B U L L E T I N B U L L E T I N Making sport and recreation a part of everyday life July 2010 . Issue 25 Coalition government announces sporting intentions I wrote last time about my optimism for the football World Cup and the Go to… potential of a British winner at Wimbledon. In the intervening time the coalition government has announced its austerity budget, including a number of cuts Coalition Government policies which will directly impact on sport and physical activity. On the face of it, Sports Awards optimism should be the farthest from our minds just now. However, there have also been a number of announcements beginning to set out the coalition 5 Hour Offer Survey stance on sport, which includes a desire to create a genuine and lasting Inspire Mark sporting legacy, with a focus on facilities and community level sport. An Playground to Podium additional £50 million is estimated to be directed to sport by 2012 as a result of lottery reform, and there will be an annual Olympic style school event with Club Support Programme increased competitive sport both within and between schools. Get Active Cornwall While we lament the lack of a national champion to cheer from either of the Connecting Cornwall: 2030 summer’s top sporting events, the potential for recent announcements to BCS Championships reinvigorate grass roots sport at a school / community level and the proximity St Austell Swim Fest of 2012, is reason to believe that sport and physical activity at a local level remains important. We should not forget that over the past three years Sports volunteering funding participation in sport has been steadily increasing in Cornwall. If the recent More Cornish kids doing sport announcements assist even more people to be active in sport and physical activity this will be good news. Vetting & Barring Scheme Calum Giles The recent budget reports, mean that we have lost the additional funding we School Sports Competition received last year from the Department of Health to develop physical activity alongside sport. We are looking to integrate as much of the additional Cornwall Rugby League physical activity work as possible into our ongoing business. We have always Pedometer Challenge believed that sport and physical activity are closely aligned and we will continue to promote them side by side, working with our partners to get more Let’s Dance with Change4Life people active through both sport and physical activity. Future Jobs Fund Free disability surf lessons Adapting to a changing environment is always challenging and I am sure that recent announcements will affect us all in many ways. There will of course be Cornwall Festival of Cycling further tough announcements in the October spending review, but we know Latest Active People data the value of sport and physical activity and its ability to change lives; not only should we never forget that, but perhaps now is a time to make sure that others are equally aware of the very many values and benefits of sport and Dates for your diary physical activity. In your lunch break Stop Press: Last Friday I had the good fortune to be in an audience of 100 people when the Prime Minister David Cameron, brought his PM Direct Useful links Question & Answer session to Cornwall. This was an impressive session, of questions and direct answers. I took away several clear messages: the need for tough choices; targeting bureaucracy; and a belief that Cornwall should have a greater say in how it governs itself. Best wishes, Mike Thomas Strategic Director Coalition Government policies for sport & physical activity Amongst the rash of announcements about cost savings and policy announcements in recent weeks there are a number which directly impact on sport and physical activity. In summary, there is a commitment to: Support major sporting events Support Olympic and Paralympic games in London 2012 Create genuine and lasting legacy with a stronger focus on facilities and sport at a community level Create annual Olympic – style school sport events Protect school playing fields Lottery reform will increase sport’s share of lottery and result in an estimated £50 million increase of funding to sport by 2012 School sport will see a renewed emphasis on competition both within and between schools A Major Sports Events Bill designed to make it easier to win and host major events Promotion of cycling and walking In contrast, there have been some direct funding cuts: Cancellation of the £55 billion Building Schools for the Future Programme, which would have included substantial new school and community sports facilities Cancellation of the free swimming initiative Cancellation of additional funds from the Department of Health to County Sports Partnerships for the development of physical activity alongside sport 2010 Cornwall Sports Awards We are now inviting nominations for the 2010 Cornwall Sports Awards which will be staged at the Esplanade Hotel in Newquay on Friday 12th November. This prestigious event, staged for the first time in 2006, has been designed to recognise and honour the contributions made by dedicated sports Coaches, Officials, Clubs, Volunteers and Young Leaders from across the county. There are four categories, incorporating 13 separate Awards; Coaching, Club, Volunteering, and Sport Unlimited. Click here for further information and details of how to nominate 6,500 young people complete first ever sport and physical activity survey 6,500 young people from all over Cornwall completed the first ever survey to see how physically active they are within school and their community; this is the largest cohort of any young person survey in the county. So far, several interesting trends have been identified and it is clear that the methodology (student self-response) will enable us to question and challenge many perceived wisdoms, for example: 22.8% of students in Cornwall reported doing less than the recommended 2 hours of school based sport per week 49.5% of students reported doing less than 2 hours of community based sport per week 62.3% of students want to do more sports activities 63.6% of students recently visited a leisure centre When looking at barriers to participation 72.9% of students say their school doesn’t offer interesting activities for them to do, and 72.1% say that cost prohibits them from taking part more in community sport activities. Further analysis is taking place with the aim to repeat the survey annually to challenge and improve provision of sport and physical activity for young people. For further information on this survey please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. Can you link a project to the London 2012 Games and get the coveted Inspire Mark? Last month the big green button was pressed and Cornwall’s dedicated website for physical activity went live. At the moment we’re busily promoting the site to activity providers and fitness professionals to upload their organisation’s details for free and become a part of Cornwall’s first searchable activity database. Making sure that the database is as useful as possible we’re currently only showing a scaled down version search but will be launching the real deal in the next couple of months… so watch this space! With intellectual reporting methods integrated into the backend of the site, we’re hoping that by as soon as September we’ll have a great insight into what’s out there and what’s missing.

Environment Agency West Cornwall Catchment Flood Management Plan - December 2008 Foreword I am pleased to introduce the West Cornwall Catchment Flood Management Plan. Past flood events remind us of the hardship that flooding can cause, especially in the built environment. They also reveal the challenges we face when confronted by the forces of nature. This plan will allow us to use a scientific approach to understand and describe how the catchment behaves and what the most sustainable flood risk management policies may be over the next 50 to 100 years. We can then use this direction to plan the most acceptable ways of managing flood risk for the long-term. We will use the catchment flood management plan to steer our future investment in flood risk management. We hope that our public and private partners will find it useful in their decision making, especially where it can guide the planning of land use.
