Boughton 3 MUSEUM and PRESERVED AIRCRAFT IN AUSTRALIA Since this Society produced the first edition of this survey in 1968, there has been an increased awareness in the need to preserve aircraft for historical and educational purposes. This has resulted in additions to some collections, changes between various collections, and the establishment of new exhibits. At present none of these aircraft have cur rent certificates of airworthiness but a few are being restored with the view to licensing for demonstration purposes. There are many aircraft of historical Interest currently airworthy in Australia and several others which are being rebuilt for flying. These do not fall within the scope of this survey, while aircraft which are abandoned and/or derelict have similarly not been included as they have no definite future. Not all of the machines and equipment listed have been com pletely restored for display. The serial/registration listed is at present carried by the aircraft and in some cases might not be its actual identity (these machines are marked with an asterisk). Some machines listed are privately owned and are not on public display but may be available for viewing on request. It should be noted that aircraft built in Australia by the local De Havllland company have been listed as De Havilland (Aust.) Peter Yealands Classic Fighters Album Loburn Abbey Fly-in 1 RecWings – May 2017 May 2017 May 2017 Oily Rags Brian Greenwood This is not, as you might expect, another safety-inspired message on the dangers of oily rags accumulating in the corner of the hangar (although it should be; these things can spontaneously combust) but more of a comment about personal finances. The title came from a farmer I once knew, who stated that ‘he didn’t actually have much money, he ran the place on the sniff of an oily rag’. I took it at face value, the helicopter, vintage aircraft, boats, and modern farm machinery might all have been financed to the eyeballs. Another friend retorted with “yes, but your oily rag contains a lot more oil than mine”. It was imitation envy for the sake of good humour. It got me to thinking about personal finances and flying, we’re all in a different place in life and each has a different story. Some of us have multiple aircraft, including some very expensive pieces of kit. Others are managing to do the job for not much money at all (comparatively speaking – it is aviation, after all!) by using club aircraft or more basic technology. Many of us are forgoing other luxuries such as overseas travel or even retirement savings (try not to do that), and not one of us are truly wealthy. Probably - remember there’s only one way of making anything aircraft related more expensive. Remove the word “Aviation” from the title Vale Mike Dimmock and replace it with “Wedding”.

  • Connie Returns! Caribou Flight to Broome and Back
Connie Returns! After an absence of over five months that left some people wondering if she had been retired to make way for a Boeing 707, Connie made a spectacular return to her home at Illawarra Regional Airport on Saturday 26 August. Her return generated almost as much excitement as her original February 1996 arrival in Sydney from the USA! During her absence Connie was professionally repainted and we are extremely grateful to Douglas Aerospace of Wagga Wagga for what has been a huge contribution to the preservation of this icon of the airline industry. The new coat of paint has Connie looking almost like she had just rolled off the production line and corrects some details of the colour scheme to better represent the significance of this aircraft type to Australian aviation. The return flight from Wagga Wagga took less than fifty minutes. Perhaps the shiny new paint scheme contributed by reducing the aircraft’s drag! Caribou Flight to Broome and Back In July, our Douglas C-47B Dakota, VH-EAF, embarked on a ‘round Australia tour. Unfortunately, a mechanical issue over the Nullarbor necessitated a landing at Forrest, Western Australia, an isolated airstrip in a town with a population of only 18. A recovery mission for the Dakota was mounted with one of our de Havilland DHC-4 Caribous. Having dropped off spares and engineers to enable the Dakota’s engineering issues to be addressed; the Caribou continued the originally planned ‘round Australia tour. Unfortunately the Caribou also experienced mechanical issues and was forced to return to Broome, Western Australia.

  • Former Point Cook RAAF Base
Victorian Heritage Database place details - 28/9/2021 Former Point Cook RAAF Base Location: Point Cook Road,, POINT COOK VIC 3030 - Property No B5572 Heritage Inventory (HI) Number: Listing Authority: HI Extent of Registration: 1 Statement of Significance: The former Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base at Point Cook, near Werribee, Victoria, is Australia's oldest operational airfield and one of few pre-WW2 airfields in Australia. As part of its history Point Cook has long been recognised as the birthplace of Australian military aviation (1913), and subsequently of the RAAF (1921). Point Cook was the place where many later personalities in both our military and civil aviation fields first learned to fly, where a number of historic flights in the 1920s began, and where civil aviation itself underwent much of its earliest development. As a national icon, RAAF Point Cook's significance is unequalled. The classification includes all parts of the airbase associated with its RAAF aviation history, including post WW2 development such as the chapel with its aircraft motifs, and c.1960s buildings. This former RAAF Point Cook Air Base, including the airfield and runways, in being recognised as the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force and perhaps the oldest and certainly most intact, longest serving military airfield in the world, is of historic, architectural, scientific/technical and social significance at the national and international levels. Architectural: Australia's earliest military aviation buildings located at Point Cook are amongst the world's oldest of this type. The significance of the early Point Cook architecture is reflected in its strong influence on later RAAF buildings in other parts of Australia, which virtually replicate Point Cook's building types.

Full details of additional Air-Britain books and more detailed descriptions are shown online AUSTER – the Company and the Aircraft Tom Wenham, Rod Simpson & Malcolm Fillmore NEW Auster Aircraft has a long and distinguished history, starting with its formation as British Taylorcraft in 1938 and end - ing with its absorption into Beagle Aircraft in 1960.The Auster was not, strictly, a new design since it had its origins in the American Taylorcraft two seater. However, World War II gave it a welcome momentum which led to more than 1,600 artillery spotter Austers being built for the British and other air forces. The Rearsby factory was at maximum production during the war - but, as with all other aircraft manufacturing plants, it found a sudden collapse in military orders when peace came. However, there were returning flyers keen to keep their skills alive and the Autocrat and its successors were successful, not only in the UK but also across the world. Using the same basic airframe, the Auster constantly changed its shape and the 180hp Husky of 1960 was a very different animal from the original 55hp Taylorcraft Model C. Austers were sold all over the world and were used for many tasks including crop spraying, aerial advertising and joyriding. The company also developed new models including the very successful AOP.9, and the less successful Agricola, Atlantic and Avis.

The History of Air Transport KOSTAS IATROU Dedicated to my wife Evgenia and my sons George and Yianni Copyright © 2020: Kostas Iatrou First Edition: July 2020 Published by: Hermes – Air Transport Organisation Graphic Design – Layout: Sophia Darviris Material (either in whole or in part) from this publication may not be published, photocopied, rewritten, transferred through any electronical or other means, without prior permission by the publisher. Preface ommercial aviation recently celebrated its first centennial. Over the more than 100 years since the first Ctake off, aviation has witnessed challenges and changes that have made it a critical component of mod- ern societies. Most importantly, air transport brings humans closer together, promoting peace and harmo- ny through connectivity and social exchange. A key role for Hermes Air Transport Organisation is to contribute to the development, progress and promo- tion of air transport at the global level. This would not be possible without knowing the history and evolu- tion of the industry. Once a luxury service, affordable to only a few, aviation has evolved to become accessible to billions of peo- ple. But how did this evolution occur? This book provides an updated timeline of the key moments of air transport. It is based on the first aviation history book Hermes published in 2014 in partnership with ICAO, ACI, CANSO & IATA. I would like to express my appreciation to Professor Martin Dresner, Chair of the Hermes Report Committee, for his important role in editing the contents of the book. I would also like to thank Hermes members and partners who have helped to make Hermes a key organisa- tion in the air transport field.
