These theoretical and practical aspects, knowledge of which is significant in terms of the continuity of history and experience of urban landscape architecture, academic education, and study programme are highlighted. After destroying in 1706 by Swedish troops during the Great Northern War, the Palace (Fig. 1) and its surroundings were rebuilt in 1731 1736 to designs by architect Jan Zygmunt Deybel (ca 1690 1752). The settlement in 1784 became the property of Prince Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski (1734 1835). Under their stewardship the Pulawy Manor became a museum and cultural centre of Polish national memorabilia.     Archaeologia Polona, vol. 50 : 2012(2019), 111–147 PL ISSN 0066 - 5924 European Identity and Polish Culture – Tomasz Mikocki’s Studies on the Tradition of Ancient Art Monika Rekowskaa Tomasz Mikocki’s studies on the tradition of ancient art in Poland played a very important role in his scientific research. Professor Mikocki was convinced that the art and culture of antiq- uity was one of the elements of searching Polish identity, simultaneously confirming an affiliation to the same cultural sphere as Italy, France or Great Britain, the direct heirs of the Imperium Romanum. Therefore, his main aim was to study and publish the media of reception of antique forms and models in Polish art and culture. Eventually, he analysed different aspects of this phenomenon, primarily travels and collections of original Graeco-Roman antiquities and antique- like artefacts, finally the decorative programme of the entire park-and-residence complexes, where Antiquity had an eminent meaning. KEY-WORDS: Antiquity, Greek and Roman art, antique tradition, collections, Grand-Tour, historical parks, gardens à l’antique INTRODUCTION Studies on the legacy of Antiquity in Polish culture have a long history and a rich literature. Initially they were undertaken mainly on philological and literary grounds. Meanwhile, there are other manifestations of the tradition of Antiquity, such as Clas- sicist art and Neo-classical architecture, the collecting of original, Greek and Roman, art-works and their copies and imitations, and above all a long tradition of cultural contacts with Italy and France. The considerable impact of Classical culture on the Poles was facilitated by their extensive philological formation, the diffusion of which was due to the educational system and the teaching of the Classics in schools.

    Adolf Juzwenko Ossolineum. 200 years with the people in search of their way to independence In the 1790s, count Józef Maksymilian Ossoli ński was in Vienna, seeking support for patriotic initiatives intended at preventing the collapse of the Polish state. Because it turned out to be impossible to prevent, Ossoli ński decided he should engage himself in the protection of national identity, historical memory and the will of the people to remain themselves. The family establishment of the Ossolineum Library, presented by the count to the emperor of Austria on 18 October 1816, was approved on 4 June 1817. It was indeed a success – after nearly twenty years of attempts, taken during various conflicts tearing Europe, Ossoli ński managed to give his compatriots an institution which proved to be increasingly successful in supporting Polish resistance against forced Russification and Germanisation. At the turn of the 20 th century, the arrangement of political powers in Europe had changed radically. When the Institute celebrated its 100 th anniversary in 1917, Europe had been at war for three years. The conflict continued between powers divided into two camps – Triple Entente and Triple Alliance. On the Eastern front, Germany and Austria-Hungary struggled against Russia, on the Western one – France and Great Britain fought against Germany. All parties were exhausted by the conflict, the armies – demoralised by Bolshevik propaganda. Eventually, United States' involvement determined the fate of the war. The chances for deep political changes in Europe grew. Nations of Europe, previously deprived of sovereignty, had begun to reach for independence. When the war ended, on 11 November 1918, Poles had begun to build their own state.

From (closed) gardens and parks to cabinets, from the odd room to the train compartment, from the façade to the prison cell, from the reliquary to the desk, a variety of spaces in the shape of imageries and images unveils historical attitudes to history, to the object, to the other and the self and presents a subject that experiences, acts, imagines and knows. Spatial imageries and images in this sense constitute a prominent theme in various fields within the Humanities, from museum studies, intellectual history and literature to material culture studies, to name but a few.
