She has appeared as a soloist with the Indianapolis and Shreveport Symphonies, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, and the Music Academy of the West and Juilliard Orchestras. Ms. Choi has been presented in recitals in cities in the U.S. and abroad, including Paris, New York City, Philadelphia, and Chicago. She has been presented in prestigious venues such as Avery Fisher Hall, Chicago Cultural Center, Steinway Hall, and the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival. She has been heard as a soloist and chamber musician in live and recorded performances on radio stations around the country including WQXR New York Radio, WFMT Chicago Radio, WQSC Santa Barbara, KDAQ Shreveport, and WICR Indianapolis. Ms. Choi was a featured artist at the Vancouver Recital Society’s Chamber Music Festival, in which her performances were broadcast on the CBC Canada Radio.

  • Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra Has Commissioned a New
    Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra has commissioned a new orchestral work, Earworms, from internationally renowned, JUNO Award-winning composer Vivian Fung. Earworms receives its world premiere performances by the National Arts Centre Orchestra under the baton of Music Director Alexander Shelley on Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23, 2018 at 8:00PM at National Arts Centre’s Southam Hall. The program also features Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Russian-born Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg. On Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 8:00PM, the program travels to Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall, presented by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Of her new piece, Vivian Fung explains, “Earworms" is a feisty and whimsical orchestral piece that provides a commentary on the world we live in today – it musically depicts our diverted attention spans, our constant barrage of music and other media, and our multi-tasking lives. Since having my son almost three years ago, I have found my life to be more complicated and chaotic, but also all the richer and more meaningful. I find myself at the end of the day humming tunes that have gotten into my head and that I cannot seem to escape no matter how hard I try – hence the title Earworms.” Earworms features snippets of some of the best, most insistent, and most annoying of these tunes and combines them into a playful and quirky arrangement. These include phrases of Ravel’s La Valse and Fung’s son’s favorite, “Wheels on the Bus,” to which he has listened every day ad nauseam for the past six months.

Solomon, Jr. Toronto Vivian Fung (née 1975) 1 One of the most exciting young Canadian composers—composing mainly in the 21st century and active now—is Edmonton native Vivian Fung. Her first violin concerto (one of two so far) won a Juno award in 2013 for best classical composition of the year and helped to catapult her career. Typical of her music, this piece draws on the influence of non-Western folk music and Brazilian rhythms, but is also wholly original and captivating in its musical ideas. It combines unusual textures (including splendid use of harmonics) with a vital pulse produced by rhythms alternately syncopated and compound. The violin concerto and two of her other early pieces (a piano concerto called “Dreamscapes”, and the popular “Glimpses” for prepared piano) were recorded and widely distributed on a Naxos CD. Ms. Fung first studied composition with Canadian composer Violet Archer (herself a former student of Bartok and Hindemith), but then moved on to Juilliard School in New York, where she did both undergraduate and graduate studies and later became a faculty member. Her composition teachers at Juilliard included American composers David Diamond and Robert Beaser. But she has maintained strong Canadian connections, including with some recent compositions.

Messer-Kruse Graduate Faculty Representative Marilyn Shrude Kenneth Thompson © 2016 Octavio Más-Arocas All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Emily Freeman Brown, Advisor Despite great efforts by American composers, their prodigious musical output has been mostly ignored by American orchestras. Works by living American composers account for an annual average of only 6% of all the music performed by American orchestras, while works by living composers of all nationalities combined totals a meager 11%. This study examines some of the historical breaking points in the relationship between American orchestras and new music. Five exceptional orchestras are cited, the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, and the Seattle Symphony, that are thriving while successfully incorporating new music in their programing. This document draws attention to the significant role new music can play in the future of American orchestras by analyzing the programing of new music and projects that support composers, identifying innovative orchestral leaders and composers who have successfully served in advisory positions, and by recognizing and discussing the many creative strategies orchestras are using today. This document attempts to increase the understanding of the need for change in concert programing while highlighting several thrilling examples of innovative strategies that are making an essential contribution to the future of orchestral music.

The result is a wonderfully textured musical celebration of the Vancouver Biennale by one of Canada’s “must hear” Contemporary composers.
