B U L L E T I N B U L L E T I N Making sport and recreation a part of everyday life November 2008 . Issue 15 Dear all, Go to… A new look to the bulletin this time around, thanks to Jenna Palmer Cornwall Sports Awards the Partnership’s newish marketing and communications expert… We hope you like the new layout. BBC Unsung Heroes The annual Cornwall Sports Awards held recently are a real highlight CSP Team Day in the calendar. Recognising the efforts and expertise that goes into sport in the county is a real reminder of how valuable sport is, not just Website redesign because we enjoy it, but for all the other benefits it brings, including health and social interaction. The sports awards were a super Sport Unlimited celebration of sport. You can read more below. Cornwall Corporate Games Recognising the value of sport, getting more people taking part and ensuring that the benefits can be felt widely is of course the World Leisure Innovation cornerstone of the work of the partnership. We hope that with the Prize change to unitary status for the councils of Cornwall and the new Sport England strategy that the value of sport will continue to be The Wii is back! recognised, and occasions like the sports awards can grow, as a celebration of this great activity we all enjoy called sport. Disability Sports Focus Enjoy your sport and stay active, Sports Board In your lunch break Dates for your diary Mike Thomas Useful links Strategic Director 2008 Cornwall Sports Awards Friday 7 November saw us celebrate and pay tribute to Cornwall’s unsung sports volunteers at the 2008 Cornwall Sports Awards. Held at Tregenna Castle in St Ives, the event was a glittering success and let us formally thank all those who have dedicated their time and efforts to supporting our strong sport community. ITV Westcountry sports presenter, Mark Tyler entertained the audience as compare. And, we were also joined by Olympic Gold medal rower Ed Coode MBE, Olympic runner Jemma Simpson and Paralympic Bronze medal swimmer Matthew Whorwood. All of whom gave fascinating speeches and offered a peek into the life and training of Olympians and Paralympians. Also, Jemma Simpson presented Tony Lett, of Cornwall Athletics Club, with a prestigious England Athletics’ Gold Award which he recently won at a national level for his services to coaching. And, the Cornish swimmers who competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics were presented with special awards by the Cornwall Amateur Swimming Association. Click here for a full list of the winners and more about the event Back to Top BBC Unsung Heroes Cornwall has a shot at being represented at the 2008 BBC Sports Personality of the Year! The BBC has announced their top six Sports Unsung Heroes from the South West, one of whom will win the award and go forward to represent the region in the same category nationally at the 2008 BBC Sports Personality of the Year in December. And, we’re delighted to tell you that three of the six are from Cornwall. Asking the public to make nominations for the title earlier in the year, the judging panel received an outstanding number of nominations, showing just how remarkable the quality of volunteering is in the South West. But, as difficult as the decision process was, the six top finalists were named and will be featured on BBC Spotlight, as follows: Barry Bartlett, Equestrianism in Guernsey Tuesday 18 November Chris Goninan, St Just Cricket Club Wednesday 19 November Ian Baker, Torpoint Athletic Youth FC Thursday 20 November Yvonne Cole, South Devon Sports Assoc for the Disabled Tuesday 25 November Graham Skinner, ISCA Hockey Club Wednesday 26 November Adam Sibley, Liskeard Junior FC Thursday 27 November The overall winner will be announced at the beginning of December so make sure to tune in! Click here for further details of the BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award Back to Top CSP Team Day Last month we learnt our parries from our ripostes and our lunges from our en-gardes during our quarterly Team Day, when we turned our hand (and foil) to fencing. Spending the morning discussing recent developments, brainstorming new ideas for projects and presenting status reports, we were then put through our paces by Truro Fencing Club in the afternoon. Just who cut the mustard?... Taking joint first place in the CSP Tournament were Rob and Chris. Back to Top Website redesign Keep an eye on our website over the next few months as we’re currently working with our web designers to refresh the design of our present site. As well as improving the look of the site, we’re hoping to develop various areas to achieve a much more engaging, community-focussed site. If there is anything you feel could be improved or added to the site, please contact Jenna Back to Top Sport Unlimited Kicking off at the beginning of the autumn term was the new initiative to support the 5 hour offer, Sport Unlimited. We have 19 projects taking place around Cornwall, offering discounted or free taster sessions of a variety of different activities. Earlier this month we visited Teenspiration, a street-dance fitness class based at Polkyth Leisure Centre, to see how successful it’s been and so far so very good. The retention figures so far have been very promising, there’s been a marked improvement in performance and, most of all, the group really enjoy the class and are looking to continue with it when the Sport Unlimited taster period finishes. In the next bulletin we’ll be able to give you a more detailed breakdown of how successful the programme has worked countywide. Click here to read more about the Sport Unlimited scheme Back to top Cornwall Corporate Games Next week we’re heading up to Peterborough for a meeting with the Corporate Games organisers to discuss the arrangements for next year’s event. So, watch this space as we’re hoping to commence with planning as soon as we return to ensure that the 2009 Cornwall Corporate Games are much bigger and better! Winning the Over 50s tennis tournament at the Cornwall Corporate Games, Frank Towning of Newquay Sports Centre, was invited to play at the London Games at the end of September. However, with there not being an Over 50s section, he played in the Over 40s… and came second! We’re sure you’ll join us in congratulating Frank, and we look forward