The contemporary state of wargaming demands errata be published online, but we feel it desirable to provide more than just corrections. Games such as this are not mere games, like Sorry, or Monopoly, or The Settlers of Catan, they blur the categorical boundary separating game from history. The consumer of this kind of game, given the product’s complexity and claim to historical verity (the latter perhaps quixotic in the case of Skies), deserves more. To that end, this document includes errata, clarications, and more extensive design notes. For those brave souls new to Skies Above the Reich, and perhaps even new to this genre of game, we include an illustrated sample Mission. It should help the player visualize how the game is played. We also present two variants that may be added to the game. The focus of Skies Above the Reich is on the bomber formation, and battles with escort, and escort behavior in general, was abstracted in order to maintain that focus. One variant unpacks that abstraction by inserting a Formation Intercept Sequence before the start of a Mission. The player’s ghters vector to their interception with the bomber formation, and may encounter enemy escort along the way, thus providing a more interesting and clear picture of escort behavior.

    Sabin Why the Allies Won the Air War, 1939-1945 研究会記録 Why the Allies Won the Air War, 1939-1945 Philip Sabin For nearly three decades, first in Queens’ College Cambridge and then in King’s College London, I shared a college with Richard Overy, one of the most eminent historians of World War Two. The title of this paper melds the titles of two of Overy’s most well-known books – The Air War, 1939-1945 from 1980, and Why the Allies Won from 1995.1 My aim is to review his arguments after a generation of further scholarship, and to see whether his insights retain their validity today.2 Two fundamental and inter-related scholarly debates may be identified with regard to the overall issue of Allied victory in World War Two. One concerns whether (as Paul Kennedy and John Ellis have suggested) Axis defeat was all but inevitable because of the overwhelming economic and industrial advantages of the Allies, or whether, as Overy himself argued strongly in Why the Allies Won, ‘There was nothing preordained about Allied success’ and ‘Materially rich, but divided, demoralised, and poorly led, the Allied coalition would have lost the war’.3 The second, related, debate concerns which aspect of this massive struggle was the most decisive. Norman Davies argued in 2006 that the devastating and bloody land war between the Axis powers and their totalitarian rivals in the USSR was the key to Axis defeat, and that the efforts of the Western democracies (especially in Europe) were little more than a sideshow in comparison.4 Phillips O’Brien, by contrast, argued in 2015 that the war was decided primarily by production, technology and economics rather than by blood-letting among massed armies, and that this made the air and sea contest in which the Western powers achieved growing dominance the most decisive aspect of the struggle, to the point that 1 R J Overy, The Air War, 1939-1945, (paperback edition, London: 1987), and Why the Allies Won, (London: 1995).

The "Blue Ribbon" Strategic Bombing Survey Team was tasked to enter those areas struck by our strategic bombers as soon as possible after the bombing to assess the effectiveness of the bombing effort and its contribution to the Allied victory. The result of each survey was a detailed, multivolume report that examines every aspect of the bombing campaigns. The Summary Reports reprinted herein are essentially executive summaries of the entire study. Harmon, the Academy's first superintendent (1954-1956) and a serious student of military history. General Harmon believed that history should play a vital role in the new Air Force Academy curriculum. Meeting with the History Department on one occasion, he described General George S. Patton, Jr.'s visit to the West Point library before departing for the North African campaign. In a flurry of activity Patton and the librarians combed the West Point holdings for historical works that might be useful to him in the coming months. Impressed by Patton's regard for history and personally convinced of history's great value, General Harmon believed that cadets should study the subject during each of their four years at the Academy. General Harmon fell ill with cancer soon after launching the Air Force Academy at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver in 1954. He died in February 1957. He had completed a monumental task over the preceding decade as the chief planner for the new service academy and as its first superintendent.

Adolf Eichmann has been brought to trial in this Court on charges of unsurpassed gravity - charges of crimes against the Jewish People, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The period of the crimes ascribed to him, and their historical background, is that of the Hitler regime in Germany and in Europe, and the counts of the indictment encompass the catastrophe which befell the Jewish People during that period - a story of bloodshed and suffering which will be remembered to the end of time. This is not the first time that the Holocaust has been discussed in court proceedings. It was dealt with extensively at the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg during the Trial of the Major War Criminals, and also at several of the trials which followed; but this time it has occupied the central place in the Court proceedings, and it is this fact which has distinguished this trial from those which preceded it. Hence also the trend noticed during and around the trial, to widen its range. The desire was felt - understandable in itself - to give, within the trial, a comprehensive and exhaustive historical description of events which occurred during the Holocaust, and in so doing, to emphasize also the inconceivable feats of heroism performed by ghetto-fighters, by those who mutinied in the camps, and by Jewish partisans.
