Joker (2019 Film) - Wikipedia
Joker (2019 film) - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_(2019_film) Joker (2019 film) Joker is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed by Todd Joker Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Theatrical release poster Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. It is the first live-action Directed by Todd Phillips theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Produced by Todd Phillips Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content. -
His Brothers' Keeper
His Brothers’ Keeper Lawyer Gregory Stanton refuses to let the world ignore the genocide of two million Kampucheans. This is the story of their tragedy and his dedication. By Michael Matza There is a compelling sense of mission about 35-year-old Gregory Howard Stanton, a 1982 graduate of Yale Law School. This past April, Stanton launched a one- man effort he calls the Kampuchean Genocide Project, through which he hopes to raise $300,000 to send researchers and scientists to Southeast Asia to gather evidence that would document—precisely and for posterity—the crimes of the Pol Pot government in Democratic Kampuchea (Cambodia) from April 1975 through the end of 1978. Although it was thrown out of power by a Vietnamese-backed invasion in 1979, the government that was named for Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot still represents Kampuchea as part of a united front in the United Nations. That it does so belies a past that survivors of Khmer Rouge brutalities remember with dread. In the three and a half years that it was in power, the Pol Pot regime is said to have intentionally murdered at least one million Kampucheans and to have imposed conditions of slave labor, starvation, and forced evacuations that resulted in the deaths of more than one million others. In a country of approximately eight million people, one quarter of the population was systematically exterminated through a maniacal program that seemed like the Final Solution writ small. For Greg Stanton, such mind-boggling carnage imposes a personal obligation. “There are people who can become numb to the killing. -

They came together to do what people do at reunions - to renew old friendships, to reminisce, to laugh, to look at old photos of them selves when they were younger, to sing "inside" songs, to get dressed up for a reception and to have a banquet with a speaker. In this case, the speaker was General William Westmoreland, and before the banquet, in the afternoon, the group had gone to Arlington National Cemetery to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They represented 1,600 women who had served (some in the 50's, some in the 60's and some in the 70's) in an American Red Cross program which provided recreation for U.S. servicemen on duty in Europe, Korea and Vietnam. It was named Supplemental Recreational Activities Overseas (SRAO). In Europe it was known as the Red Cross center program. In Korea and Vietnam it was Red Cross clubmobile service. -

From Zero to My Own Hero: An Intersectional Feminist Analysis of the Woman Superhero’s Challenge to Humanity in Watchmen and Jessica Jones Louise Stenbak Simonsen & Sabina Kox Thorsen 10th semester, MA Dissertation Engelsk Almen, Aalborg University Supervisor: Mia Rendix 02-06-2020 Characters: 317649 Simonsen & Thorsen 1 Abstract The image of women in the superhero genre has for many years been dominated by how it is produced as a mirror to the masculine. However, this image is now beginning to be disrupted by feminist attempts at diversifying representations. This paper aims to examine Watchmen and the first season of Jessica Jones as cultural representations and new voices of women which materialise the category as a transgressive, challenging force to assumedly fixed structures of gender, race and sexuality. As Jessica Jones speaks from a White feminist perspective, and Watchmen from a Black feminist perspective, we explore how the texts can be combined to expand the category of women. The texts show the discourses, regimes of truth, and forms of violence which seek to regulate women, and in exposing these tools of domination, the texts disrupt the fixed categories and definitions of women and question the limits of performativity. In spite of women being shown to be materialised beyond the phallogocentric economy of signification, the two series still limit gender to a biological determinism that assumes a normativity of social structures and relations of power. However, because the texts are voices of women, they are the first step of many towards a multitude of untold, endless possibilities of gender and racial representation. -

K-Pop in Latin America: Transcultural Fandom and Digital Mediation
International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 2250–2269 1932–8036/20170005 K-Pop in Latin America: Transcultural Fandom and Digital Mediation BENJAMIN HAN Concordia University Wisconsin, USA This article examines the transnational popularity of K-pop in Latin America. It argues K- pop as a subculture that transforms into transcultural fandom via digital mediation, further resulting in its accommodation into Latin American mass culture. The article further engages in a critical analysis of K-pop fan activism in Latin America to explore the transcultural dynamics of K-pop fandom. In doing so, the article provides a more holistic approach to the study of the Korean Wave in Latin America within the different “scapes” of globalization. Keywords: K-pop, fandom, Latin America, digital culture, Korean Wave The popularity of K-pop around the globe has garnered mass media publicity as Psy’s “Gangnam Style” reached number two on the Billboard Charts and became the most watched video on YouTube in 2012. Although newspapers, trade journals, and scholars have examined the growing transnational popularity of K-pop in East Asia, the reception and consumption of K-pop in Latin America have begun to receive serious scholarly consideration only in the last few years. Numerous reasons have been explicated for the international appeal and success of K-pop, but it also is important to understand that the transnational and transcultural fandom of K-pop cannot be confined solely to its metavisual aesthetics that creatively syncretize various genres of global popular music such as Black soul and J-pop. K-pop as hybrid music accentuated with powerful choreography is a form of visual spectacle but also promotes a particular kind of lifestyle represented by everyday modernity in which social mobility in the form of stardom becomes an important facet of the modernization process in Latin America.
