In collaboration with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko he co‐created Spider‐Man, the Hulk, the X‐Men, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor and many others. In 1939 he became an assistant at the New Timely Comics which became in the 1960s Marvel Comics. In 1941 he made his debut as a comic book writer, as the text filler for a Captain America story. It was here that he used the pseudonym Stan Lee which he legally adopted some years later. In the late 1950s DC Comics re‐launched the superhero archetype with an updated version of The Flash which was met with such a significant response that the publisher of Marvel Comics, Martin Goodman assigned Stan Lee to create a new superhero team. Stan gave his characters flawed personalities that was different to the way superheroes previously had been portrayed. With artist Jack Kirby, Stan Lee’s first creation was the Fantastic Four. The success of the stories led to Stan and Kirby creating the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and the X‐Men. With Bill Everett it was Daredevil Of course with Steve Ditko it was Doctor Strange and Marvel’s most successful character, Spiderman. Stan Lee led the expansion of Marvel Comics into a multimedia corporation. In the 2000s he worked for DC Comics, launching the “Just Imagine…” series in which he reimagined the DC superheroes of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and The Flash.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by NECTAR 1 The Girls Who Waited? Female Companions and Gender in Doctor Who Lorna Jowett Abstract: Science fiction has the potential to offer something new in terms of gender representation. This doesn’t mean it always delivers on this potential. Amid the hype surrounding the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the longest running science fiction series on television, a slightly critical edge is discernable in the media coverage concerning the casting of the twelfth Doctor and issues of representation in the series. This paper examines Doctor Who in the broader context of TV drama and changes to the TV industry, analysing the series’ gender representation, especially in the 2005 reboot, and focusing largely on the female ‘companions’. Keywords: gender representation, television, feminism, BBC. When I put together an earlier version of this paper two years ago, I discovered a surprising gap in the academic study of Doctor Who around gender. Gender in science fiction has often been studied, after all, and Star Trek, another science fiction television series starting in the 1960s (original run 1966-69) and continued via spin-offs and reboots, has long been analysed in terms of gender. So why not Doctor Who? Admittedly, Doctor Who’s creators have no clear philosophy about trying to represent a more equal society, as with the utopian Trek. The lack of scholarship on gender in Doctor Who may also be part of a lack of scholarship generally on the series—academic study of it is just gaining momentum, and only started to accumulate seriously in the last five years.

Drama of Tony Blair, IT and gangsta rap can be strange DRAMA and comfortless, leaving these working-class heroes happy to try their luck at one more job. They cemented their friendships in Germany and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Spain, and this new series takes the “cowboy” builders on an incredible journey from Middlesbrough to Arizona. “The timing seems absolutely right for the return of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet,” says Controller of Drama Commissioning, Jane Tranter. “The fact that all the original team have embraced it so enthusiastically demonstrates the power that the show still has to excite people. It’s moved on, in spirit and in time, and the maturity of the characters has brought a new edge and humour to the storytelling.” A BBC production for BBC ONE, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet is produced by Joy Spink and directed by Paul Seed. The executive producers are Laura Mackie and Franc Roddam. Being April Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, the hit drama of the Eighties, which followed the fortunes of an intrepid band of British brickies, returns to BBC ONE this spring. The production reunites the original cast of Jimmy Nail (Oz), Timothy Spall (Barry), Kevin Whately (Neville), Tim Healy (Dennis), Pat Roach (Bomber), Christopher Fairbank (Moxey) and newcomer Noel Clarke (Wyman), with original writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and creator Franc Roddam. The last 15 years have been kinder to some of the lads than others. One drives a Bentley, another a taxi. Marriages have come and gone. But when Oz turns up with an irresistible offer, the “Magnificent Seven” find that the friendships they made on the road to Düsseldorf Three kids.

  • Jodie Whittaker's Doctor Proved the Doubters Wrong
TV Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor proved the doubters wrong 4 MIN The Doctor has always been a role model for everyone, but now we can aspire to be her, too, says Elizabeth Sulis Kim By Elizabeth Sulis Kim This week, Jodie Whittaker made her debut as the Doctor, the iconic time traveller who travels through time and space in a blue box. Except she lost her TARDIS and fell to earth, in an episode aptly titled The Woman Who Fell To Earth, set in Sheffield. The new regeneration of the Doctor is blonde, a woman and, at 5ft 5in, she’s just a little taller than me. She has a Yorkshire accent, reminiscent of my grandmother’s. She’s also a Time Lord and an alien with two hearts. In her debut appearance, she’s up against a menacing tooth- faced monster called Tim Shaw and “the tentacle-y thing”. Neither would have been too out-of-place in Classic Who. Whittaker’s outfit (which I will definitely be wearing at the next London Comic Con) is a nod to her predecessors. The stripes on her T-shirt are similar to those on Tom Baker’s iconic scarf, she wears braces like Matt Smith’s, while her high-waisted trousers are reminiscent of Patrick Troughton’s. Every Doctor is in some ways a homage to those who came before, each unique despite the amalgamation of different parts. Doctor Who is the longest-running sci-fi show for a reason; though forever iconic, it has always been one of the most progressive shows, always ready to adapt.
