After converting the lord’s retainers and burning the Buddhist temple, Vilela built a Christian church under the invocation of “Todos os Santos” (All Saints). This temple was erected near Bernardo Nagasaki Jinzaemon Sumikage’s residence, whose castle was set upon a promontory on the foot of which laid Nagasaki (literal translation of “long cape”)1. If by this time the Great Ship from Macao was frequenting the nearby harbours of Shiki and Fukuda, it seems plausible that since the late 1560’s Nagasaki was already thought as a commercial centre by the Portuguese due to local political instability. Nagasaki’s foundation dates from 1571, the exact year in which the Great Ship under the Captain-Major Tristão Vaz da Veiga sailed there for the first time. -

The rebellions in those countries had much in common, but one of the most striking differences is the degree of violence inflicted by these popular movements on their opponents. Chinese popular rebels were much more likely to kill or injure others than their counterparts in Korea and Japan. Such differences seem to be closely associated with the question of whether the rebel forces fought due to conflicting interests within the polity, or were seeking to build a new kingdom by pursuing a newly-risen religion while rejecting the existing ruling system and ideology that legitimized it. This paper will examine how the rebel forces based the legitimacy of their actions in relation to each country’s “political culture.” While popular movements in the West or the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom were based on the idea that God was more powerful than the secular ruler, popular movements in Korea or Japan did not have a transcendent source of authority that was superior to the monarch. -

Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 2 Abstract This section discusses the complex psychological and philosophical reason for Shogun Yoshimune’s contrasting handlings of his two adopted daughters’ and his favorite son’s weddings. In my thinking, Yoshimune lived up to his philosophical principles by the illogical, puzzling treatment of the three weddings. We can witness the manifestation of his modest and frugal personality inherited from his ancestor Ieyasu, cohabiting with his strong but unconventional sense of obligation and respect for his benefactor Tsunayoshi. Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 1 Abstract In this study I shall discuss the marriage politics of Japan's early ruling families (mainly from the 6th to the 12th centuries) and the adaptation of these practices to new circumstances by the leaders of the following centuries. Marriage politics culminated with the founder of the Edo bakufu, the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). To show how practices continued to change, I shall discuss the weddings given by the fifth shogun sunaT yoshi (1646-1709) and the eighth shogun Yoshimune (1684-1751). The marriages of Tsunayoshi's natural and adopted daughters reveal his motivations for the adoptions and for his choice of the daughters’ husbands. The marriages of Yoshimune's adopted daughters show how his atypical philosophy of rulership resulted in a break with the earlier Tokugawa marriage politics. -

The Japanese Mission to Europe, 1582-1590: The Journey of Four Samurai Boys through Portugal, Spain and Italy, Global Oriental, Folkestone, 2005, 262 pp., ISBN 1901903389. IN 1585, three Japanese teenagers served as canopy bearers at the Coronation Mass of Pope Sixtus V. What where these Japanese teenagers doing there? Michael Cooper answers this question in The Japanese Mission to Europe, 1582‐1590: The Journey of Four Samurai Boys through Portugal, Spain and Italy. This work provides a narrative of the first Japanese legation to Europe by Mancio Ito (1569‐1612), Michael Chijawa (1567‐ 1633), Martin Hara (1568‐1639), and Julian Nakaura (1568‐1633). Cooper states that this work is a ‘paraphrase’ of the work La Première Ambassade du Japon en Europe by Luis Fróis (1532‐1597), a Jesuit who based his account upon the notes written by the Japanese boys and their compansions during their trip, and does not provide any new insight for scholars (p. xi). However, this work is important in that it makes the story of these four individuals more accessible; before its publication, the legation had only been mentioned in no more than ten articles in English and was largely unknown or ignored by scholars. The work is divided into seven parts chronicling the reasons for the journey, legs of the trip, and results of the legation sent to Europe. The first part is the nucleus of the work. Cooper first describes how the Jesuits came to Japan and were successful in their missionary efforts. -

That is true in the ideal world of Euclidean geometry. But we do not live in such a world. In the real world parallel lines intersect with a vengeance. In this paper those parallel lines will represent parallel countries and cultures and the focus will be on those points where they intersect and connect. If this paper has any claim to originality, it is not in the discovery of heretofore unknown historieal personages or events, but in their interpretation and integration. Indeed, history has shown that history, as such, does not exist, but rather the different interpretations of past events by individual historians. I hope that this paper will serve as a model of a kind of historical interpretation that strives to connect different countries and cultures. The purpose of this paper is twofold:to provide a capsule account of the most significant events in world and Japanese history leading up to the first landing of Europeans in Japan, and to focus on the interaction of Europeans and Japanese up to the year 1852. -

Tokugawa Ieyasu, Shogun 徳川家康 Tokugawa Ieyasu, Shogun Constructed and resided at Hamamatsu Castle for 17 years in order to build up his military prowess into his adulthood. (At age 6) 1549 (Tenbun 18) Hirotada, his father, was assassinated. Taken to Sunpu as a hostage of Imagawa Yoshimoto. (At age 8) 1557 (Koji 3) Marries Lady Tsukiyama and changes his name to Motoyasu. A story relates that Oichi sent her brother a ”charm” that was, in actuality, a warning that he was about to be attacked from both front and rear by the Asakura and Azai clans. When Odani was surrounded, Nobunaga requested that his sister be returned to him before the final attack. Nagamasa agreed, sending out Oichi and her three daughters. Nagamasa had no hope of winning, and chose to commit seppuku. -

Asian Christian Writers in the 16th–18th Centuries A Selection From Japan John England SIXTEENTH AND SEVENTEENTH CENTURIES The “Christian century” following Xavier’s arrival in 1549 saw the emer- gence of Christian writings in many forms, both by Japanese converts and through their collaboration with Jesuit scholars. 1. Amongst the earliest Christian writers for whom some texts are extant are: a) Paulo Yoho-ken (1510-1596) has been termed the “father of Japanese Christian literature.” Physician, catechist and later member of the Society of Jesus, his writings include plays on Christ’s Passion and on Christmas, and the stories Kurofune Monogatari (Tale of the Black Ship) and Bungo Monogatari (Tale of Bungo) of which only extracts are ex- tant. He was also co-author, and translator, for a Catechism, for “Lives of the Saints”, a grammar, a dictionary and other works. b) Vincente Hoin (b. 1538, son of Yoho-ken was said in the “Cata- logue” of 1593 to have “written and translated the greater part of the spiritual and learned books which have thus far been written in Japanese” (Laures, 1957, 40). See volumes listed below for the years 1586-1599. c) Hosokawa, Tama Gracia (1563-1600), wife of Hosokawa Tadaoki, wrote a series of letters to Gregorio de Cespedes S.J. (Laures, 1959, 98ff.) and also a number of poems (Heuvers 1938, 277; Laures 1956, 113f.) in the years 1587-1600. (Her life is given in Boker 1934-5, Lau- res 1956 and Laures 1959.) d) Fucan Fabian (b. 1565) is noted for both the first Japanese work of apologetic, and (later) for the first anti-Christian book in Japan: Myotai Mondo (Dialogue between Myoshu and Yutei) contains an out- line of Christian doctrine and a refutation of Confucianism, Shinto This is the fourth paper on Asian Christian Writers in 16th-18th Centuries to be published in Inter- religio.
