A timeless and bitingly funny modern classic, Cloud Nine has not been seen in a major Betty New York production since 1981; when it ran for over two years. Clive’s Wife Edward Cloud Nine is a hysterical, in-your-face, energetic, and Clive’s Son occasionally dark play that confronts traditional ideas of gender, sexuality, and patriarchy. Act one begins in Africa under British Victoria Clive’s Daughter Imperialist rule in 1879 where we first meet Clive, a domineering husband, father, and master. Through his heavy handed approach Harry Bagley in his many roles, Clive is both a literal and a metaphorical An Explorer representative of the British Empire’s intent to “civilize” the natives Mrs. Saunders through his treatment of his subservient family. His wife, Betty, A Widow is played by a man. His son, Edward, is played by a woman. His servant, Joshua, is an African native, but is played by a Caucasian Lin A Lesbian actor. These casting choices create a visual analogy to challenge the conventions of the time and to reveal underlying truths Martin about each character. As each actor is introduced they quickly Victoria’s Husband betray their customary roles and expose how tradition and Ellen convention can impact the individual and their contributions Edward’s Governess to the society they must operate within. Gerry Act Two opens in 1979 London, which seems to be an Edward’s Lover alternate universe operating within a very different set of Cathy societal norms. While not as dictatorial a society at first glance, Lin’s Young Daughter the characters must still navigate the aftermath of the dark, Maud patriarchal, sexually oppressive world from which they come. Clive’s Mother-In-Law Continuing in the style of shifted conventions, despite nearly 100 years passing from Act I to Act II, the characters have only Joshua aged 25 years. Throughout Act II, we observe the characters Clive’s African Servant, Played By A Caucasian Actor challenging their own ideas of social mores, examining the relationships in their lives, and searching for acceptance both inside themselves, and in society. August Wilson1 On 2 October 2005 August Wilson died at the Swedish Medical Centre in Seattle. It was just eight months after the death of another American playwright, Arthur Miller. They came out of different worlds. Miller was descended from immigrants on both sides of the family, Jews who went to America to escape persecution and seek their fortune. And if they sub- sequently lost the fortune they made, they nonetheless never lost belief in the system that had redeemed them from a far worse fate. To be sure, they encountered prejudice, but even so they slid with some ease into an Amer- ica which swiftly bore the impress of European Jews as they emerged as entrepreneurs, artists, scientists and intellectuals surprisingly ready to inter- pret America to itself.

Weeks before the production was to travel from an acclaimed run in London at the Royal Court Theatre to the East Village for a stint at the Workshop, the theatre (depending on whom you believe) either postponed or cancelled the play. Jim Nicola, the artistic director of New York Theatre Workshop, told the Guardian: ‘In our pre-production planning and our talking around and listening in our communities in New York, what we heard was that after Ariel Sharon’s illness and the election of Hamas, we had a very edgy situation. In this dissertation, I examined current models of new play development in the United States. Looking at Lincoln Center Theater and Signature Theatre, I considered major non-profit theatres that seek to create life-long connections to legendary playwrights. I studied new play development at a major regional theatre, Denver Center Theatre Company, and showed how the use of commissions contribute to its new play development program, the Colorado New Play Summit. I also examined a new model of play development that has arisen in recent years—the use of small black box theatres housed in large non-profit theatre institutions.
