Also, this story has no framing story so it runs a bit short. But without a secondary cast member to tell the story to - The Stealers from Saiph all Romana I - and I enjoyed that. The story starts off as a Agatha Christie-style story with Romana and the Fourth Doctor as played by Tom Bakerstaying in a luxury hotel on the French Riveria in The other guests are wealthy holiday goers. Soon it becomes apparent there's a thief at work in the hotel, and some sort of mysterious goings on regarding one of the guests. And then there's the inevitable murder. The Stealers from Saiph the second half of the story makes a The Stealers from Saiph left and resembles an H. Lovecraft story. And that sharp change moves this story from being fun, light, and typical, to an interesting, unusual, and unique Doctor Who story both The Stealers from Saiph tone and substance. I enjoyed the story very much and I recommend it. Don't let the first part put you off, though I enjoyed the s historical glamour. The second half makes this a fun listen. View 1 comment. A rare appearance for the late Mary Tamm in reprising her role as the first on-screen 'Romana' highlights The Stealers from Saiph solidly written, if unspectacular, story. The 'Roaring Twenties' era provides plenty of opportunity for Tamm to give voice to over-eager posh snobs eager to dance the Charleston, and there is amusing banter featuring Romana spurning the advances of suitors. The rather aristocratic bearing that Tamm brought to the role on TV is tapped to good effect here: the setting perfectly allows for her particular version of Romana to move among the upper-class blue-bloods and blend in with them in a way that her successor wouldn't. To that end, the story truly works 'for' this particular character and actress. There are far too many repetitive scenes of The Doctor and Romana comparing notes once separated from their respective travelling companions that could have been edited out or trimmed. A particularly odd occurrence is The Doctor's nonchalant ill regard for an elderly character that attempts to warn him of the changes to the atmosphere and the rotation of the stars that would have clued him The Stealers from Saiph to the villain's intention long before he actually grows suspicious. The otherwise offbeat and curious Fourth Doctor is depicted as being embarrassed with The Stealers from Saiph perceived attention from a 'fan' of his, and is teased often by Romana over it. This struck me as a ham-fisted way to introduce clues into the story yet not have The Doctor immediately seek them out. It just felt out of character for this particular Doctor to The Stealers from Saiph away from attention, especially due to Romana's mockery of it. It is a fine story with some good characters and for the most part, moves along at a decent pace, save for some repetitious dialog. Sadly, it stands out as one of the few examples of Mary Tamm's contributions to 'Doctor Who' on audio, and it is the promise of further adventures contained within that she could have recounted and performed that makes this worth seeking out for Whovians. Aug 26, April Mccaffrey rated it it was amazing. Great story voiced by the beautiful and late Mary Tamn. Jul 01, Susanne rated it liked it. Solid little story and Mary Tamm is fantastic. The Fourth Doctor is characterized as annoying and thoughtless, but Romana is perfect moving among the bright young things during the Roaring Twenties. Nov 09, Sidney McKidney rated it it was ok. The plot on this one doesn't really stand out, but it's a great pleasure to hear Mary Tamm in the role of Romana again. This Companion Chronicle is performed completely solo by the late Mary Tamm who portrayed the original as far as we know incarnation of Romana. It is delightful to hear her portrayal of Tom Baker as The Doctor as well as all of the other characters.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by NECTAR 1 The Girls Who Waited? Female Companions and Gender in Doctor Who Lorna Jowett Abstract: Science fiction has the potential to offer something new in terms of gender representation. This doesn’t mean it always delivers on this potential. Amid the hype surrounding the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the longest running science fiction series on television, a slightly critical edge is discernable in the media coverage concerning the casting of the twelfth Doctor and issues of representation in the series. This paper examines Doctor Who in the broader context of TV drama and changes to the TV industry, analysing the series’ gender representation, especially in the 2005 reboot, and focusing largely on the female ‘companions’. Keywords: gender representation, television, feminism, BBC. When I put together an earlier version of this paper two years ago, I discovered a surprising gap in the academic study of Doctor Who around gender. Gender in science fiction has often been studied, after all, and Star Trek, another science fiction television series starting in the 1960s (original run 1966-69) and continued via spin-offs and reboots, has long been analysed in terms of gender. So why not Doctor Who? Admittedly, Doctor Who’s creators have no clear philosophy about trying to represent a more equal society, as with the utopian Trek. The lack of scholarship on gender in Doctor Who may also be part of a lack of scholarship generally on the series—academic study of it is just gaining momentum, and only started to accumulate seriously in the last five years.
