Jason Throop, Co-Chair This dissertation is based on the accounts of four Syrian refugee children who now live in the Bay Ridge area of Brooklyn. It focuses on the children’s narratives of their treacherous flight out of Syria into refugee camps in Jordan and Turkey, their accounts of their daily lives in the Bay Ridge area, and their views about the future. Each child has had similar experiences, coping with the tragic loss of family members and friends during the Syrian Civil War. Through their journeys the loss of the other destabilizes the self, forming a mode of being-with-other that allows the dead the possibility of “living-after.” It opens the children to being responsible for the ii wellbeing of the dead other, shaping the children’s narratives as a response to the non-responsive other. For the children, the dead other stimulates a way of being-in-the world that is constantly (re)orienting their moral experiences. The dead other becomes an open-ended engagement. This intersubjective relationship to the dead other is examined through Islamic ethics and Sūfī ideals the children have been socialized into and have learned to uphold. The dissertations focuses on Islamic philosopher al-Ghazālī’s concept of “happiness” and philosopher Ibn ‘Arabī’s notion of barzakh (“obstacle” or “separation”), the in-between space of “the world of imagination.” These concepts emphasize Islamic and Sūfī ideals as lived experiences for the children, informing individual virtues as a set of characteristic patterns of knowledge, rationality, motivation and action. The significance in examining Islamic ethics and Sūfī ideals in relation to the children’s lifeworlds is the understanding of ethics as a relationship between moral norms and unpredictable situations. These situations of unpredictability, exemplified through the openness towards the dead other, are a form of being and becoming for the children shaped through their dynamic (re)interpretation of the past and the unpredictability of the future. iii The dissertation of Farzad Amoozegar-Fassaie is approved. Masking, maintaining physical distancing, daily health screenings, over 1,000 COVID tests, and additional outdoor dining spaces were among the protocols Chatham enacted to help keep its community safe from the coronavirus (for a full list of coronavirus precautions and updates, visit our Fall Return to Campus site at chatham.edu/fall2020). Our students, faculty, and staff showed remarkable resilience in rising to the challenge, though— adapting activities, events, and traditions to be safe for themselves and their peers. Events were held virtually and in person, including a week of action for racial justice, a ton of election week support events, and even a Food in Uncertain Times virtual conference hosted by the Center for Regional Agriculture, Food, and Transformation (CRAFT).     SHIFTING GEARS: HTS’S EVOLVING USE OF SVBIEDS DURING THE IDLIB OFFENSIVE OF 2019-20 HUGO KAAMAN OCTOBER 2020 POLICY PAPER CONTENTS SUMMARY Since May 2019, a series of Syrian loyalist offensives backed by the Russian * 1 BACKGROUND air force has gradually encroached upon the country’s northwestern Idlib Province, home to the last major pocket of opposition-held territory. As the chief rebel group in control of Idlib, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) has * 5 THE 2019 OFFENSIVE employed dozens of suicide car bombs as part of its continued defense of the area. Formally known as suicide vehicle-born improvised explosive devices (SVBIEDs), these weapons have been a cornerstone of the group’s * 13 DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF TACTICS, TECHNIQUES, — and by extension, the entire opposition’s — military strategy since early stages of the war, when rebel forces began capturing and holding territory. AND PROCEDURES In an attempt to further understand this strategy and how it has evolved over time, this case study seeks to compare and contrast HTS’s past and current use of SVBIEDs, with a heavy focus on the latter. Death in childbirth because relentless bombing blocks access to clinics. Death from diabetes and kidney disease because medicines to treat chronic illnesses ran out months ago. Death from trauma because snipers stand between injured children and functioning hospitals. And – everywhere – slow, painful death by starvation. This is what one million besieged people – trapped mostly by their own government – face every day in Syria. At the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP), Busan, South Korea held in August 2011, the Working Group brought together faith-based MSM in Asia and the Pacific, with a range of key experts, to discuss faith, sexual diversity, impact on stigma and discrimination, and access to health, and to formulate strategies.
