According to some 500 earlier versions of the story, Cinderella wore a magic ring or magic shoes made of gold, silver or another rare metal. The first suggestion of a glass slipper did not appear until 1697, when the French writer Charles Perrault wrote Cendrillon. Perrault Cinderella... copied previous French versions, which portrayed the fair maiden wearing “pantoufles en vair,” or “slippers of white squirrel fur.” However, by the time Perrault wrote his Proof that a pair of shoes script, vair had disappeared from the French language, so he replaced it with “verre,” meaning glass, and Cinderella has worn glass slippers ever since. can change a girl’s life! In Europe in the 17th century six inch high heels were worn by the upper classes. Two servants, one on either side, were needed to hold up the person wearing the high heels and it Cinderella is one of the oldest known fairy tales in the world. The story we all know and love was written by a wasn’t until the 18th century that women’s shoes were Frenchman, Charles Perrault, more than 300 years ago, but Cinderella is a lot, lot older than that! In fact one of different from men’s. the oldest known versions comes from China around the ninth century. So where does Cinderella actually come from? Well as we all know, she comes from a kingdom far, far away! ...Or does she? Actually Cinderella comes from ...well just about everywhere! One answer may be ancient Greece, over 2,000 years ago. The Greek historian Strabo told of a young servant girl called Rhodopis – or ‘Rosy Cheeks’ – who was fair and beautiful. The other servants hated Rhodopis and made her do extra chores. One day an eagle flew away with her sandal and then dropped it on the head of a king! Messengers were sent out to find the rightful owner of the sandal, and Rhodopis was brought before the king, who promptly married her. In the Italian story, the heroine is called Zezolla and she has two stepmothers. She plots with her governess to kill her first stepmother, the governess then goes on to marry In Hungary the groom drinks a toast Zezolla’s father and brings with her not two but six cruel stepsisters. In Kashmir, the Indian Cinderella loses her nose ring in the river, which swallows the ring, the fish is then caught and served to the king who finds the ring and begins his quest in finding his princess. Similar stories could also be found centuries ago in lots of other countries including the Philippines, Vietnam and Korea. Wherever she came from Cinderella eventually popped up in Europe, as an opera in Italy and thanks to the Brothers Grimm as a fairytale in Germany. After 2,000 years walking the globe (with just one shoe remember!) Cinderella finally made it into a pantomime in 1904 at London’s Drury Lane Theatre and has now 14 become the most frequently performed panto of them all. 15 Cast Synopsis IN order of appearance of Scenes Fairy Godmother .............Camilla Dallerup Cinderella...................Lucy Pollard Dandini .....................Danny Colligan ACT ONE Prince Charming .............Gary Tushaw Prologue Our Story Begins… Sharon .....................Stephen Richards Scene 1 The Town Square Nicole...................... Dance Fields Conference April 19th – 22nd 2017 Book of Abstracts (Chronologically listed) SESSIONSPANELSPRACTICALSWORKSHOPSROUND TABLES Thursday, April 20th 10:00 – 11:30 Session I Chair: Ann R. David Michael Huxley Dance Studies in the UK 1974-1984: A historical consideration of the boundaries of research and the dancer’s voice The first Study of Dance Conference was held at the University of Leeds in 1981. The following year saw the First Conference of British Dance Scholars in London, leading to the inauguration of the Society for Dance Research and then the publication of its journal, Dance Research. Since 1984, the field of dance studies in the UK has both developed and been debated. My paper draws on archival and other sources to reconsider this period historically. With the benefit of current ideas of what constitutes dance, practice, research, and history, it is possible to consider the early years of UK Dance Studies afresh. In the twenty-first-century there are some accepted notions of dance studies. I would argue that they have established boundaries, but that these are often unstated. The period is re-examined with a view to uncovering a broader, and indeed more inclusive, idea of dance studies. In this, attention is given to the researches of practitioners in the period; both published, including in New Dance, and unpublished. Whilst recognising the significant scholarship of the period, the paper also considers the ideas that dancers gave voice to. The analysis is taken further by considering the unexamined discourses that helped enable research in dance in the UK to develop in the way it did.

Premium Rate Telephony and Associated Issues Final Report from the BBC Director General to the BBC Trust, May 2007 1. Introduction 1.1 Context Following a number of revelations and resulting investigations into broadcasters’ use of premium rate telephony, allegations about BBC activity in this area surfaced in late February of this year. Reports were first published in the News of the World on 25 February about some pre-recorded editions of Saturday Kitchen. These were followed by a contact from a member of the public to the BBC on 9 March regarding an edition of Blue Peter broadcast in November 2006. On 17 March the Daily Mirror made further allegations about audience deception in relation to a second children’s programme, Smile. This report seeks to provide for the Trust an overview of the issues surrounding the BBC’s use of premium rate phonelines and the particular incidents which have been investigated. It also provides an account of the actions that have and will be taken by the BBC in relation to the various concerns which have surfaced. 1.2 Investigative Work Undertaken The BBC has investigated each set of allegations as they have arisen and where issues have been identified has sought to address them comprehensively. Over the last two months, the following work has therefore been undertaken: • Initial review by Controller, Daytime of Saturday Kitchen 5th March 2007 • Initial review by Controller, BBC Children’s of Blue Peter 9th to 14th March 2007 • Initial review by Controller, BBC Children’s of Smile 16th to 19th March 2007 • Independent review to inform BBC management on what went wrong on Blue Peter by Andrea Wills, former Chief Adviser, Editorial Policy, for the Director, BBC Vision, 17th May 2007.

  • Gender and Sexuality in Joan Rivers' Stand-Up Comedy Performance Sharon Lockyer, B
From toothpick legs to dropping vaginas: Gender and sexuality in Joan Rivers’ stand-up comedy performance Sharon Lockyer, Brunel University Abstract This article employs sociocultural analysis to examine Joan Rivers’ stand-up comedy performances in order to reveal how she successfully operates in a sphere of artistic expression that has been, and continues to be, male-dominated. The analysis uncovers how Rivers’ stand-up comedy performance involves a complex combination of elements and how it fuses features that are regarded as ‘traditionally masculine’, such as aggression, with features frequently used by other female stand-up comedians, such as self-deprecating comedy and confessional comedy. Furthermore, the analysis exposes the complex ways in which constructions of gender and sexuality are negotiated and re-negotiated in Rivers’ stand-up comedy performance, and illustrates how dominant ideological identity constructions can be simultaneously reinforced and subverted within the same comic moment. Keywords gender sexuality stand-up comedy Joan Rivers self-deprecation ageing female body masculine discourses Introduction A large body of academic and industry-related evidence suggests that the stand-up comedyscape has always been, and continues to be, male-dominated (Channel 4 2010; Chortle 2011; Gray 1994; Nilsen and Nilsen 2000; Ross 1998; Zoglin 2009). Such male dominance is reflected in the number of male stand-up comedians compared with female stand-up comedians and the aggressive performative features that this form of artistic expression utilizes, which are often perceived as ‘traditionally male’. Despite this, female 1 stand-up comedians can, and do, penetrate this male-dominated industry and have successful stand-up comedy careers.
