(Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures Octet at UMass Bowker Auditorium) Hailed by the NY Times as “a pioneer in world music” Adam Rudolph’s expansive vision of musical expression cannot even be limited by a phrase as broad as that. Rudolph first achieved international recognition through his long associations with two of the most musically diverse contemporary masters - the late, iconoclastic trumpeter Don Cherry and the legendary multi-reedist and UMass faculty member (a relationship that is still intact). Grounded in the American improvisational tradition, Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures Octet embraces music forms, languages, instrumentation, and cosmologies of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the African Diaspora. Decades of performance and research into these music cultures have given the artists the background and experience to create a unique and unprecedented improvisational art form. The ensemble brings its unique sound to the Fine Arts Center’s Bowker Auditorium on Thursday, February 28 at 7:30pm. The octet features cornetist/flugelhornist Graham Haynes, multi-reedman Ned Rothenberg, guitarist Kenny Wessel, bassist Shanir Blumenkrantz, trap drummer , oudist/percussionist Brahim Fribgane, the Bansuri flutes and reeds of Steve Gorn and Rudolph. This concert is a co- presentation of the Magic Triangle Series and the Center Series. Since 1991 Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures has performed at many major festivals and concert venues in both Europe and the United States. In addition, each member has

-MORE- concertized extensively throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia: their collective background spans a wide range of musical experiences, including performances with world music ensembles, 20th century chamber groups and leading artists in the jazz and rhythm & blues fields. The concert repertoire consists of original compositions by Rudolph that serve as a basis for improvisational dialogue. Originally from Chicago, composer and handrummer/percussionist Adam Rudolph has been hailed as “a pioneer in world music” by the New York Times and "a master percussionist” by Musician magazine. He has released over twenty recordings as a leader and appeared on numerous albums. For the past three decades he has performed extensively on concert stages and music festivals throughout North & South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Since the 1970’s Rudolph has been developing his unique syncretic approach to hand drumming in creative collaborations with outstanding artists of cross-cultural and improvised music, including: Don Cherry, Jon Hassel, , Hassan Hakmoun, L. Shankar, Omar Sosa, Wadada Leo Smith, and Pharaoh Sanders. In 1988 Rudolph began his association Yusef Lateef, with whom he has toured worldwide and recorded over 15 albums. Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures brand new recording, "Dream Garden" has just been released on Justin Time. Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures will perform on Thursday, February 28th at 7:30pm in Bowker Auditorium. Tickets are $15; youth 17 and under are $7 and Five College Students are $7.
