Theodore Hesburgh I’ve witnessed the good, the bad and ugly in my tenure as an educator of forty plus years. I’ve by Dennis Doughty, dealt with challenges that seemed insurmountable and issues with children that just break your SPH ‘72 heart. I’ve witnessed good and positive things that fortify you both spiritually and emotionally. NCS President In all my years as an educator, the good outweighs the bad by a hundredfold because education is about interaction with children. We are fortunate that at Norwalk Catholic School and St. Paul High School, we have experienced a great deal of the positive. Highly functioning schools have certain characteristics that can be recognized or identified Mission through observation and analysis of their performance. This past year is no exception to those positive observations of our schools. Every student is empowered to achieve their All high school students complete at least 25 hours of service per year. Included in this full potential personally, morally, academically, community service are the following agencies: YES (Youth Elect Service), Vacation Bible physically, and spiritually. Here are a few of the many blessings we have experienced: Donating mission collections that totaled nearly $6,700! Scoring on the Iowa Test for Sophomores and Freshmen that averaged above the 75th percentile in every area! Experiencing a thrilling and entertaining music season that featured marching performances, I can do all band and choir concerts, West Side Story, and the Choir’s Christmas tour! Achieving success in endeavors such as the HS Academic Challenge Team (3rd in Firelands things in Him Conference), Rocket Team, and the JH Academic Challenge Teams (2nd and 3rd places)! Gathering around Christ’s altar 36 times for Mass as a school community including Who gives once with Bishop Thomas! Competing with distinction in the Firelands Conference by sharing or winning outright me strength. conference titles in boys’ golf, volleyball, football, girls’ basketball, baseball and girls’ track! ~ St. Paul to the Philippians 4:13 Earning 18 or more assessment graduation points in the eighth grade by 59% of the class for many courses that they have not taken yet! Working with the entire school on Make a Difference Day in the community and completing nearly 4,500 hours of service! Praying at KAIROS, NET retreats, Our Lady of Consolation Shrine and at two Reconciliation Services! Striving to be the best, with competitors at State Tournaments in golf, cross country, wrestling and track! That is why I choose to teach at our Norwalk Catholic School. We are responsible to make sure our young people know the foundations of our faith and then also to understand that they are held accountable for applying these tenets every minute in their work and in their leisure. We also help our students become the best they can be academically, spiritually and physically. I have chosen to return to the classroom as a Theology teacher to finish my career in education. This is where the true fun for educators happens….with the students! Thank you to all with whom I have served over these past 19 years as principal at SPHS and NCS Elementary School and to by Valerie French, the greater community of Norwalk. It is a blessed place!
