David Michael Huxley Dance Studies in the UK 1974-1984: A historical consideration of the boundaries of research and the dancer’s voice The first Study of Dance Conference was held at the University of Leeds in 1981. The following year saw the First Conference of British Dance Scholars in London, leading to the inauguration of the Society for Dance Research and then the publication of its journal, Dance Research. Since 1984, the field of dance studies in the UK has both developed and been debated. My paper draws on archival and other sources to reconsider this period historically. With the benefit of current ideas of what constitutes dance, practice, research, and history, it is possible to consider the early years of UK Dance Studies afresh. In the twenty-first-century there are some accepted notions of dance studies. I would argue that they have established boundaries, but that these are often unstated. The period is re-examined with a view to uncovering a broader, and indeed more inclusive, idea of dance studies. In this, attention is given to the researches of practitioners in the period; both published, including in New Dance, and unpublished. Whilst recognising the significant scholarship of the period, the paper also considers the ideas that dancers gave voice to. The analysis is taken further by considering the unexamined discourses that helped enable research in dance in the UK to develop in the way it did.

FitSteps was created by Ian Waite and Natalie Lowe of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ fame, together with ex ‘Strictly’ contestant and swimmer Mark Foster. Dances are based on ballroom and Latin steps and you don’t need a partner. As we go through the steps I will often give options of how to achieve them and you can choose whichever suits your needs and abilities. Please do take care, especially if you are new to fitness or have any reduced mobility or health conditions. I cannot be in the room with you, so it is your responsibility to ensure you keep within your own abilities and the space around you is clear and safe. Ensure you stay hydrated, drink between dances and any time you feel you need to. If you feel light-headed or the need to take a break then do so, you know what is best for you.

    Premium Rate Telephony and Associated Issues Final Report from the BBC Director General to the BBC Trust, May 2007 1. Introduction 1.1 Context Following a number of revelations and resulting investigations into broadcasters’ use of premium rate telephony, allegations about BBC activity in this area surfaced in late February of this year. Reports were first published in the News of the World on 25 February about some pre-recorded editions of Saturday Kitchen. These were followed by a contact from a member of the public to the BBC on 9 March regarding an edition of Blue Peter broadcast in November 2006. On 17 March the Daily Mirror made further allegations about audience deception in relation to a second children’s programme, Smile. This report seeks to provide for the Trust an overview of the issues surrounding the BBC’s use of premium rate phonelines and the particular incidents which have been investigated. It also provides an account of the actions that have and will be taken by the BBC in relation to the various concerns which have surfaced. 1.2 Investigative Work Undertaken The BBC has investigated each set of allegations as they have arisen and where issues have been identified has sought to address them comprehensively.
