A.” Henderson (September 7, 1928—August 19, 2016), a seminal figure in the field of smallpox eradication. The Peace Corps is deeply appreciative of having had the opportunity to correspond with Dr. Henderson about the contributions of Peace Corps Volunteers and returned Volunteers within the context of the global eradication program. His charismatic leadership, tireless energy, and unflagging devotion to this program inspired countless public health workers around the world, including many of the returned Peace Corps Volunteers interviewed for this report. iii Acknowledgments In 1806, approximately 10 years after Dr. Edward Jenner conducted the first documented experiment with smallpox vaccination, laying the foundations of modern medicine, President Thomas Jefferson wrote to the English physician and scientist. • Reviews of the Ring Series the Ring Series, Also Known As “Ringu
Reviews of The Ring Series The Ring series, also known as “Ringu” or just “Ring”, is considered the founding factor in the west’s interest in Japanese horror and helped bridge the gap between international films. Based on a series of novels written by Koji Suzuki, the films revolve around a cursed videotape that kills anyone who watches it after seven days. Though the first book is a horrormystery, its two sequels Spiral and Loop are a medical mystery and a science fiction mystery respectively, all having intriguing storylines and plot twists that explore the sinister virus that originates from the videotape rather than a haunting curse. The Ring series has spawned a TV movie, two TV series, a fantastic Japanese film series, a crumby Korean film, and a respectible American movies too. And we’re gonna review all of them in this megareview. The franchise reflects a lot of modern fears in society – a fear of technology, urban legends, deadly illnesses (the AIDS scare in the 1980s and 1990s), unexpected pregnancy (as seen in Spiral), and the more traditional scares of evil and monsters. The main antagonist, Sadako Yamamura, takes a lot of inspiration from Japanese mythology and traditions. She is an “onryō”, or a vengeful female spirit, sporting the traditional long stringy hair and wears a white dress. Her origin is based on several folktales, most notably about a woman who is chucked down a well, where she dies and rises as a ghost. Obviously, there will be spoilers for the books and films throughout these minireviews, so be weary.

NO. 35 AUGUST 2019 Introduction Japan-South Korea Relations – A Downward Spiral More than “Just” Historical Issues Alexandra Sakaki The latest dispute between Japan and South Korea over compensation for former Korean forced labourers appears to be following a familiar pattern. Historical spats between two most important democracies in Northeast Asia – especially over the phase of Japanese colonial rule – are nothing new. But the tensions run deeper this time, and mutual mistrust has hit unseen heights. Japanese frustration has grown markedly, with Tokyo feeling duped by Seoul. While there have always been tussles over diverging interpretations of history, current domestic and regional develop- ments are an exacerbating factor. Now leaders in both capitals are publicly ques- tioning whether the other side still shares similar core values and strategic goals. The growing rift could easily affect the regional balance of power, weakening America’s position as ally of both Japan and South Korea. Japanese-South Korean relations are at their that South Korea had inadequately man- worst since normalisation in 1965. • Negative Staining Electron Microscope Protocol for Rash Illness
Negative Staining Electron Microscope Protocol for Rash Illness Introduction Electron microscopic (EM) visualization of negatively stained poxvirus virions was a valuable technique for confirming poxvirus infections during the smallpox eradication campaign. Historically, negative stain EM successfully detected poxvirus particles in approximately 95% of clinical specimens from patients with orthopoxvirus infections such as variola (smallpox)/monkeypox, and approximately 65% from patients with vaccinia (smallpox vaccine). In the event of a deliberate release of smallpox virus and subsequent human disease, or in generalized vaccinia infections resulting from vaccination, negatively stained preparations derived from lesions or scab material would again provide a valuable method for assisting in poxvirus diagnosis and/or ruling out other causes of rash illness. However, EM visualization of virions compatible with a poxvirus, by itself, would not constitute proof of a smallpox infection because different poxviruses, such as variola, vaccinia, monkeypox, and molluscum (molluscipoxvirus) viruses, are morphologically indistinguishable. While EM laboratories will be integral members of the biopreparedness team, several issues should be considered before an EM laboratory agrees to process specimens from patients with suspect poxvirus infection. First to consider is the diagnostic capabilities of the laboratory personnel, who should have experience with preparing negative stain EM grids, and, more importantly, must have experience with analyzing negative stain EM preparations to identify virus morphology, and to differentiate these from look-alikes and artifacts. Second, EM personnel who will handle specimens need to have been recently vaccinated, or have no contraindications to post-exposure vaccination. Lastly, the EM laboratory will need to have access to a BSL-3 containment facility, or a BSL-2 facility that can use BSL-3 precautions.
