There are five local authorities, covering urban and rural communities, with coterminous policing districts. West Yorkshire has a higher than average demand in relation to crime and calls for service. This reflects the challenges faced, as over half of the wards have areas in the top 10% of the deprivation index and unemployment is above the national average. The black, Asian and minority ethnic population is increasing and is currently 18.2%. Maintaining community confidence is essential and engagement is improving as a result of the Force’s innovative positive action recruitment campaign. District policing provides local neighbourhood, response, crime investigation and safeguarding functions, supported centrally by specialist operational and crime capabilities and back office services. The force is focused on improving its approach to safeguarding, working in partnership to better identify and support those at risk. The force hosts the National Police Air Service and the North East Counter Terrorism Unit, which manages locally the threat from Daesh/IS inspired groups and the increasing threat from the extreme right wing. The force collaborates across the Yorkshire and Humber Region around operational and support services and leads on the provision of scientific support.

  • Press Release for West Yorkshire, Policing in Austerity
    West Yorkshire Police has made good progress in achieving their savings for the comprehensive spending review period. Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) has today published a report on West Yorkshire Police’s progress in meeting the challenges of the 2010 comprehensive spending review. A thematic report, Policing in Austerity: One Year On, found that police forces across England and Wales have risen to the financial challenge of the spending review, cutting their spending while largely maintaining the service they provide to the public; but HMIC has some concerns about whether all forces have transformed their efficiency to the extent that this can be sustained through the next three years (and into future spending reviews). Based on the data provided by the force, HMIC found that: West Yorkshire Police needs to save £103 million between March 2011 and March 2015. By spring 2012, they had planned how to save 95% of this amount. The force is planning to cut its total workforce number (i.e. police officers, police staff and police community support officers) by 1,960 between March 2010 and March 2015. 810 of these will be police officer posts; this means there will be 14% fewer officers in West Yorkshire (compared with a 10% average officer reduction across England and Wales). By 2015, 79% of its workforce will be in the front line: this is a higher proportion than most other forces. The proportion of officers in frontline roles will also increase between March 2010 and March 2015 (87% vs 94%) This means West Yorkshire Police will have a greater proportion of police officers on the front line than most other forces Crime rates are decreasing in West Yorkshire, although at a slower rate than across England and Wales as a whole.

Here is PCSO Day meeting Calverley's own local celebrity cat Willis Priest. Our new fluffy friend raised over £100 for the British Red Cross at the Calverley Spring Clean Garage Sale. The event was organised by Calverley Village Guide Association and local businesses. The day was a success, with families joining in to buy new and pre-loved items, enjoy some tasty food and indulge in some crafts. Well done, everyone and thanks for having us! OK, before we start there is an argument that the first motorway was opened a year earlier in 1958 and was called the Preston by-pass. However, it wasn’t designated as a motorway (part of the M6) until several years later and so the other side of the coin will argue that the first ‘official’ motorway, the M1 was opened on 2nd November 1959. But the fact remains that from 1958/9 Britain’s motorway network expanded across the country and is now an integral part of our transport system and our everyday lives. And for obvious reasons it needs policing and so we find ourselves here in particular celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Policing the Motorway. Those Police officers who have worked on ‘the strip’ over the years will have an affinity towards it that is hard to describe. It can be an extremely dangerous place to work but it can also be an exhilarating one.
