This might be the everyday meanings that humans attach to places bound up with a sense of identity and belonging. It also extends to ways that meanings of place might be created, such as through place making and marketing. Representations of places are important because of the way in which they shape peoples' actions and behaviours, and those of businesses, institutions and governments. Representations also provide a reference point for people's sense of identity, underpinning their attachments to place, particularly in times of change. Attention to meaning highlights the processes of representation through which places are depicted, variously by external agencies and by those who live in them. The meanings and identities ascribed to a place may also be related to its function, both social and economic, in the present and in the past. Places can have multiple meanings and identities, reflecting different perceptions and perspectives. A gloriously heart wrenching film brilliantly epitomizing time and change displaying how very precious every moment is. The magic of this movie is about time within time. It is about how time can be suspended, but never stopping. It is also about how it remains constant, but eternal and how ideas are immortalized through dreams and making them reality. It reminds us to take the time for remembrances of things past and there is a time for happiness. Scorsese's intricacies and close attention to detail actually take us into a different time and place where we, the viewers, can actually experience a reality different than our own. The director successfully depicts a deep and meaningful, soft, tender and painfully sweet reality as seen through the eyes of a child and through actual film footage of Marie. Georges-Jean Méliès who was a French illusionist and filmmaker famous for leading many technical and narrative developments in the earliest days of cinema. He was a prolific innovator in the use of special effects and hand-painted color in his work. -

Abstract This thesis examines written, audio-visual and musical representations of real-life British serial killers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady (the ‘Moors Murderers’) and Peter Sutcliffe (the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’), from the time of their crimes to the present day, and their proliferation beyond the cases’ immediate historical-legal context. Through the theoretical construct ‘Northientalism’ I interrogate such representations’ replication and engagement of stereotypes and anxieties accruing to the figure of the white working- class ‘Northern’ subject in these cases, within a broader context of pre-existing historical trajectories and generic conventions of Northern and true crime representation. Interrogating changing perceptions of the cultural functions and meanings of murderers in late-capitalist socio-cultural history, I argue that the underlying structure of true crime is the counterbalance between the exceptional and the everyday, in service of which its second crucial structuring technique – the depiction of physical detail – operates. -

[CINEMA] ROKEBACK AND OUTBACK BRIAN MCFARLANE WELCOMES THE LATEST COMEBACK OF THE WESTERN IN TWO DISPARATE GUISES FROM time to time someone pronounces 'The Western is dead.' Most often, the only appropriate reply is 'Long live the Western!' for in the cinema's history of more than a century no genre has shown greater longevity or resilience. If it was not present at the birth of the movies, it was there shortly after the midwife left and, every time it has seemed headed for the doldrums, for instance in the late 1930s or the 1960s, someone—such as John Ford with Stagecoach (1939) or Sergio Leone and, later, Clint Eastwood—comes along and rescues it for art as well as box office. Western film historian and scholar Edward Buscombe, writing in The BFI Companion to the Western in 1988, not a prolific period for the Western, wrote: 'So far the genre has always managed to renew itself ... The Western may surprise us yet.' And so it is currently doing on our screens in two major inflections of the genre: the Australian/UK co-production, John Hillcoat's The Proposition, set in [65] BRIAN MCFARLANE outback Australia in the 1880s; and the US film, Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, set largely in Wyoming in 1963, lurching forwards to the 1980s. It was ever a char acteristic of the Western, and a truism of writing about it, that it reflected more about its time of production than of the period in which it was set, that it was a matter of America dreaming about its agrarian past. -

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study According to Rachman (1997:793) obsessions are defined as “instructive, repetitive thoughts, images or impulses that are unacceptable and unwanted and give rise to subjective resistance the necessary and sufficient conditions are intrusiveness, internal attribution, unwanted and difficulty of control” (Rachman & Hodgson, 1980:251). Typical obsessions include fear of contamination as from handshakes, worry about leaving things in their proper order, persistent doubts about one's responsible behavior, scary images involving violent acts, and images of sexual acts. People with obsessions may find themselves acting in compulsive ways in largely useless efforts to relieve the anxiety associated with their persistent, unpleasant thoughts. Others suffering from obsessions may try very hard to control or ignore them. It is important to note that worries about daily concerns paying bills, studying for exams, keeping a job, interpersonal relationships are not obsessions. Although they can occasionally be carried to obsessive lengths, these concerns can change with circumstances and, in most cases be controlled, with planning, effort, and action. Obsessions relate to problems that most 1 2 people would consider far removed from normal, daily events and concerns. A literary work can be defined as a branch of literature dealing with words as raw material to create a picture, an idea or a story in a meaningful pattern. Yet words, being the backbone of the pattern, are not really of great importance if they aren’t carefully manipulated into good syntactically structured sentences so can deliver the target idea in an artistic way. It is meant that the work is valued as work of art with a literary style which is, of course, different from that we use in colloquy. -

Speculative Topography: The Fantastical Overdetermination of Space in Iain Sinclair’s Early Writing David Anderson (University College London) The Literary London Journal, Volume 16, Number 1 (Autumn 2020) The speed and scale of Iain Sinclair’s literary production, its constant turns and returns to the same locations and preoccupations, sometimes seems deliberately designed to ward off scholars – or, to use a term more appropriate to Sinclair’s pedestrian forays into London and its environs, to outpace them. And yet, at the same time, his work also seems to lend itself to research by depicting a city extraordinarily freighted with signification, bristling with meaning: a fantastically overdetermined space that demands explanation. This strange, even radical ambivalence, which seems to mirror Sinclair’s slyly paradoxical cultivation of an urgent pedestrianism, is in fact partly fuelled by the presence of an unconventional brand of highly eccentric scholarship within Sinclair’s own work: above all, his discovery in the early 1970s of a text entitled Prehistoric London: Its Mounts and Circles, written by Elizabeth Oke Gordon. A look at this wilfully archaic volume – which even on its original publication in 1914 must have seemed somewhat untimely – suggests ways that Sinclair’s distinctive articulation of London and his journeys through it emerged from a disorientating blend of first-hand exploration and abstruse amateur archaeology: a method built on his reading of Gordon’s arcane, speculative, even bizarre account of London’s supposed mythic topography and hidden histories. As soon becomes clear, Gordon’s ‘study’ provided a foundation stone for the later author’s own plunges into the city as both a physical and textual space. -

Firstly, I would like to point you in the direction of a couple of the statistics that I used in my oral evidence that were not in my written submission. I spoke about social care provided to the over 65s only accounting for around half of total social care spend; these numbers are from the below table:1 LA spending (£million 2016-17 prices) Real per-capita spending change 2009-10 2015-16 Total adult (65+) 553 554 -12.16% social care Total adult (16-64) 564 563 +0.69% social care I stated in my oral evidence that demographics only accounted for a small amount of the increase in costs of health and social care services. This is evidenced in reports by the Office for Budget Responsibility2 and the OECD.3 In terms of the financial pressures that there are on health and social care services, I have identified the following three areas: 1. Improved Quality Improving the quality of the care provided will inherently bring financial pressures alongside it. We are now seeing better standards of care, the introduction of staffing ratios, new training requirements and the registration of social care workers. -
