A timeless and bitingly funny modern classic, Cloud Nine has not been seen in a major Betty New York production since 1981; when it ran for over two years. Clive’s Wife Edward Cloud Nine is a hysterical, in-your-face, energetic, and Clive’s Son occasionally dark play that confronts traditional ideas of gender, sexuality, and patriarchy. Act one begins in Africa under British Victoria Clive’s Daughter Imperialist rule in 1879 where we first meet Clive, a domineering husband, father, and master. Through his heavy handed approach Harry Bagley in his many roles, Clive is both a literal and a metaphorical An Explorer representative of the British Empire’s intent to “civilize” the natives Mrs. Saunders through his treatment of his subservient family. His wife, Betty, A Widow is played by a man. His son, Edward, is played by a woman. His servant, Joshua, is an African native, but is played by a Caucasian Lin A Lesbian actor. These casting choices create a visual analogy to challenge the conventions of the time and to reveal underlying truths Martin about each character. Clive’s Mother-In-Law Continuing in the style of shifted conventions, despite nearly 100 years passing from Act I to Act II, the characters have only Joshua aged 25 years. Throughout Act II, we observe the characters Clive’s African Servant, Played By A Caucasian Actor challenging their own ideas of social mores, examining the relationships in their lives, and searching for acceptance both inside themselves, and in society. Weeks before the production was to travel from an acclaimed run in London at the Royal Court Theatre to the East Village for a stint at the Workshop, the theatre (depending on whom you believe) either postponed or cancelled the play. Jim Nicola, the artistic director of New York Theatre Workshop, told the Guardian: ‘In our pre-production planning and our talking around and listening in our communities in New York, what we heard was that after Ariel Sharon’s illness and the election of Hamas, we had a very edgy situation. Looking at Lincoln Center Theater and Signature Theatre, I considered major non-profit theatres that seek to create life-long connections to legendary playwrights. I studied new play development at a major regional theatre, Denver Center Theatre Company, and showed how the use of commissions contribute to its new play development program, the Colorado New Play Summit. I also examined a new model of play development that has arisen in recent years—the use of small black box theatres housed in large non-profit theatre institutions.
