Notaries in the Quebec City Region, 1759 to 1899 The Notaries in Quebec City who were first appointed by the British authorities and later-on during the Lower Canada time period The 1851 and 1861 censuses The 1851 and 1861 censuses were the only two decennial censuses conducted in Lower Canada. In 1851, the population of Québec City was 42,052, almost twice the size it had been in 1825. The city continued to grow, reaching 51,109 persons in 1861. This large increase in population during the 19th century was the combined result of a relative decline in mortality and an increase in the birth rate. Despite continuing immigration, the effect of this growth was to increase the share of the population born in Canada from less than 70% in 1825 to almost 80% in 1861. Statistics Canada http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/11-008-x/2008001/article/10574-eng.htm The 1861 census indicated that the population of Quebec was nearly 1.2 million, of which 86% were Catholic. Of the total population, 78% was French, 10% was Irish, 6% was English, and 5% was Scottish. At the time of Confederation, the total population of the British North American colonies was about 3.5 million, of which 75% lived in United Canada (Quebec and Ontario). About 80% of the population of United Canada lived in rural areas. From 1840 to 1867, despite an exodus of close to 200,000 people to factories in New England, Quebec's population nearly doubled. Montréal and Québec City were the main urban centres affected by the skyrocketing population. In 1851, the population of Montréal was 57,000; by 1861, it was 90,000. Québec City had a population of 50,000 in 1861. Québec in 1854 The year 1854 marked an important event in the history of Quebec: the abolition of the seigneurial system, a legacy of the French colonial era which governed land grants and land development in Lower Canada (later Canada East). In the 19th century, the landed bourgeoisie demanded that this system be changed. The government voted to abolish it in 1854 and to indemnify seigneurial landowners. 1 Though they were not living under this system, the inhabitants of Canada West and the Eastern Townships protested that they would not be paid and succeeded in winning some compensation. Scriver* t §III DeBelle Laboratory for Biochemical Genetics, McGill University-Montreal Children's Hospital Research Institute; Departments of tBiology, *Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and SPediatrics, and IlCentre for Human Genetics, McGill University, Montreal; and #Population Research Group (SOREP), Universite du Qudbec A Chicoutimi, Chicoutimi, Quebec Summary 1-Thalassemia minor occurs at _1% frequency in French-Canadians-in families residing in Portneuf County (population ~40,000) of Quebec province. We found eight different RFLP haplotypes at the 3-globin gene cluster in 37 normal persons and in 12 j-thalassemia heterozygotes from six families. 13-Thalassemia genes in these families associated with two haplotypes only: Mediterranean I and Mediterranean II. There were two different P-thalassemia mutations segregating in the Portneuf population: an RNA processing mutation (P3+IVS-1,nt11O) on haplotype I (five families) and a point mutation leading to chain termination (300 non- sense codon 39) on haplotype II (one family). The distribution of 5' haplotypes on normal P3A Portneuf chromosomes compared with other European populations was most similar to that in British subjects (data for French subjects have not yet been reported). Genealogical reconstructions traced the ancestry of carrier couples to settlers emigrating from several different regions of France to New France in the 17th century. These findings indicate genetic diversity of a greater degree among French-Canadians than recognized heretofore. Introduction a few specific 0-thalassemia genes occur at high fre- The 13-thalassemias are a heterogeneous group of dis- quencies in regional populations, together with numer- orders affecting hemoglobin synthesis.
