Intermarriage and Jewish Leadership in the United States
Steven Bayme Intermarriage and Jewish Leadership in the United States There is a conflict between personal interests and collective Jewish welfare. As private citizens, we seek the former; as Jewish leaders, however, our primary concern should be the latter. Jewish leadership is entrusted with strengthening the collective Jewish endeavor. The principle applies both to external questions of Jewish security and to internal questions of the content and meaning of leading a Jewish life. Countercultural Messages Two decades ago, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) adopted a “Statement on Mixed Marriage.”1 The statement was reaffirmed in 1997 and continues to represent the AJC’s view regarding Jewish communal policy on this difficult and divisive issue. The document, which is nuanced and calls for plural approaches, asserts that Jews prefer to marry other Jews and that efforts at promoting endogamy should be encouraged. Second, when a mixed marriage occurs, the best outcome is the conversion of the non-Jewish spouse, thereby transforming a mixed marriage into an endogamous one. When conversion is not possible, efforts should be directed at encouraging the couple to raise their children exclusively as Jews. All three messages are countercultural in an American society that values egalitarianism, universalism, and multiculturalism. Preferring endogamy contradicts a universalist ethos of embracing all humanity. Encouraging conversion to Judaism suggests preference for one faith over others. Advocating that children be raised exclusively as Jews goes against multicultural diversity, which proclaims that having two faiths in the home is richer than having a single one. It is becoming increasingly difficult for Jewish leaders to articulate these messages. -

Resolution to Form UNITY (Unaffiliated Independent Temple Youth) In NFTY Chicago Area Region Submitted to the NFTY CAR Regional Board Winter Kallah 5777 December 17th, 2016 Background: The North American Federation of Temple Youth, or NFTY, founded in 1939, currently has nineteen regions formed by over 800 TYGs, or Temple Youth Groups. ● In 1939 NFTY was founded as part of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC), now the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). ● In the past, TYG’s have been groups of teens from a synagogue and NFTY has served as the regional conglomerate of these entities. ● During an asefah, or plenary meeting, or during regional events, members of TYG’s vote on legislation and elect regional board members as a voting block allocated a certain number of votes based on representation. ● In recent years, as NFTY has expanded to include all Jewish youth who want a Reform Jewish experience, there has been an increase in the number of unaffiliated youth who do not receives these voting options and all privileges that may result from representation, because their families do not formally affiliate with a youth group or reform synagogue for a multitude of rationales. CIVIL ENFORCEMENT OF JEWISH MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE: CONSTITUTIONAL ACCOMMODATION OF A RELIGIOUS MANDATE INTRODUCTION When a Jewish couple marries, both parties sign an ornate docu- ment known as a ketubah. In layman's terms, the ketubah is the Jew- ish marriage license.' The majority of rabbis officiating a wedding will require the signing of a ketubah as part of the wedding ceremony. 2 Legal and Jewish scholars have interpreted the ketubah as a legally binding contract which sets out the guidelines for a Jewish marriage and divorce.3 Using this interpretation, a number of courts have re- quired that one party accommodate the other in following the speci- fied divorce proceedings that are mandated by Jewish law.4 The Jewish law requirements for a valid divorce are strict and often diffi- cult to enforce; namely, the law requires that a husband "voluntarily" give his wife a document called a get in order to dissolve the marriage according to traditional Jewish law.5 While the civil marriage contract alone binds the marriage in the eyes of the state, courts nonetheless have found the ketubah to be binding as well, and they have enforced both express and implied pro- visions of the ketubah in granting a civil dissolution of a marriage be- tween a Jewish couple. -

Bring the memories of your own childhood bedtime ritual into the present to flavor your choices. The Shema can be the first prayer said by a child. And by teaching it to your child, you will be linking your family into a chain of tradition that stretches back two thousand years to Talmudic times. If you see yourself in a relationship with God who is in heaven and directs the world, the Shema affirms that there is only one God that we all worship. If you prefer a more mystical understanding and imagine God as not only present in the universe but that the universe is a manifestation of God, then the Shema affirms God’s unity with all creation. Some people tend to think that Jews in the past thought and did Rituals give a comforting shape to a child’s day. They offer a child a sense everything the same “orthodox” way, but Judaism has always been a of stability and security that provide a gentle transition to sleep. OFThrough THE the DECISION-MAKING Sustainable Synagogues CULTUREBusiness Models project, facilitated by Measuring Success from 2009 to 2012, UJA-Federation learned that thriving synagogues regularly assess and make decisions based on the extent to which their communal vision, mission, and values are aligned with all aspects of synagogue life. We also learned that it matters which systems synagogues SELF-ASSESSMENTuse to collect data. In order TOOL to help synagogues assess which system might meet their particular needs, UJA-Federation funded the development of “A Guide to Synagogue Management Systems: Research and Recommendations,” and more recently a 2014 update, in collaboration with the Orthodox Union (OU), THEUnion DATA for ReformMATURITY Judaism PROGRESSION (URJ), and United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ). Furthermore, we have also learned through observations in the field that synagogues are not simply “data-driven or not data-driven.” Rather, there is a broad spectrum of data maturity, beginning with simple data collection and moving along the spectrum in complexity to reflect more sophisticated SUPPORTINGuses of data. Putting the Silent Partner Back Into Partnership Minyanim Rabbi Dr. Barry Freundel Introduction Over the last few years a new phenomenon has appeared on the Jewish scene. This phenomenon referred to as “Partnership Minyanim”, claims to be Orthodox and/or halakhic, and to offer increased opportunities for women to participate in services.1 Specifically, women are allowed to serve as prayer leader (in some venues a woman is always asked to lead) for Kabbalat Shabbat—but not for Maariv on Friday night. On Shabbat morning a women may serve as Hazan(it)for Pesukei Dezmira but not for Shaharit and Musaf. So too, a girl may be asked to conclude the Shabbat morning services beginning with Ein Kelokeinu. Finally, women are given aliyot and read Torah at these services (in some places this is allowed only after the third aliyah).2 There are some of these groups that follow somewhat different structures.3 The title of this article reflects a fundamental concern about how this new development has come to the community. Poles and Jews: The Quest For Self-Determination 1919- 1934 By Feigue Cieplinski Poland became an independent nation against all odds in the interwar period and retained her sovereignty from 1919 to 1939; hence the concept “interwar Poland.” The vicissitudes of her existence earned her the name of “God’s Playground.” [1] The Jews within her borders shared her history since 1240 C.E. Their freedoms during this period, unequaled in other places of Western Europe, earned Poland the Biblical allusion of “New Canaan.” [2] In contrast, some scholars have described Poland’s Jewry in the interwar Republic as being “On the Edge Of Destruction.” [3] That Polish Jewry was in distress is attested by the urgent visit of Mr. Neville Laski, a member of the British Joint Foreign Committee closely associated with the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and the Joint Distribution Committee, in 1934. [4] His August visit fell between two historical events framing Polish Jewry’s status: seven months before, in January of that year, Poland and Germany signed a bilateral non- aggression declaration and in September Colonel Josef Beck, as Foreign Minister, announced in Geneva, his country’s unilateral abrogation of the Minorities Treaty in force since 1919. The scholars listed below have studied separately either the birth of Poland and the imposition of the Minorities Protection Treaty, the rapprochement between Poland and Germany, or the situation of the Jews in Poland. However, they have paid scant attention to the nexus between the rise of Hitler, the rapprochement between Poland and Germany, the demise of the Minorities Protection Treaty, and the consequent worsening situation of Polish Jewry. -
