  • From the Late Cretaceous of Brazil and the Phylogeny of Baurusuchidae
A New Baurusuchid (Crocodyliformes, Mesoeucrocodylia) from the Late Cretaceous of Brazil and the Phylogeny of Baurusuchidae Felipe C. Montefeltro1*, Hans C. E. Larsson2, Max C. Langer1 1 Departamento de Biologia, Faculdade de Filosofia, Cieˆncias e Letras de Ribeira˜o Preto – Universidade de Sa˜o Paulo, Ribeira˜o Preto, Brazil, 2 Redpath Museum, McGill University, Montre´al, Canada Abstract Background: Baurusuchidae is a group of extinct Crocodyliformes with peculiar, dog-faced skulls, hypertrophied canines, and terrestrial, cursorial limb morphologies. Their importance for crocodyliform evolution and biogeography is widely recognized, and many new taxa have been recently described. In most phylogenetic analyses of Mesoeucrocodylia, the entire clade is represented only by Baurusuchus pachecoi, and no work has attempted to study the internal relationships of the group or diagnose the clade and its members. Methodology/Principal Findings: Based on a nearly complete skull and a referred partial skull and lower jaw, we describe a new baurusuchid from the Vale do Rio do Peixe Formation (Bauru Group), Late Cretaceous of Brazil. The taxon is diagnosed by a suite of characters that include: four maxillary teeth, supratemporal fenestra with equally developed medial and anterior rims, four laterally visible quadrate fenestrae, lateral Eustachian foramina larger than medial Eustachian foramen, deep depression on the dorsal surface of pterygoid wing. The new taxon was compared to all other baurusuchids and their internal relationships were examined based on the maximum parsimony analysis of a discrete morphological data matrix. Conclusion: The monophyly of Baurusuchidae is supported by a large number of unique characters implying an equally large morphological gap between the clade and its immediate outgroups.

The fossil comes from a fine sandstone sequence of Adamantina Formation, General Salgado County, São Paulo State. The sedimentary sequence where it was found, located in Fazenda Buriti, is considered Turonian-Santonian in age. The described species – Baurusuchus salgadoensis sp. nov. – is a baurusuchid with an antorbital fenestra, double external nares with a bony septum, two well-fused supraorbitals, the supratemporal fenestrae larger than the orbits and a quadrangular-shaped laterotemporal fenestra. The position of the external nares, located on anterior and terminal portion of the rostrum together with the theropod-like lateral compression of the snout and teeth are indicators that Baurusuchus salgadoensis was a terrestrial crocodyliform. This was a carnivorous species and the lateral compression of the rostrum could be interpreted as a mechanism to increase the skull resistance forces during biting.

In recent years, many new species have been described and understanding of the history and relationships of this fauna has been greatly advanced by molecular studies, but very little is known of the fossil history of frogs on the island. Beelzebufo ampinga, the first named pre-Holocene frog from Madagascar, was described in 2008 on the basis of numerous disarticulated cranial and postcranial elements from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Maevarano Formation of Madagascar.

File S1. Documentation, sensitivity analyses, supplementary trees and tables. Section A. Three-dimensional digital skeletal model of Beelzebufo ampinga. Description and Rationale The three-dimensional digital skeletal model of Beelzebufo ampinga uses only elements from Beelzebufo and from the postcranial skeleton of a single individual of Ceratophrys aurita (LACM 163430). The goal of the reconstruction was to create a conservative, repeatable, and defensible model that relied on a minimum of assumptions for and alterations to the model animal skeleton LACM 163430 beyond an initial calibration and, aside from mirroring and filling in missing spaces in the tooth row, a minimum of alteration to specimens of Beelzebufo. No non-Beelzebufo material was used in the cranial model as it was originally constructed, but for aesthetic reasons a re-scaled and re-proportioned surface of the jaws of Ceratophrys aurita (LACM 163430) was added prior to imaging for the manuscript for Figures 1, 2, and 5 (see below). For alterations that were necessary, we adhered whenever possible to an assumption of isometric shape change, not for biological reasons but rather to keep any shape change as conservative and non-arbitrary as possible. All size and shape changes were documented and comparisons with original, non-altered materials as simple as a side-by-side file comparison. All shape positions exist in a single coordinate space and can be easily recorded, and differences in hypothetical positions tracked exactly. The relative completeness of FMNH PR 2512, as well as it being the only recovered specimen with both crania and postcrania, made it the best candidate for an accurate composite skeletal reconstruction.

RUANE* ,R.A.PYRONà & F. T. BURBRINK* *Department of Biology, The College of Staten Island, The City University of New York, New York, NY, USA Department of Biology, The Graduate School and University Center, The City University of New York, New York, NY, USA àDepartment of Ecology and Evolution, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY, USA Keywords: Abstract Beelzebufo; The placement of fossil calibrations is ideally based on the phylogenetic Ceratophrys; analysis of extinct taxa. Another source of information is the temporal dating error; variance for a given clade implied by a particular constraint when combined divergence time estimation; with other, well-supported calibrations. For example, the frog Beelzebufo fossil calibration; ampinga from the Cretaceous of Madagascar has been hypothesized to be a Gondwanaland; crown-group member of the New World subfamily Ceratophryinae, which Madagascar. would support a Late Cretaceous connection with South America. However, phylogenetic analyses and molecular divergence time estimates based on other fossils do not support this placement. We derive a metric, Dt, to quantify temporal divergence among chronograms and find that errors resulting from mis-specified calibrations are localized when additional nodes throughout the tree are properly calibrated. The use of temporal information from molecular data can further assist in testing phylogenetic hypotheses regarding the placement of extinct taxa. Estimating the ages of clades by integrating fossil data supported constraints placed throughout the tree. Using and molecular phylogenies has become commonplace other calibrations, one can predict the age of the targeted and expands the range of evolutionary hypotheses that node for the uncertain fossil.
