  • The YA Novel in the Digital Age by Amy Bright a Thesis
The YA Novel in the Digital Age by Amy Bright A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Amy Bright, 2016 Abstract Recent research by Neilsen reports that adult readers purchase 80% of all young adult novels sold, even though young adult literature is a category ostensibly targeted towards teenage readers (Gilmore). More than ever before, young adult (YA) literature is at the center of some of the most interesting literary conversations, as writers, readers, and publishers discuss its wide appeal in the twenty-first century. My dissertation joins this vibrant discussion by examining the ways in which YA literature has transformed to respond to changing social and technological contexts. Today, writing, reading, and marketing YA means engaging with technological advances, multiliteracies and multimodalities, and cultural and social perspectives. A critical examination of five YA texts – Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, Libba Bray’s Beauty Queens, Daniel Handler’s Why We Broke Up, John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, and Jaclyn Moriarty’s The Ghosts of Ashbury High – helps to shape understanding about the changes and the challenges facing this category of literature as it responds in a variety of ways to new contexts. In the first chapter, I explore the history of YA literature in order to trace the ways that this literary category has changed in response to new conditions to appeal to and serve a new generation of readers, readers with different experiences, concerns, and contexts over time.

Y Pwyllgor Cyllid | Finance Committee FIN(5)-12-18 PTN2 Simon Thomas AM Chair Finance Committee National Assembly for Wales Cardiff CF99 1NA 27 April 2018 Cost of Caring for an Ageing Population: Supplementary Evidence Dear Simon, As I mentioned during my oral evidence session to the Committee on 19 April 2018, I would like to provide you with some additional information that I wasn’t able to share with you during the session. Firstly, I would like to point you in the direction of a couple of the statistics that I used in my oral evidence that were not in my written submission. I spoke about social care provided to the over 65s only accounting for around half of total social care spend; these numbers are from the below table:1 LA spending (£million 2016-17 prices) Real per-capita spending change 2009-10 2015-16 Total adult (65+) 553 554 -12.16% social care Total adult (16-64) 564 563 +0.69% social care I stated in my oral evidence that demographics only accounted for a small amount of the increase in costs of health and social care services. This is evidenced in reports by the Office for Budget Responsibility2 and the OECD.3 In terms of the financial pressures that there are on health and social care services, I have identified the following three areas: 1. Improved Quality Improving the quality of the care provided will inherently bring financial pressures alongside it. We are now seeing better standards of care, the introduction of staffing ratios, new training requirements and the registration of social care workers.

REPRESENTATIONS LIST Application No: 051731 Application Date: 22 February 2021 Licence Type: Premises Licence WITH Alcohol Licence No: N/A Application Type:New Application Premises: Mickey's Beach Bar & Restaurant and Cafe Patisserie Glacerie Unit 1, Sideshore, Queens Drive, EXMOUTH, EX8 2GD. Applicant: Maer Beach Limited 5 Barnfield Crescent, EXETER, Devon, EX1 1QT. Person making Representation: Mary Nash Representation Accepted: Representation has been accepted Reason: Details: This application for for sales of alcohol and food from the premises now named as Mike's Beach Bar and Restaurant is a cause for grave concern. I wish to object to lateness of the opening hours as stated in their application both on the grounds of public safety and public nuisance. Public Safety: Late night drinking in such close proximity to a non-life guarded dangerous area of the beach would be an accident waiting to happen. Public Nuisance: This is a quiet residential area. At night we can clearly hear the familiar sounds of the sea. The sound of being woken by late night drinkers being turned out at 2.30 am is not acceptable. Any loud party type noises after 11.30pm would prevent me from sleeping peacefully in Trefusis Terrace. Last orders for food at 10.30pm and alcohol at 11.00pm would prevent any late night issues. Those hours would be more in keeping with the licence which is operated at the neighbouring Ocean premises. The terms of the Ocean licence are acceptable and have not caused local residents a problem. The police are already aware of problems with antisocial behaviour in this area.