to seeing him compete next year in the 2009 Games. Back to Top Caradon win World Leisure Innovation Prize We’re delighted to report that Caradon District Council has been awarded a World Leisure Innovation Prize for a project they have jointly delivered alongside Ginsters. Encouraging staff to lead healthier lifestyles, the pioneering project was greatly praised for changing Ginsters’ employees’ behavioural patterns. Last month Jane Abraham from Caradon DC was fortunate enough to attend the award ceremony in Quebec, Canada. Click here to read more about the World Leisure Innovation Prize and for details of the project Back to Top The Wii is back! After last year’s success with taking a Nintendo wii into the community, we’re dusting it off and taking it out again. And, in collaboration with the Women’s Institute, we’re holding a competition for up to 24 ladies at the county’s WI headquarters in Threemilestone. The event, on Wednesday 26 November, will involve the usual sports games as well as the wii fit, which ties in perfectly with the WI’s active program of events, designed for members to be more involved in new and fun physical activities. The day is expected to include fierce competition for the title of wii champion as well as lots of active fun and frolics. If you know of anyone or a group above the age of 45 who you think might be interested in starting some physical activity using the wii or wii fit, please encourage them to get in touch. Back to Top Disability Sports Focus Following the hugely successful Paralympic Handover in September, and having now had our Disability Officer Steve Hillman in post for eight months, we thought we’d give you a bit more insight into the fantastic progress being made with disability sport in Cornwall. Last month Steve delivered a Multi-Sports event at Brannel School in St Stephen. With judo, boccia, basketball, table tennis and fencing on the programme, the day went brilliantly and smiles were also big on the agenda! Further Multi-Sports Events are currently being organised and Steve is also delivering the Sports Leaders Inclusion Certificate to eight Gifted & Talented students at Doubletrees School in St Blazey, so that they can sustain a lunch time and after school games club for younger pupils. This is a pilot programme and will hopefully be replicated across the county soon. He’s been working with the British Surf Association to develop opportunities for people with disabilities and you can frequently find him delivering activity sessions at Falmouth and Newquay Age Concern. Collaborating with the School Sports Partnerships, he is also working on the ‘Playground to Podium’ project, planning events and activities for a disability sports competition. Watch this space for further developments! Back to Top Sports Board Meeting held on 21st October 2008 A new face and a departure to report. We have welcomed David Parr to the Board and he has a background in policy development, project management and environmental regulation. Having been an archer and a cyclist, David is now heavily involved with the national governing body of sport for Bowls.

B U L L E T I N Making sport and recreation a part of everyday life July 2010 . Issue 25 Coalition government announces sporting intentions I wrote last time about my optimism for the football World Cup and the Go to… potential of a British winner at Wimbledon. In the intervening time the coalition government has announced its austerity budget, including a number of cuts Coalition Government policies which will directly impact on sport and physical activity. On the face of it, Sports Awards optimism should be the farthest from our minds just now. However, there have also been a number of announcements beginning to set out the coalition 5 Hour Offer Survey stance on sport, which includes a desire to create a genuine and lasting Inspire Mark sporting legacy, with a focus on facilities and community level sport. An Playground to Podium additional £50 million is estimated to be directed to sport by 2012 as a result of lottery reform, and there will be an annual Olympic style school event with Club Support Programme increased competitive sport both within and between schools. Get Active Cornwall While we lament the lack of a national champion to cheer from either of the Connecting Cornwall: 2030 summer’s top sporting events, the potential for recent announcements to BCS Championships reinvigorate grass roots sport at a school / community level and the proximity St Austell Swim Fest of 2012, is reason to believe that sport and physical activity at a local level remains important. We should not forget that over the past three years Sports volunteering funding participation in sport has been steadily increasing in Cornwall.

West Cornwall Catchment Flood Management Plan December 2008 Environment Agency West Cornwall Catchment Flood Management Plan - December 2008 We are the Environment Agency. It’s our job to look after your environment and make it a better place – for you, and for future generations. Your environment is the air you breathe, the water you drink and the ground you walk on. Working with business, Government and society as a whole, we are making your environment cleaner and healthier. The Environment Agency. Out there, making your environment a better place. This document may be reproduced with prior permission of the Environment Agency. Environment Agency West Cornwall Catchment Flood Management Plan - December 2008 Foreword I am pleased to introduce the West Cornwall Catchment Flood Management Plan. Past flood events remind us of the hardship that flooding can cause, especially in the built environment. They also reveal the challenges we face when confronted by the forces of nature. This plan will allow us to use a scientific approach to understand and describe how the catchment behaves and what the most sustainable flood risk management policies may be over the next 50 to 100 years. We can then use this direction to plan the most acceptable ways of managing flood risk for the long-term. We will use the catchment flood management plan to steer our future investment in flood risk management. We hope that our public and private partners will find it useful in their decision making, especially where it can guide the planning of land use.
