The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. Almost half of the remaining old growth redwood forests Blechnaceae – Deer Fern Family are protected in these four parks. -

Mississippi Natural Heritage Program Special Plants - Tracking List -2018
MISSISSIPPI NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM SPECIAL PLANTS - TRACKING LIST -2018- Approximately 3300 species of vascular plants (fern, gymnosperms, and angiosperms), and numerous non-vascular plants may be found in Mississippi. Many of these are quite common. Some, however, are known or suspected to occur in low numbers; these are designated as species of special concern, and are listed below. There are 495 special concern plants, which include 4 non- vascular plants, 28 ferns and fern allies, 4 gymnosperms, and 459 angiosperms 244 dicots and 215 monocots. An additional 100 species are designated “watch” status (see “Special Plants - Watch List”) with the potential of becoming species of special concern and include 2 fern and fern allies, 54 dicots and 44 monocots. This list is designated for the primary purposes of : 1) in environmental assessments, “flagging” of sensitive species that may be negatively affected by proposed actions; 2) determination of protection priorities of natural areas that contain such species; and 3) determination of priorities of inventory and protection for these plants, including the proposed listing of species for federal protection. Managing Hardwood Stands for Acorn Production One of the questions natural resource professionals who work in hardwoods regularly encounter is, “How do I increase acorn production in my forest?” While management of an existing hardwood stand for acorn production is not an overly complicated process, the current year’s acorn crop cannot be influenced. Land managers’ influence over acorn production is a lengthy process and must be tackled months or years before significant increases will be observed. Oak species are one of the most economically and ecologically important species found in the hardwood forests of Mississippi. In addition to providing high- quality, valuable wood, oaks serve critical roles for Figure 1. Although older stands of oaks can provide cavities for a wide range of wildlife species, many people are more interested in the fruit of these species. Hard mast is a term that applies to the fruit (nuts) of oak (acorns), hickory, pecan, walnut, and beech trees. Hard mast is an important food source used by a variety of wildlife species, including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, squirrels, ducks, and many nongame birds and mammals. While available primarily during fall and winter months, acorns and nuts are an important source of food for wildlife due to their widespread occurrence, palatability, nutritive quality, and availability during a time when other food sources are not available. Despite phylogenetic and taxonomic progress on the genus over the past 45 years, classification of species at the subsectional level remains unchanged since the early treatments by WL Trelease, AA Camus, and CH Muller. In recent work, we used a RAD-seq based phylogeny including 250 species sampled from throughout the Americas and Eurasia to reconstruct the timing and biogeography of the North American oak radiation. This work demonstrates that the North American oak flora comprises mostly regional species radiations with limited phylogenetic affinities to Mexican clades, and two sister group connections to Eurasia. Using this framework, we describe the regional patterns of oak diversity within North America and formally classify 62 species into nine major North American subsections within sections Lobatae (the red oaks) and Quercus (the Citation: Manos, P.S.; Hipp, A.L.
