Downloaded from DRO: http://hdl.handle.net/10536/DRO/DU:30016714 DRO Deakin Research Online, Deakin University’s Research Repository Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Fixers and foreign correspondents: news production and autonolt1.y Colleen Murrell Abstract The television foreign correspondent s licence to roam and generate news is increasingly under threat. This paper concentrates on the micro production processes of today s correspondent as he or she goes about thejob ofnews gathering "on the road", and considers the changing na ture ofthe correspondent s autonomy. It inserts the missing character in foreign newsgathering - the locally hired fixer - and explores how this person affects the correspondents autonomy. An analysis of interviews with 20 foreign correspondents and five fixers leads to the conclusion that the foreign correspondent is rarely the sole editorial figure on the road but is instead the main actor representing the creative interplay of a succession offixers or "local producers". This deconstruction of the ways in which a correspondent builds an ad-hoc newsgathering team each time he or she lands in a new place allows for a deeper under standing ofthe modus operandi ofreporters. Introduction When it comes to sharing the credit, I think that it is one of the high crimes in journalism, for western and non-western producers and fixers and translators to not share the credit. Because obviously with foreign correspondency and also with television, it is team work, it is not a single individual.

All in the midst of the American war in Iraq? Short Synopsis Theatrical feature documentary Only the Dead is the story of what happens when one ordinary man, an Australian journalist transplanted into the Middle East by the reverberations of 9/11, butts into history. It is a journey that courses through the deepest recesses of the Iraq war, revealing a darkness lurking in his own heart. A darkness that he never knew was there. The invasion of Iraq has ended, and the Americans are celebrating victory. The year is 2003. The international press corps revel in the Baghdad “Summer of Love”, there is barely a spare hotel room in the entire city. Reporters of all nationalities scramble for stories; of the abuses of Saddam’s fallen regime; of WMD’s, of reconstruction, of liberation. There are pool parties, and restaurant outings, and dinner-party circuits. Occasionally, Coalition forces are attacked, but always elsewhere, somewhere in the background.

---------------------- Unclassified The Importance 1 Running head: THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDYING MILITARY HISTORY The Importance ofStudying Military History MSG Daniel T. Hendrex United States Army Sergeants Major Academy Class 57 SGM Scott A. Landy 6 April 2007 Unclassified -----~------- The Importance 2 Abstract In the Global War on Terrorism, we must take the time to study our past to avoid repeating mistakes in the future. Our Soldiers are not fighting our grandfather's wars. Our battlefield is unconventional and our enemies are using all tools at their disposal. One of those tools is the media which plays a major role in all armed conflicts that we undertake. The modem media bombards the public with dramatic and negative aspects of the conflict and it withers public resolve. Experiences from Vietnam, Somalia, and Iraq shape our modem battlefield and the changing landscape of contemporary warfare. The modem media is a major aspect of that landscape and can be just as vicious as any enemy we face. The Importance 3 The Importance of Studying Military History A simple picture, video clip, or editorial can have an enormous impact on the psyche of today's populace. Constant negative images sway opinion and therefore affect the military's ability to win in armed conflict. During WWII, Joe Rosenthal snapped a picture ofUnited States (US.) Marines raising a flag atop Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. "In that moment, Rosenthal's camera recorded the soul of a nation", stated editors ofUS. Camera Magazine (Rosenthal, 1945). At that time in history, the images of war were overwhelmingly pro-American and positive which unified our nations resolve.

America’s involvement with the region dates back to the days of George Washington, long before an oil boom, and subsequent wars, redefined the political map. But these days, things are different. The U.S. has largely withdrawn its boots on the ground. Israel has a host of new and relatively friendly neighbors. Of course, the Iran Nuclear Deal is, more or less, dead. It’s a far cry from the situation Joe Biden left four years ago when he was Vice President. This approach, for some, was the right one. An unorthodox style that netted some wins and kept America’s enemies at bay. 00:01:00 For others, it squandered U.S. influence. But now, of course, it’s President Biden’s chance to again shift American foreign policy. But the question remains, for the last four years, did America get the Middle East right? Hi everybody, and welcome to Intelligence Squared, 2021, our first marquee debate of the year. I’m John Donvan, your host and I will also be your debate referee. And today in this debate, we are going to be looking and the Middle East.
