“You have to have a vision. It’s got to be a vision that you articulate clearly and forcefully. You can’t blow an uncertain trumpet. You have to seize the moment and make it yours.” ~ Rev. Theodore Hesburgh

Our Diocese requires every teacher to instruct our students to be informed and engaged participants in civil life as a person who gives witness to our Catholic teachings. That is why I choose to teach at our Norwalk Catholic School. We are responsible to make sure our young people know the foundations of our faith and then also to understand that they are held accountable for applying these tenets every minute in their work and in their leisure. We also help our students become the best they can be academically, spiritually and physically. I have chosen to return to the classroom as a Theology teacher to finish my career in education. This is where the true fun for educators happens….with the students! Thank you to all with whom I have served over these past 19 years as principal at SPHS and NCS Elementary School and to by Valerie French, the greater community of Norwalk. It is a blessed place! Melissa Englert began her teaching career at the Early Childhood Center in the 2008 school year. Melissa received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education (BGSU), her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Teaching (BGSU) and completed a second Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership & Administration (Ashland) this past spring. Melissa completed her practicum in administration under the guidance of Valerie French this past school year. Melissa resides in Norwalk with her husband of 18 years, Kevin Englert, who is a 1995 graduate of St. Paul High School. She also has four children who attend Norwalk Catholic School and St. Paul High School. Melissa has a strong passion for education, as well as a strong faith in God and family. Melissa feels honored to be selected as the next elementary principal and is committed to the mission and tradition of developing Disciples of Christ, promoting academic excellence and fostering a respectful community. I am a product of St. Paul High School and St. Mary School, the very building that I serve in today. When I watch the preschoolers practice their Christmas program, I remember the teachers and students of the 5th - 8th grades rehearsing to bring the Christmas pageants of the 80s to the community. When I watch our staff challenge and encourage our students to try things that they do not believe they can do, I can hear the Sisters of Notre Dame ask and expect us to push ourselves to be the person that God created. I see Father Reynolds and the outstanding pastors who have guarded and advanced our school’s mission before and since in the very bricks and mortar of our school. Generations of our parish and school communities have strengthened our parishes and community by strengthening this school. We are all working to build the City of God by helping to develop the children of God. The “secret sauce” for our school continues to be the commitment and service of our staff, students, parishes, families, by Angie Smith, SPH ‘92 alumni and benefactors; it is powerful and transformative. Thank you for being part of this BIG ECC Director tradition.  BIG in numbers - a total of 177 preschool and kindergarten students were educated and loved at the ECC. The preschool program was full at 118. The kindergarten added a third class to best serve its 59 students.  BIG in growth - from August to May, our students grew so much in size, in knowledge, in abilities, in confidence, in independence, and in faith.  BIG in learning - ECC staff increased attention to assessment, curriculum, classroom interventions and service referrals to identify and meet the individual needs of students who require more than the core course of study.  BIG in vision - we blend the most effective educational practices of today with the pillars of a classic education to prepare the classes of 2029, 2030 and 2031 to live, work and lead in an increasingly complex world. Today’s students will hold jobs that do not exist yet. That world will require informed, creative, flexible, hard-working and ethical citizens and employees. Unbelievably, in 2016/2017 that tall order begins with 3, 4 and 5 year-olds in preschool with carefully and skillfully designed play-based lessons in a nurturing learning environment.  BIG in tradition - despite our focus on the future of our students, the deep roots of the ECC and St. Mary and St. Paul school challenge us to continue the tradition of excellence, inquiry and service passed down to us over the past 100 years of Catholic education in Norwalk and the Firelands. Welcome to Lindsay Schaffer, Our Annual Fund and Communication Coordinator I grew up in Norwalk and am a 1993 graduate of Edison High School. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from the Ohio University College of Business. My husband Alex (SPH ’93) and I moved back to Norwalk with our two girls Elyssa (currently in 9th grade) and Stephanie (currently in 4thgrade) in 2012 from the Columbus area. We made this decision specifically to get back to our roots, be close to family, and for our girls to attend Norwalk Catholic School. I love spending time outdoors with my family and friends around a campfire. My favorite place to visit is a cabin in the Hocking Hills, and hiking at Old Man's Cave. Someday, I hope to take our camper and travel out west.

Welcome Mr. Fair Back to the Classroom Matt Fair moves back to where his heart is, teaching History and Everyday Law. He will continue to help our office with Alumni events and the media. You are WHY We Succeed!! We thank you for your faithful support that makes our mission possible! Our Donors’ List represents the generosity and faithful commitment of so many good people. We appreciate your generous gifts of time, talent and treasure to keep our school strong and vibrant. May God bless you! And thank you! You again have helped us reach a new milestone for our Friends for the Future Annual Fund:

Thank you for another year of successful special events. While certainly the money raised at these events supports our cause and is much needed, the real progress is made by the volunteers and staff who help at these events. These volunteers and staff forward our mission as a school. They are an example to our students and alumni of the hard work and dedication that is St. Paul High School and Norwalk Catholic School. These events are fun because our volunteers and staff come with a positive attitude and that affects everyone who attends. Please join us at any of our events this year and see what we are about. Thank you to everyone who participates and helps with our events!

Thank you Norwalk community for supporting the inaugural running of the Mapletree Road Race. The Michael H. Hay Endowment benefitted by just over $16,000. A complete story will follow in the December edition.

Norwalk Catholic School has benefitted greatly from its two endowment funds over the years. The FCEDO Endowment Fund and Norwalk Parochial Trust Endowment have contributed over $4.1 million dollars to the school’s operating budget over the last 35 years. The endowment funds are a real blessing as this invested pool of money provides a reliable source of income to the school. Earnings from the endowment fund enhance the budget, enable improvements and upgrades and provide scholarships. Twenty-seven Scholarships totaling $11,450 were awarded students for the 2017-2018 school year through our endowment efforts. Without endowment by Sue Riley, funds a Catholic education would not be possible for many families. Endowment funds also FCEDO Endowment Director allow us to consider needed improvements such as high quality professional development, more competitive teacher salaries, and enhancing our STEM curriculum. The endowment is the bedrock of our success. On behalf of the FCEDO Endowment Board, I am pleased to share the Endowment Fund FCEDO Board Members: Activity for the 2016/2017 fiscal year. This fund is now valued at $4,803,848.60 (market value), and has contributed $278,000 to the school’s operations this fiscal year. Pamela Bellamy Contributing to our school Endowment Fund is a perfect way to continue your lifelong support Chris Brown, M.D. of Catholic education long past your lifetime. My board members and I would love to discuss a Legacy Gift, Named Endowed Scholarship or Charter Membership to Endowment to profess Dennis Doughty your support of our school. A gift to our school endowment funds is a long-lasting blessing Aaron Fries to Norwalk Catholic School/St. Paul High. I sincerely thank all those who have contributed to our Norwalk Catholic School Endowment Tip Hosack Fund and encourage all those who love and support our school to consider a gift to endowment Tim Mayles, CPA, CFE, CFF – the gift that keeps on giving. Julie Roberts, D.D.S. God Bless and Thank you. Patrick Schwan, P.E.
