games on a Saturday, cutting the grass, tidying/painting the barriers, maintaining the club - house and other bits like the car park (needs surfacing). Believe me setting up 10 pitches and all the stalls (tea bar, sweet stall, Barbeque et al) is not easy - so if you can help this progressive club in ANY way then please get in touch. We also hope to run a girls team (under 18) in addition to all the other junior teams, who also need your help and support. Under 14's boys need new recruits.

National Adventure Event Comes To Otley

One of the country’s top adventure events for young people is being held in Otley this Autumn. The national Apex Challenge competition will be taking place in the Otley Chevin area, involving around four hundred teenagers from across the UK. The event, which will be based at the Bramhope Scout Campsite, is taking place on the weekend of 30th September – 1st October and will use large parts of the Otley Chevin area. Teams of Explorer and Network Scouts from across the country will be taking part, including several teams from Otley’s own Scout groups. The adventure competition will involve teams climbing, abseiling, mountain biking and tackling tough ropes courses as they race to gather points during both days. The Apex Challenge has been around for ten years and has held events across the North of England, but this is the first time the adventure competition has come to Otley. Event Organiser Matt Richards says Otley looks like being a perfect area for the event. “The mix of crags, woodland and open space makes this area perfect for these high-energy adventure events. We’ve had tremendous support from the Otley community in helping to plan the event and look forward to hosting a great weekend for these young people from across the UK.” “You may find The Chevin is a little busier than usual on this weekend, but please feel free to come and see what we’re up to. Any of our volunteers will be happy to chat to you about the event, and how you could get involved with the adventure of Scouting.” For more information, see the event’s website at www.apexchallenge.co.uk or to join the Scouting adventure, see www.scouts.org.uk
