Hassocks Neighbourhood Plan - Summary of Representations Ref# Cmt# Respondent Organisation Behalf Of Policy Page Type 38 1 Mr G H Marples Comments I have been a resident of Hassocks for over 40 years, have lived at the above address for the past two and a half and been a ward member for Hassocks on Mid Sussex District Council since 2003. I declare a prejudicial interest in respect of Site 4 in the draft plan as it backs on to the rear of my garden. As the Plan links site 4 to site 13 (Clayton Mills) I think I should declare an interest in the latter as well, even though it does not directly affect me and I would not normally have declared an interest in it. I support the inclusion of some of the sites proposed, recognising local housing need and the popularity of Hassocks with its sense of community, good schools and rail transport links. Roads are already congested but are probably no worse than many places. This is the price we pay for modern living, prosperity and high dependence on private cars. My comments on those sites which, for me, raise concerns are as follows: Land around Friars Oak, Sites 9 and 16. Until recently, I lived for over 40 years within half a mile of these sites. There is a “hybrid” planning application for circa 120 houses in this area currently being assessed but I support the draft plan’s recommendation that it should be designated as a Local Green Space for several reasons. In no order of significance, I have already expressed concerns about vehicular access to the proposed site off the A273 and the additional air quality issues the resultant traffic would create at Stonepound Crossroads, a short distance to the south. -

I am delighted to say that new for this year’s Guide we have Askham Hall Gardens in Penrith, Cumbria. These Grade II listed gardens are full of stunning features, including colourful terraces, a 230ft long double herbaceous border, unusual species of plants, formal lawns, kitchen gardens, woodland, meadows and ponds. Also new this year is Walsingham Abbey Grounds & Shirehall Museum, Norfolk. The garden and grounds surrounding Walsingham Abbey are famous for the spectacular ruins of the mediaeval Priory and place of pilgrimage. The Georgian Shirehall, for 200 years a courtroom but originally built as a pilgrim hostel, is now a Museum, and your way in to the Abbey Grounds. The New Forest Wildlife Park is featured for the first time in this year’s guide. Follow the woodland trails to see amazing animals in beautiful natural settings including bison, lynx wolves and wild boar. Village Voice Issue 50 Summer 2016 Thirty years at Ardingly It all started with three Wayfarers and six Topper sailing dinghies. So where are we now? Dinghy sailing continues to be the largest activity with children from 6 years old starting their sailing in Oppys, a stable boat like a bath tub! The courses follow the Royal Yachting Association schemes and progress from the beginning stages right through to Instructor. It is great to see young people develop from nervous beginners to become confident Instructors who have a passion for water sports and the joy of teaching. Adult courses continue to be popular, with most saying, ”I have always wanted to sail” or “I wish I had done this earlier.” So why not make time and do a course now? You will find it stimulating, exciting and relaxing. With courses in Windsurfing, Kayaking, and Canoeing there are lots of way to get afloat. Children’s parties are great fun - but don’t let the kids have all the fun any group of six can make their own party. If you are short of time just come and hire a sit-on-top kayak - there are singles or doubles and no past experience is needed. Get Mum and Dad to have a race against the kids or just have a paddle and enjoy the reservoir. Stand up paddle boards have been the big new thing and they are so popular, great as a stress buster, good for your core stability and, if you are well balanced, try doing yoga on them! That still leaves triathlon, rowing, fishing, raft building or just walking the dog, all on you door step. -
Keymer and Hassocks Grew Considerably After the Opening of the Railway in the 19Th Century
Mid Sussex Local Plan May 2004 Introduction 31.1 Originally two separate settlements, the village of Keymer and Hassocks grew considerably after the opening of the railway in the 19th century. It is a relatively compact settlement which lies very close to, and enjoys magnificent views of, the South Downs. It is surrounded by undulating agricultural land which provides an attractive rural setting. A major ridge line runs to the north, where the countryside is prominent in views from the railway. 31.2 To the south, the boundary of the built-up area is broadly contiguous with the boundary of the Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Most of the agricultural land to the south of the village is clearly visible as the foreground in views from vantage points on the Downs, and the designation reflects the importance of this vulnerable downland fringe area in the overall concept of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In December 2002, an order was made for the designation of a South Downs National Park. 31.3 The oldest part of the settlement is in Keymer in the vicinity of the Greyhound Public House. Several buildings in this area are listed as being of special architectural or historic interest, of which the Manor House is the oldest, dating from the 15th Century. To the north-east of the built-up area is Oldland Mill dating from the 17th Century. It is one of the few remaining Post Mills still standing in the south-east. 31.4 Within the settlement there is a good range of social and community facilities including a local shopping centre, secondary school, primary schools, health centre, community centre, recreational facilities and children’s play areas. -
