Paranotocoris Ahmad & Shadab, 1973, a new synonym of Phyllomorpha Laporte, 1833 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Coreidae)

The tribe Phyllomorphini Mulsant & Rey, 1870 of the family Coreidae, subfamily Coreinae, is represented in the Palaearctic Region by three genera (Pephricus Amyot & Serville, 1843, Phyllomorpha Laporte, 1833, and Tongorma Kirkaldy, 1900) and four species. Two of them, Pephricus subtilis Montandon, 1913 and Tongorma latreillii (Guérin-Méneville, 1839) are known only from Yemen and represent Afrotropical faunal elements in the Arabian Peninsula. The only truly Palaearctic genus is therefore Phyllomorpha, comprising two species—P. lacerata Herrich-Schäffer, 1835 and P. laciniata (Villers, 1789)—distributed in southern Europe, North Africa, and western Asia from Turkey to Oman, Central Asia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (Dolling 2006). Ahmad & Shadab (1974) described another monotypic genus from the Pakistani province of Baluchistan, Pronotocoris Ahmad & Shadab, 1974 (type species Paranotocoris echinus Ahmad & Shadab, 1974). Recent study of the original descriptions of both of the taxa drove us to the conclusion that Pronotocoris is a junior subjective synonym of Phyllomorpha, and Pronotocoris echinus a junior subjective synonym of Phyllomorpha lacerata.

Phyllomorpha Laporte, 1833

Phyllomorpha Laporte, 1833: 47. Selected as correct original spelling and placed on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology (ICZN 2008: Opinion 2198). Type species: Coreus hystrix Latreille, 1817 (= (Villers, 1789)) by subsequent designation (Reuter 1888: 414). Phyllomorphus: Laporte (1833: 41). Incorrect original spelling, placed on the Official Index of Rejected and Invalid Generic Names (ICZN 2008: Opinion 2198). Craspedum Rambur, 1839: 138. Unnecessary new name for Phyllomorpha Laporte, 1833. Phyllophya Stål, 1873: 80. Synonymized by Horváth (1889: 326). Type species: Phyllomorpha persica Westwood, 1841 (= Phyllomorpha lacerata Herrich-Schäffer, 1835) by monotypy. Paranotocoris Ahmad & Shadab, 1974: 181, syn. nov. Hereby fixed as correct original spelling under Article 24.2.3 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999). Type species: Paranotocoris echinus Ahmad & Shadab, 1974, by original designation. Paranotocornis: Ahmad & Shadab (1974: 181). Incorrect original spelling. Paranotocoris: Ahmad et al. (1977: 6, 24) (key to genera, catalogue); Ahmad (1979: 7) (key to tribes and genera); Ahmad (1980: 122, 131) (checklist).

Taxonomy. Ahmad & Shadab (1974) described the new genus, provided illustrations of habitus, metathoracic scent gland peritreme, hemelytron, hindwing, abdominal trichobothrial pattern, and male genitalia (pygophore, paramere, and phallus), and compared it to other related genera. According to them Paranotocoris ‘... can be easily distinguished from all other genera of the tribe Phyllomorphini by the following characters: body with large and small spines all over, except on third and fourth antennal segments and distal portion of tibiae and tarsi; basal antennal segment very long, longer than third and fourth segments combined; and labium reaching beyond the anterior margin of fourth abdominal venter.’ However, characters of the antennae (antennal segment I long, antennal segments II and III unarmed) and legs (tibiae unarmed except of two spines frequently present at their extreme base), considered as of generic significance by Ahmad & Shadab (1974), perfectly fit Phyllomorpha lacerata, and they are universally considered in the literature as diagnostic for Ph. lacerata at the species level,

Accepted by C. Schaefer: 15 Apr. 2013; published: 17 May 2013 397 differentiating it from Ph. laciniata (e.g., Stichel 1959, Gidayatov 1982, Moulet 1995). The apex of labium extends from base of abdominal sternite III to middle of abdominal sternite IV in various specimens of Ph. lacerata examined by us, therefore P. echinus falls within the variability range of Ph. lacerata, and otherwise this character obviously does not have generic importance. Comparison of the description and illustrations of P. echinus with specimens of Ph. lacerata deposited in the collections of the National Museum, Praha, and Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest left no doubt that the two are conspecific. For this reason, we consider Paranotocoris Ahmad & Shadab, 1974, syn. nov., a junior subjective synonym of Phyllomorpha Laporte, 1833.

Nomenclature. The genus name is spelled Paranotocoris throughout the paper (Ahmad & Shadab 1974), but an alternative spelling Paranotocornis occurs once on page 181, apparently as a result of inadvertent error. Therefore Paranotocoris is hereby fixed as the correct original spelling under Article 24.2.3 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999). Note. Burmeister (1835: 310), acting as First Reviser, selected Phyllomorphus as the correct original spelling. Westwood (1840: 484) validly designated Cimex paradoxus Sparrmann, 1777 (= Pephricus paradoxus

Phyllomorpha laceratus Herrich-Schäffer, 1835: 41, 73. Phyllomorpha persica Westwood, 1841: 8. Synonymized by Horváth (1889: 326). Paranotocoris echinus Ahmad & Shadab, 1974: 181–186, figs 1–8, syn. nov. Holotype: male, Pakistan, Baluchistan, Mekran, 8 mile to Turbat on Kalat and Turbat Highway, 24.iv.1969, I. Ahmad lgt. (coll. Natural History Museum, Department of Zoology, University of Karachi). Paranotocoris echinus: Ahmad et al. (1977: 14: figs 4, 24, 37) (catalogue, habitus figure); Ahmad (1979: 42) (checklist); Ahmad (1980: 131) (checklist).

Taxonomy. As it was discussed above, the original description and illustrations of Paranotocoris echinus fit perfectly the characters of Ph. lacerata. In spite of occurrence of Ph. lacerata in the neighbouring regions of Afghanistan and Iran (including the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchistan) (see Wagner 1961, 1968; Kiritshenko 1963; Brown 1966; Hoberlandt 1989; Hoberlandt & Švihla 1990; Linnavuori 2007, 2012; Ghahari et al. 2012), the latter species was omitted by the authors when diagnosing P. e ch i nu s . We propose the following new subjective synonymy: Paranotocoris echinus Ahmad & Shadab, 1974, syn. nov. = Phyllomorpha lacerata Herrich- Schäffer, 1835. Distribution. Southern Europe (Albania, Greece, Italy, ?Yugoslavia), North Africa (Algeria), Near East (Asian Turkey, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria), Transcaucasia (Azerbaijan, Armenia), Central Asia (Asian Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan), Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (Dolling 2006). There seems to be no reliable record published from the former Yugoslavia (see Protić 2001).
